Silent Hill 2 Remake and Dead Space Remake are two games that suffered from traversal stutters on all platforms. However, it appears that modders are trying to reduce those stutters so that PC gamers can get a smoother experience. And no, these aren’t placebo mods. These are real mods that reduce the traversal stutters in these two games.
Let’s start with the mod for Dead Space Remake. Created by modder lukeman3000, Ishimura Patch aims to reduce its traversal stutters. The mod takes a new approach by changing how the game’s Frostbite engine uses GPU memory. Unlike older fixes, it does not rely on slower storage or limits on asset loading.
According to its creator, the game makes hundreds of small requests for GPU memory in a single frame. These requests can slow the game down. Ishimura Patch aims to fix this by setting aside larger blocks of GPU memory. It then splits them into smaller parts as needed. This cuts down on the number of costly requests.
The mod also improves how the GPU copies data and how the game loads textures. These changes can help the game load assets with fewer delays. As a result, they may reduce stutter as players move through the world.
Lukeman3000 has provided some benchmarks and comparisons on the official website for the Ishimura Patch. You can also download the mod from here.
Switching to the mod for Silent Hill 2 Remake now. Created by modder bigbullet3, it is based on the Ishimura Patch but uses a different method. Its goal is to reduce stutter when players move through the game world.
The mod changes a setting that controls how much ray-tracing work the game can handle in one frame. It sets a soft limit of 50,000 primitives per frame. This spreads some of the work across more frames, which may help reduce stutter. Furthermore, the mod does not change the VRAM pool or use Frostbite engine patches (which would make no sense as Silent Hill 2 Remake uses Unreal Engine 5).
You can go ahead and download the mod for Silent Hill 2 Remake from this link.
So there you have it. Two mods that aim to reduce/fix the traversal stutters of these two recent PC games. Ironically, these mods were only possible thanks to the advancements in AI. So, if you hate anything related to AI, you can keep your stuttery games. Personally, I will enjoy these “AI-slop” mods!

Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
