Modder ‘Caseyclysm’ has released a new mod for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that makes its Ray Tracing effects better. This mod is actually a heavily edited “Engine.ini” file. So, to be more precise, it will turn on some RT features that you can’t normally activate through the game’s settings.
Going into more details, this mod turns on Hardware Lumen for lighting, reflections, and shadows. It also adds support for NVIDIA Ray Reconstruction. On top of that, it helps fix global lighting leaks, making shadows and light look more natural. Plus, it makes hair, clothes, and fog look better than before.
You can download the mod from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find some comparison screenshots. The vanilla screenshots are on the left and the modded screenshots are on the right. These will give you an idea of what you can expect from it.
Since the mod enables Hardware Lumen, the game’s lighting should be more stable in motion. It should also have fewer visual artifacts. Not only that, but Ray Reconstruction will reduce some ghosting issues that some could spot in various places.
At the same time, Hardware Lumen will increase the GPU requirements. Thus, I only suggest using this mod if you own a high-end GPU. Ideally, you should use it with the DLSS 4 Frame Gen Mod. By using both DLSS 4 Quality Mode and Frame Gen, you will be able to achieve high framerates.
I know it sucks that the DLSS 4 Frame Gen Mod is behind a Patreon wall, but that’s the only DLSS 4 FG Mod so far. You can enable AMD FSR 3.0 with Frame Gen via Optiscaler. However, some users have reported crashes and additional stutters with it.
As I wrote in my PC Performance Analysis, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is really demanding on Epic Settings. The NVIDIA RTX 5090 can barely run it with 60FPS at Native 4K/Epic Settings. Things get way better with DLSS 4 Quality Mode. However, you might encounter some issues with this mod. I haven’t tested it yet so I can’t comment on its performance hit.
Speaking of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, I also suggest downloading the ClairObscurFix Mod. This mod will remove the 30FPS cap from the in-game cut-scenes. Moreover, it will remove the sharpening filter that the devs have used. It will also skip intro logos, and it will reduce letterboxing/pillarboxing in cutscenes.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
UPDATE:
According to various reports, the mod does not enable Hardware Lumen. However, it will improve the game’s Ray Tracing effects (and it will increase the BVH for RT). Thus, I’ve edited the title of the article to reflect this.
