Maximum Games and Kiss Ltd announced today that the PC version of Alekhine’s Gun, the spiritual successor to ‘Death to Spies’, will be available for global purchase on March 11th on Steam and all other leading retailers of digitally downloaded games.
As the press release reads, Alekhine’s Gun puts players in the shoes of WWII ex-KGB assassin, Agent Alekhine, who is tasked with eliminating conspirators during the 1960s Cold War era.
“Teamed up with the CIA, players will traverse eleven open levels set in both military and civilian locations in the U.S., Europe, and Cuba.”
With a range of weapons and disguises, non-linear levels, and multiple routes to success, Alekhine’s Gun promises to give players the freedom to explore and optimise their strategy within an intriguing historical context.
Christina Seelye, CEO of Maximum Games, said:
“Developing this game had its challenges. It was important to us to give fans of the ‘Death to Spies’ franchise the same classic stealth gameplay they love, while modernising the game to appeal to fans of the broader stealth genre.” She adds, “In the end, we are extremely pleased with the outcome and are beyond thrilled to finally get the game in players’ hands!”
Enjoy!

I loved Death to Spies and Moment of Truth. I’ll keep an eye on this one. And what happened to Death to Spies 3 anyway?
This is basically it. Same Studio, save Devs, just a different name because…. /shrug.
They tried to find a publisher to fund their game, but were unsuccessful, then they came to Kickstarter, but no one there was giving a sheet about it either (9k from 85k).
After that Maximum Games approached, offered money, but requested several changes, including changing the main hero’s association from SMERSH (which means Death to Spies) to CIA (to appeal the western audience), changing the title (obviously), removing two other playable characters, etc.
Funny thing is, there is no information that Haggard Games (the creator of DtS games) has anything to do with this game, even on their site.
Huh, that is weird, yeah.
Fortunately though it looks like Maximum didn’t do much tinkering with the Gameplay elements themselves, just made the story more “Western friendly”, so it’s still Death to Spies at its core, even without SMERSH.
Shame, but oh well. Next one up maybe.
Death to Spies took some elements from Hidden & Dangerous, including vehicles and large open levels, which aren’t present in Alekhine’s Gun. So I can’t really say that the core is still there.
Though to be fair, how many Jeeps did the Cold War really feature 😛
Anyway, I’m guessing it’ll either end up being Death to Spies: Absolution, or Death to Spies: Blood Money. I suppose we’ll know in a few days.
Wiki says that Haggard Games practically sold the game’s assets to Maximum Games, so don’t hold your breath much.
Like Crytek with Homefront? Hm. Cheers.
Okay, so… we were talking with comrades about the game. One of them said that he found a confirmation on Haggard forums that they are still in business, although they are making PC version only. Maximum Games is handling the console version, funding and publishing.
Moreover, when I went to forums myself, I found an admin post where he says that the title was indeed changed on publisher’s behalf, but everything else is still the same. You’re still working for KGB, and all that. If everything is the same it actually means that I will again see the doctor who was dancing on the sound of electricity when he was torturing a prisoner (that was srsly hilarious) from Death to Spies 3 demo.
Well, anyway I see that the metacritic score is horrible, and there is only a small chance that PC version will be better, but I still thought I should tell you.
“Metacritic score” bah!
Steam score, brah! 😛
