Windows 10 64bit Is the Most Popular OS According to Steam Survey, NVIDIA & Intel Still Dominant

Each and every month, Steam conducts a survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software its customers are using. And according to the March survey, the most popular OS is Microsoft’s Windows 10 64bit. In addition, NVIDIA and Intel are still dominant as most PC gamers are still using Intel’s CPUs and NVIDIA’s GPUs.

2

As we can see, 56.35% of Steam users are using an NVIDIA GPU, while 25.5% are using an AMD/ATI GPU. Moreover 17.77% of Steam users are using an Intel integrated GPU. What’s really interesting here is that despite the debate about whether NVIDIA’s GPUs are optimized for DX12, the green team was able to increase its fan-base. Back in November 2015, 54% of Steam users were using an NVIDIA GPU, while 26% were using an AMD/ATI GPU.

Intel has been going strong with its CPUs and as we can see, almost 76.67% of the survey-takers prefer its CPUs, while 23.33% prefer AMD’s CPUs.

Last but not least, 47.6% of Steam’s survey-takers own a dual-core CPU, while 45.58% own a quad-core CPU. Only 4.63% has a CPU with more than four CPU cores, and 2.19% is still on a single-core CPU.

  1. 60% of steam users are playing at sub 1080p, 125 million steam users=75 million steam users playing at sub 1080p with only 50 million users playing at 1080p, 4k accounts for 0.08% WOW where is all that talk about 4k pc gaming, 4k going mainstream? yeah right, first 1080p has to go mainstream LOL

    1. A low percentage doesn’t mean it’s not mainstream, 4K is affordable in terms of monitor price, just not affordable to most when playing most games in terms of hardware needed to power 4K. Mainstream means available to everyone.

      1. in Europe NO ONE has a 4k monitor/tv and won’t have one for A LONG TIME, i think that you need to re define affordable/available to “everyone”, i can get a 1080p tv for $100 or lower, can i get a 4k tv for that? no? ok then it’s not mainstream lol some countries in Europe have minimal wage $200 a month a you talk about 4k being affordable i lol’d at this so hard

        1. You’re an idiot. Affordable for people who make an average wage. Of course if you work at McDonald’s you can’t afford it. I work as a waiter making 2 grand a month and I can afford it. My wage isn’t anything compared to a career.

        2. I got a 4k TV lol. 2 Actually. 😛 They just cost 700$, its not too much if you have some savings like i did. I also don’t make a ton of money lol.

        3. You can get a 4K, IPS monitor for £203 so I’m not sure what you are smoking because most people can afford that, just not the hardware to power it in AAA games and you are talking £300 for a 4K 28″ monitor.

Stop making stupid sweeping statements about 4K in Europe.

“The latest sale predictions for UHD 4K TVs puts the UK out in front, when it comes to adopting the latest screen tech. According to Nick Simon, market analyst from industry number crunchers GfK, a total of 509,000 UHD TVs were sold in the UK during the 12 months ending August. This compares to 481,000 in Germany and 426,000 in France. Current estimations for future sales are bullish, with the UK UHD market topping three million sets annually by 2017. In a total market of 6 million sets, that’s quite a ratio”

        4. And that is why you are a console peasant. You cant afford proper gaming. My monitor is 4k, lovely glossy panel. My tv is 4k. And you are gonna be stuck at 900p for the next 10 years. Cry my dear peasent boy, cry

          1. stay mad f**got lol go make more petitions for bloodborne on pc like that will change anything lmao

    2. I can play at 4k, but i just don’t like it lol. I got the TV, i got the computer that runs all the games that i play at 4k 40/50 fps. I just hate how tiny the text is, how tiny the UI is, how slow the mouse gets.. (even with a good expensive mouse btw).

Yea, i game at 1080p cuz everything is made for it. From programs to.. well movies and games. 4K gaming is here, but its a bit unpolished. My Windows 7 hates 4k too!

        1. Oh i know, and ive done a ton of things. It still looks ugly and bad. Thats aside from the need of a high DPI mouse, which i don’t feel like buying. I hear WIndows 10 is much better at scaling, but oh well.. that’s another thing i won’t get anytime soon.

          1. ‘looks ugly and bad’ What are you on?

4K looks stunning on the right screen and setup you obviously haven’t a clue what you are talking about.

          2. Mine is a mid range Samsung screen. But it has support for chroma 4:4:4 60hz so i can set it like my 4k monitor on rgb full range. Cant go back. And never will. Guarantee. Really really amazing.

          3. Is the game ress at 4k? Yep.
Does my card work at 4k? Yep.
Is HDMI giving me 60 hz at 4k ? Yep.
Is Windows scaled the correct way so i can see shit? Yep.
Is my TV a 4k TV? Yep.
Is my Samsung monitor 4k? Yep.
Are they set up to output 4 k? Yep.

What more is there to do lol. Anyways, i just don’t like it in the current state. The low fpx, the slow mouse and input lag i keep getting, the horrible scaring of apps/programs/games/Having a 4k TV and a 1080p monitor sucks and small text in games.. Maybe that will get better in the future when people support 4K alot more, when GPU’s get cheaper and faster, but for now? Meh. Besides, im dead serious. I can barely see a big difference when i game from far away (not too far btw)

Perhaps 8k will look insane from a far, but 4k just looks like 1080 from a few feet away.

    3. stay mad pc peasant pirate race lol go pirate some more, is batman working on pc? lmao keep waiting for that patch

      1. Ha you are hilarious, he completely destroys your bait without even typing a single line of text to which you reply “stay mad pc peasant pirate race lol go pirate some more, is batman working on pc? lmao keep waiting for that patch” Stay mad, he never got mad LOL

Also I don’t know what you are worried about peasant, you won’t be playing games at 4k resolution on console even when PS5 and XB2 launch 5 years from now. After all 1080p resolution was a 15 year old standard of PC gaming yet PS4 and XB1 still can’t even guarantee 1080p gaming.

Also yes Batman is working on PC, I am actually down sampling it from 4k resolution down to the native 2560x1440p res that my monitor supports at 60fps with better graphics, textures, draw distance and all the NVIDIA PC specific PhysX effects. However was the 15fps Fallout4 on console patched yet?.

Oh and calling yourself Optimus Prime would have been excruciatingly no life geek pathetic as it is but you decided to name yourself after emo faggit kiddy prime

      2. Batman AK runs better on my PC then it does on PS4 or X1… Even with the shoddy port. What’s your point?

    4. 35% of people used a single 1080p monitor only. 65% of the people use resolutions other than a single 1080p or they use multi monitor setups, mostly more than 1080p not less than 1080p like clueless console peasants with poor reading comprehension like to believe.

      One 1080p monitor = Single-monitor Desktop Resolution (1920×1080) = 35%

      Two 1080p monitors = Multi-monitor Desktop Resolution (3840×1080) = 29.03%

      Three 1080p monitors = Multi-monitor Desktop Resolution (5760×1080) = 2.38%

      etc

    5. dude even if 0.0001% used 4k, that still doesnt mean you cant do it yourself. in fact im sure you could play in 8k if you wanted to even if nobody else does. thats the nice thing about PCs, you can do your own thing

    6. Says 36.33% are using exactly 1920×1080 – not at least 1080p

That means many are using higher resolutions. Dumbass.

No wonder you don’t like PC’s – you wouldn’t know how to properly use one.

          1. And your point is…?
You said that “only the newest” games on discs required Steam and then I showed you a counterexample, and you finally showed an even better counterexample to your statement.
By the way, nice thread archeology :P.

          2. SteamWorks was not widespread until 2011. Late 2011…and not for every game.

      1. Then we should recall PC gaming to steam gaming i suppose.
BTW there are bunch of other services, if none of those would be profitable they would never be kept alive!

    1. You do realize that’s how surveys work right? They take a portion of the population and compare it to the masses. Just because steam doesn’t represent 100% of the PC community doesn’t mean you should discredit the survey

      1. Steam Survey however only takes a portion of the Steam-based Gaming population, it doesn’t take a portion of the entire PC Gaming population. That’s what he’s saying.

Ergo; Steam finds that Windows 10 is very popular with Digital PC Gamers. As Steam likely equates for ~70% of the entire PC Gaming Market (keeping in mind that a lot of Gamers still haven’t gone Digital), we can safely say that Windows 10 has a sizeable presence in PC Gaming overall, sure, but, that’s about it. We can’t be specific & quote an actual percentage, & we can’t publish those results as proof of “great adoption rates throughout the entire PC Gaming community,” since there’s no real proof of that.

Take this fact, for example; Windows 10 shares compared to Windows 7/8/8.1 are still minuscule once we factor in the non-Gaming Community – that statement is based on collected browser usage data (again however, that limits the findings to people that actually connect to the Internet, which even today automatically excludes a sizeable portion of the world). If that’s the case then though, how can we tell exactly what percentage of that equates to actual PC Gamers (as a whole, both Digital & Physical), & what doesn’t?

  2. Steam is for gamers + gamers want DirectX 12 = Windows 10 win in Steam Survey

List of DX12 games is longer each month. Players switch to new system because they want play that games. Its simple

    Released DX12 games:
    – Hitman
    – Gears of War Ultimate
    – Killer Instinct (DX11 game but only for W10)
    – Rise of Tomb Raider
    – Ashes of Singularity

    Upcoming DX12 games:
    – Forza Motorsport 6 Apex (and all others Forza games in future)
    – Quantum Break
    – Deus Ex Mankind Divided
    – Total War Warhammer
    – Watch Dogs 2
    – Star Citizen
    – possible Battlefield 5 and Mass Effect Andromeda

    Possible patch with DX12:
    – Just Cause 3
    – F1 2015
    – Witcher 3
    – Survarium
    – Ark: Survival Evolved

    1. This. Windows 10 is popular with Gamers, it doesn’t mean Windows 10 is popular in general.

Regardless of how much Microsoft wants us to fall for that when they say how many “devices” use Windows 10, instead of how many actual desktop/laptop computers.

  3. In before console peasants say that only 35% of PC gamers use 1080p:

35% of people used a single 1080p monitor only. 65% of the people use resolutions other than a single 1080p or they use multi monitor setups, mostly more than 1080p not less than 1080p like clueless console peasants with poor reading comprehension like to believe.

    One 1080p monitor = Single-monitor Desktop Resolution (1920×1080) = 35%

    Two 1080p monitors = Multi-monitor Desktop Resolution (3840×1080) = 29.03%

    Three 1080p monitors = Multi-monitor Desktop Resolution (5760×1080) = 2.38%

    etc

  4. This might change with AMD’s performance over Nvidia’s dealing with DX12 in combination of using Async Compute.
