Take-Two shuts down Red Dead Redemption mod for Grand Theft Auto V

White Team shared yesterday the first trailer for its Red Dead Redemption mod for Grand Theft Auto V. This mod was aiming to port the whole Red Dead Redemption map – from the X360 version of the game – to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V. However, Take-Two got in touch with this modding team and shut it down.

As White Team’s Mr. Leisurewear stated:

“I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted , and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project.”

As Leisurewear claimed, this project was never meant to be a proper total conversion (with single-player story elements) mod for GTA V. It was just a map for GTA V, with various scripted content, and nothing more. As such, we are a bit puzzled as to why Take-Two decided to shut it down, especially since there are similar mods/maps for GTA V out there.

“We were only gonna get a way to convert the map with both legal copies of each game , and some custom scripted additional content , there was never any intention or mention to either port a storymode over from RDR to V.”

  1. It took too long for Take-Two to take it down. I never hoped it would last more though. It’s sad. But hey, we’re getting RDR2 maybe in the future.

  2. They probably got a C&D.

Learned that from a fellow DSOG user today :).

    I FEEL SMART NOW.

P.s : edit was for typo. Guess i am not smart enough.

    1. Not really. Take-Two’s legal team will send a C&D to anything they consider potential copyright infringement. Doesn’t matter if they have any intention to release RDR on PC or not.

      1. agreed, they won’t release it on PC, they don’t like money, people like you and me are very smart to quickly realize business companies don’t like money.

    2. At this point the only way it’s coming to PC is through a new-gen console remaster. Anything short of that would be a miracle, money or no money. It’s just been far too many years for it to happen any other way.

    there, stop spamming it now

  4. I don’t know… .why are you hyped! Considering it’s rockstar I can’t see it being the absolute brilliance people make it out to be. And since console plebs only play a game once before worshiping it on the internet you might want to keep your expectations in check.

    1. Played it on ps3 in 2012(i waited patiently for it to hit pc)
Its a brilliant game and i enjoyed it much more than gta4 and it deserves a pc port not just for modding.
In my opinion its the last rockstar game that was truly single player, take gta5 it have great single player but its a pretty short story mode and people have been begging for single player dlc but instead rockstar are focused on the multi player portion of this game.

    2. Is it overhyped? Absolutely. Is it a good game, regardless? Yes. Should it come to PC one day, through a nice HD remaster? Hell yes.

Will the second be sh*t by comparison? F*ck yeah.

P.S. The sequel is definitely coming to PC, btw, for all you sceptics out there. It’s just a question of when.

  5. “They can’t shut down emulation”

True. It’s just a matter of time when xbox 360 emulator will appear as a new feature of Windows 10 “Xbox Play Anywhere” program. GameSpot said that “Red Dead Redemption has seen a 6000%-plus increase in the sales rankings on Amazon” after MS add this game to Xbox 360 emulator on Xbox One, Now its time to add Xbox 360 emulator to PC

      1. Xenia is slow and don’t work for AAA games. It can’t run simple Frogger from Xbox Arcade in 720p 30fps on Intel Core i7 Haswell CPU.

Original Xbox 360 emulator created by MS is much faster. It runs more than 300 games on weak AMD APU 1.6 Ghz with GPU 1.3 TFLOPS. Its 10 times better optimized than Xenia

    1. KEK until there is solid prove that this is the case I call it bs. And even if it is console game still won’t just support mouse and keyboard like that, that’s not how these thigns wrong.

  6. How about them just porting the game on PC or at least the 2nd game. I mean why take the trouble of having to single out a mod team. Kinda a b i t c h move I think. I mean the game already made them Millions

    1. From what I understand of it, it would be a coder’s nightmare to bring it to the PC. Port-wise, that is.

        1. Yeah, but it was made on a PC using Console SDKs, because it was designed specifically for consoles, rather than for consoles + PCs.

It basically all comes down to how you code the engine you want to use on your project, & how platform-friendly you want to make it. PC-oriented engines have the same problems when it comes to moving over to consoles, though it’s become easier with this new generation not having custom hardware to f*ck around with (i.e. PS3).

They seemingly used a modified version of Rockstar’s RAGE Engine on RDR, so if they made in-depth console-specific modifications that they never bothered to properly “tune” for a potential PC port later down the line, then they’re basically still f*cked even now, because they’d have to go in & do all of that work in order to make a PC port, regardless.

          1. Yet I can run Bayonetta a game that was made for WII U at 4K 60 fps on a 970 gtx and still have 10% left over utilization.

          2. Different engines, different developers, different studios, with completely different development ideologies, mindsets, & approaches, no doubt.

Hell, completely different type of game, even. Red Dead Redemption is an open-world GTA-type game, whereas Bayonetta is like a DMC variant. The environments, the gameplay systems, everything is completely different.

P.S. You’re thinking of Bayonetta 2, that one was the Wii U exclusive. Bayonetta OG was made for the X360, & then shoddily ported over to the PS3 (to this day, it retains terrible, persisting framerates issues). Eventually it got a Wii U release in 2014 alongside Bayonetta 2, yeah, but that was just a port job; its native platform is & has always been the X360.

          3. Yet guess what… It was done. And nobody expected it to be done. So why all the excuses? The developers under rockstar can have no problem making a remaster of RDR on PC. I mean why not they do that BS now with new consoles today.

And yet Plat out of nowhere makes one of the best ports seen in a very long time.

          4. Well, like Platinum said, platform choice is basically up to the publisher, & considering how Rockstar isn’t an independent company, I daresay the same applies in their case, so Take-Two also gets a voice in this.

As for why they haven’t done a new-gen console port &/or remaster, f*ck knows. I’ve been saying for years now that the weirdest titles get chosen for a remastering, whereas actual solid classics get passed over for reasons that to this day I still can’t understand in the least.

Maybe it really is just a question of desire, effort, &/or interest on a case-by-case basis, f*ck knows.

Yeah, but Platinum’s been working towards this, to be fair. As in, it’s not their first PC release, & I’m pretty sure that they took the time to do this one right, regardless, because getting it to work this well, even though it is a 7.5-year old game, does take considerable effort.

Most others wouldn’t have put in so much effort regardless, they’d have just done something akin to Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, called it quits & thrown it out for us, just like that.

          5. http://i.imgur.com/tpRrJdA.jpg To do such a good job like this does take effort. And all Rockstar game developers know how to Dev on PC. It’s just another case of Publisher pay roll taking effect.

And they know for a fact that RDR would sell well on PC. They just don’t want to take the time to make it on PC. Besides for them it’s a old title. And they could not get away with a $59.99 price.

          6. To do such a good job like this does take effort. And all Rockstar game developers know how to Dev on PC. It’s just another case of Publisher pay roll taking effect. My comment needs a approved. But to have 10% Utilization left at 4K capped at 60 FPS is a very good job and CPU usage is only at 16% on a 4770K kept at stock clocks.

And they know for a fact that RDR would sell well on PC. They just don’t want to take the time to make it on PC. Besides for them it’s a old title. And they could not get away with a $59.99 price.

          7. Yeah, I think that’s the case too, but at the same time, that argument’s never made very much sense to me. Hell, not just in RDR’s case, but in general; there’s a few titles like RDR that haven’t been ported to PC yet, even though they should have already been years ago, from a financial point of view.

After all, every time a game like Dragon’s Dogma, Dark Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Bayonetta, etc. etc. etc. reach the PC, they prove that there’s a standing market for older titles being subsequently released on the PC, since good games will always sell, but RDR still ardently refuses to make the switch, even though I have no doubt RDR PC could clear a million sales within the first few days (tops), so, why

Sure, they’d have to price it at anything between $20-$30, but so what, they’d still get a nice fat paycheck out of it all, in the end. Especially if they pushed a little further & released it on the new-gen consoles, at the same time.

I mean, when the Japanese developers are giving in & conceding to how much money the PC makes, while the Westerners are still holding out….. yeah, there is something seriously wrong with that picture.

But yeah, Bayonetta’s been ridiculously well optimised. This level of effort truly gives me great hopes for the eventual Vanquish port 😀

          8. oh and guess what I am not thinking of bayonetta 2… I am talking about 1 that was released on steam last week. And it’s amazing. Best Utilization I seen in a port in a very very long time.

        2. It was made on the earliest version of rage engine, if you think gta iv was a nightmare on pc, this is worse.

          1. Except the fact that they’d need to invest time & money both, into such a project, which it seems they’re either unwilling, or simply unable to do, for whatever reason.

Hell, if it was just something a couple of guys could do on their off time, I’d say it would have already been done by now, so the only thing stopping a release is the publisher at this point, but this is a lot bigger than that.

A project of this magnitude needs a porting team, which means either outsourcing the work, or handling it internally by diverting a certain amount of people to work on it for a certain amount of time.

  7. I’ve played this game and every other other games R* games have made on different platforms from PS1 to X360 to iPhone to PC but god I f*cking hate this company so much

    1. RDR2 definitely, as it’s just another GTAV case. RDR OG…… At this point, only if they do a new-gen console remaster.

  8. what a surprise stealing assets damaging intellectual property this is what you get stop stealing and whining about drm they have rights to protect their property this is why rdr never came to pc due to high piracy that hurt the industry i would rather have a pc version of this game with always online uncrackable drm than nothing

    1. What the f*ck.

Are you, like, for real, or have you just never heard of the Fair Use clause?

Go educate yourself a little, seriously.

      1. What do you expect from a profile named ”Kim Kardashian West” ?
This person is posting retarded fanboy comments on every post on this site.

      2. I blocked him please inform him stalker devs allowed modders to use their asssets and thus they are ported in fallout.

      3. fail use doesn’t includes extracting decompiling reverse engineering this is not fair use

        1. “What Is Fair Use?

In its most general sense, a fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and “transformative” purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work. Such uses can be done without permission from the copyright owner. In other words, fair use is a defense against a claim of copyright infringement. If your use qualifies as a fair use, then it would not be considered an infringement.

So what is a “transformative” use? If this definition seems ambiguous or vague, be aware that millions of dollars in legal fees have been spent attempting to define what qualifies as a fair use. There are no hard-and-fast rules, only general guidelines and varied court decisions, because the judges and lawmakers who created the fair use exception did not want to limit its definition. Like free speech, they wanted it to have an expansive meaning that could be open to interpretation.”

          “United States[edit]
In the United States even if an artifact or process is protected by trade secrets, reverse-engineering the artifact or process is often lawful as long as it has been legitimately obtained.[29]

Reverse engineering of computer software in the US often falls under both contract law as a breach of contract as well as any other relevant laws. This is because most EULAs (end user license agreement) specifically prohibit it, and U.S. courts have ruled that if such terms are present, they override the copyright law which expressly permits it (see Bowers v. Baystate Technologies[30][31]).

Sec. 103(f) of the DMCA (17 U.S.C. § 1201 (f)) says that a person who is in legal possession of a program, is permitted to reverse-engineer and circumvent its protection if this is necessary in order to achieve “interoperability” – a term broadly covering other devices and programs being able to interact with it, make use of it, and to use and transfer data to and from it, in useful ways. A limited exemption exists that allows the knowledge thus gained to be shared and used for interoperability purposes. The section states:”

          “European Union[edit]
EU Directive 2009/24, on the legal protection of computer programs, governs reverse engineering in the European Union. The directive states:[32]

          (15) The unauthorised reproduction, translation, adaptation or transformation of the form of the code in which a copy of a computer program has been made available constitutes an infringement of the exclusive rights of the author. Nevertheless, circumstances may exist when such a reproduction of the code and translation of its form are indispensable to obtain the necessary information to achieve the interoperability of an independently created program with other programs. It has therefore to be considered that, in these limited circumstances only, performance of the acts of reproduction and translation by or on behalf of a person having a right to use a copy of the program is legitimate and compatible with fair practice and must therefore be deemed not to require the authorisation of the rightholder. An objective of this exception is to make it possible to connect all components of a computer system, including those of different manufacturers, so that they can work together. Such an exception to the author’s exclusive rights may not be used in a way which prejudices the legitimate interests of the rightholder or which conflicts with a normal exploitation of the program.”

No, please, tell me more about how “reverse engineering” in order to create a non-profit total conversion mod in an IP that is owned by the same company that owns the original IP is suddenly illegal, apparently?

    2. durka durka says;
“I blocked him please inform him stalker devs allowed modders to use their asssets and thus they are ported in fallout.”

    1. LOL!

Yeah, emulating consoles that are no longer being manufactured, & thus no longer being sold by first parties = bad for business, right?

Sure, there are still many X360 & PS3 titles being sold, so what? The moment Microsoft & Sony stop manufacturing the older console in question, the industry as a whole stops giving a sh*t, so I don’t see why you think you should.

      1. of course it does cause no one buys games to emulate they just download it illegally online that’s the fact i’m not talking about hardware

        1. And I repeat, for the hard-of-understanding; “Sure, there are still many X360 & PS3 titles being sold, so what?”

Nobody sells PlayStation 2 titles anymore. Nobody sells Xbox OG titles anymore, & only certain, specific PS3 & X360 titles are still being sold by their respective publishers, so tell me more about how “emulation hurts the industry”, why don’t you?

  9. “we are a bit puzzled as to why Take-Two decided to shut it down”
Cause Red Dead Redemption Remaster is coming to steam in the near future.

    1. Meh. If they’d announced an RDR Remaster instead of RDR2, I’d have said it’s definitely coming to PC, but they went straight to RDR2, which I’m thinking means they don’t want to bother with the original, at all, not to port it to new-gen consoles, not to port it to PC, nothing.

      1. Here is what i think: RDR2 probably going to be an exclusive game to XONE and PS4, and for sure later on PC. And in the same time they can make RDR remaster exclusive for PC, and later on XONE and PS4. PC gamers who like this game can only Hope. otherwise f@uck everything 🙂

        1. An RDR remaster, no matter who gets it first, as long as it does reach PC, would be great, yeah. Especially since I’m expecting the sequel to be a disappointment by comparison.

        2. > exclusive game to XONE and PS4, and for sure later on PC.

          lol

Rockstar is just triple-dipping. It’s what they do.

  10. I just don’t see the reason why people so desperately want RDR on PC. I got it on PS3, and it was one of the most boring experiences I’ve ever had.

    1. Same. The story might pick up at some point or even have a good ending but most of it was borring busy work. Gun and call of juarez was better.

  11. Besides, it’s the Internet. A US ruling would mean nothing in the greater scheme of things, regardless, as in order to block the entire emulation industry world-wide, the Video Game Industry would have to get onto a global-scale campaign akin to Hollywood’s anti-piracy initiative, which they have neither the funds, nor the interest in doing.

  12. Well, sh*t. It puzzles me even more as to why people purchase Rockstar games on PC day one or even at full price, considering how badly they treat their customers.

  13. So porting gta 3 map to vice city is ok. Porting vice city stories to san andreas is ok. porting gta iv to gta v is ok but this isnt?

    Wtf rockstar?

    1. Rockstar intends RDR to be a console exclusive so they don’t want PC gamers to have it. iirc when Rockstar was asked why RDR wouldn’t be coming to PC they replied that it wasn’t a sure thing that it would sell well on PC. I think it would have sold very well on PC. That’s their loss though. They left a huge amount of money on the table and just walked away from it to make console gamers happy that they have a game that we don’t.

      1. Sounds like a quote from the “PC GAMING EZ D33D” era, wherein developers & publishers were vomiting out every excuse in the book in order to “justify” to us why we weren’t getting X, Y, or Z.
