BioShock fans, here is something special for you today. Modders ‘skurtyyskirts’ and ‘watbulb’ have released a demo for the RTX Remix Mod for the first classic BioShock game. This mod will add real-time Path Tracing to this classic FPS. As such, it’s a must for all of its fans who who’d love to see a remake of it.
The first version of the BioShock RTX Remix Mod is called an experimental restoration. It uses RTX Remix to upgrade the game’s graphics with better-looking materials (PBR assets). It also includes a custom-made tool that helps RTX Remix work properly with the game.
BioShock uses Unreal Engine 2.5 and relies heavily on shaders for its graphics. Because of this, getting it to work with RTX Remix isn’t easy. Modders had to create a special compatibility wrapper. This tool sits between BioShock and RTX Remix and helps the two work together by changing or skipping things that RTX Remix can’t normally handle.
As the modders noted, the demo has hundreds of new textures and assets. These have been recreated by hand with physically-based properties, from the grand halls of the Kashmir Restaurant to the smallest pieces of debris on the ocean floor. Right now, you can find these new assets up to the Floodlight Theatre area.
Most of the lighting in the demo has been updated. Some lights now glow using special effects, while others use lights placed in the world. Dynamic lights are brought back as best as possible using the compatibility mod, even if the game engine works differently.
You can go ahead and download the demo from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find some screenshots and a trailer. As I said, this is a demo. So, expect some visual bugs and issues.
These past couple of weeks, we’ve shared a lot of RTX Remix Mods. So, you can find mods for Black Mesa, Star Wars Republic Commando, NFS: Underground, and Manhunt. You can also find some for Morrowind, NFS: Underground 2, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
In January 2024, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Then, in February 2024, we shared videos for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Unreal, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, and Midnight Club 2. Be sure to also check out some early RTX Remix videos and screenshots for Fallout: New Vegas, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, COD 2, and Half-Life.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for Painkiller and Left 4 Dead 2. Oh, and don’t forget to try this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. In September 2024, we also shared a new version of the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne. Lastly, you can download these amazing Path Tracing Mods for Doom, Doom 2, Quake, and Serious Sam.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

Amazing video, almost two minutes of black screen, 720p quality, and jitter mouse movement from too high mouse DPI/Sens.
rtx remix failed
With all the water, neon lights, and metallic surfaces it's an ideal candidate for RT but this one looks like trash just like every other RTX remix project.
What on earth ? Looks horrendous overall ! Thanks for the 2 minutes of free Black screen though.
….
It's not ready to be shown, or demoed, or anything really. Yeah, they got some reflections working, woo. Nah.
And honestly, I don't know how this slop is listed in the RTX $50,000 contest. That contest is full of crap.
Pleased to hear people are working on it.
It would be ok if you can find the game thay dont even sell the original on gog anymore only the remasters.
Sorry but that just looks bad.
Why does the wood and carpet look like one sheet of glass…
Most of these game Remixes look bad.
How is this kid going to overhaul the entire game if he cant even make a video without half of it being a black screen?
