One of the biggest features of the Blackwell RTX 50 series GPUs is Multi Frame Gen (MFG in short). This feature is exclusive to the RTX 50 series. However, NVIDIA claims that this tech may one day come to the RTX 40 series GPUs.
In an interview with Digital Foundry, NVIDIA’s Bryan Catanzaro stated that NVIDIA may bring DLSS 4 MFG to the RTX 40 series GPUs in the future. When asked why DLSS 4 Multi Frame Gen is exclusive to the RTX 50 series GPUs, Catanzaro had this to say.
“I think this is primarily a question of optimization and also engineering and then the ultimate user experience. So, you know, we are launching this Frame Generation, the best multi-frame generation technology with the 50 series, and we’ll see what we are able to squeeze out of older hardware in the future.”
A small note here. In the interview, Alex asked about MFG coming to the RTX 30 series. However, I’m certain he meant the RTX 40 series. After all, the RTX 30 series never supported Frame Generation. [UPDATE: Or not. The new Frame Gen does not use the hardware Optical Flow accelerator. Instead, DLSS 4 Frame Gen uses the Transformer AI model. So, in theory, it should also work with the RTX 30 series.]
This falls in line with what NVIDIA has told the press. The main reason Multi-Frame Gen is exclusive to the RTX 50 series is because on the Blackwell GPUs, the hit of MFG in input latency is small when going from X2 to X4. This is a crucial thing for MFG.
We’ll talk more about DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Gen in a few days. All I can say right now is that NVIDIA will have its hands full with further optimizations for the RTX 50 series. So, don’t expect them to make it available to the RTX 40 series in the foreseeable future. It may happen one day. However, it won’t be soon.
To be honest, I don’t expect MFG to ever become available on the RTX 40 series. This feels more like a PR statement, similar to the one we got about Frame Generation on the RTX 30 series GPUs. When NVIDIA launched the RTX 40 series, it stated that it might one day bring this feature to the RTX 30 series. And, as you know, this hasn’t happened.
I’m merely speculating here, but there is no benefit for NVIDIA to go into all the trouble of optimizing MFG for its older GPUs. This tech was created for the Blackwell GPUs. And I know, this may be a bummer for some. However, this feature is not something that NVIDIA promised for the RTX 40 series. So, you can’t say that they’ve deceived you. It sucks. But then again, that’s what AMD may be also doing with FSR 4.0.
Stay tuned for more!

its off topic but everybody thought 5070 is better than 4090 with multi frame gen but i think even without multi frame gen he was not bluffing that 5070 will be better than 4090 cause these cards are made for neural rendering and new direct x so he was kinda right i think .as 2060 was better than gtx 1080 in games with ray tracing .

I appreciate you publishing this. It just goes to show just how beligerant nVidia are and how gullable they think thier customers are. If there ever was a case against any kind of brand loyalty, this is it.
If it does come to the Ada GPUs it won't be for a while because there is one constant with Nvidia for a long, long time. Pressure people to upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. Nvidia would happily see gamers upgrading from 40xx GPUs to Blackwells when they really don't need to.
AMD will limit FSR4 only to RDNA4 cards, so I'm surprised Nvidia is giving the older RTX series so many improvements. DLSS FGx2 will get a significant quality boost, as will DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction. Mega Geometry will also work on all GPUs and should improve performance in Alan Wake 2? I can't wait to see these improvements in action.
"… but there is no benefit for NVIDIA to go into all the trouble of optimizing MFG for its older GPUs"
So goodwill to old loyal customer considered as trouble now, what kind of shifted mindset is that ,John … is that how all 4090 owners think now, that they are some kind of elite customer looking at the owner of older generation card as peasant not worth a goodwill frmo manufacturer.
NVIDIA has a history of not bringing new features to old generations of GPU's. It was abnormal when they backported advancements for RTX 30 series to RTX 20 series, as NVIDIA didn't normally do that.
What alex meant is that since the original 2x framegen was NOT using the optical flow accelerator anymore (which was the original reason they said FG could not work on Ampere) could it be possible that 2x could be ported to 3000 series. He did NOT mean multi FG backported from 5xxx to 4xxx
Mathematically, it is possible on RTX30 series as they are using flip meters instead of HW acceleration for optical flow computation. Catanzaro however avoided responding to the frame time budget for per generated frame. I think by default the MFG will trigger Reflex 2 to happen. The frame warping kind of relates to that way.
legends say one day nvidia cards will be able to run old games at 60 fps without frame gen.

OH COME ONE BRO, WHO DOESNT HAVE REFLEX 2 BY NOW? BUY ANOTHER MONITOR THEY ARE CHEAP, CHEAPER THAN THE 4060, ITS MERE PENNIES, ITS NOT THE NVIDIA'S FAULT YOU USING THEIR PRODUCTS WRONG.
I fcking swear, these people,
So using their improperly manufactured, unethical, and illegal use of the public as a development tool then prohibit them from having access to the updated ai they were used to develop.
As an engineer I've been mandated to use cuda cores my entire career. Using the illegal, unethical, and bad products the way you want isn't a problem. The fact that you ha e to use them the way they say or you are prohibited from receiving the benefits that shouldn't require that. Cause nothing stops reflex from working on every monitor but the drivers. Nothing stops DLSS4 from working on an gpu with ai cores but the firmware and drivers. NVIDIA no longer makes consumer grade gpus. Stop living in the past. They make commercial(quadro) like cards at commercial grade prices, without giving you the commercial grade benefits and hardware, while using you to develop for the real commercial grade hardware. Stop living in the past.
wtf you talking about? Are you high? Also the future sucks the past was good, i want a card that can play games well, is that too much to ask?
"Someday" No thanks, I prefer Lossless Scaling
same ahah i don't even use the actual fake frame generation so it's not tomorow that i will use this multi fake frame geenration XD
yup no need to wait for it, that software from what i've seen is solid and works.
lossless scaling is completely different thing tho. It will not help you with future games so badly optimized they need fake 3 frames to hit 60fps.
I think you prefer the bliss found with ignorance.
lossless scaling can't make use of motion vectors so it will never achieve the same visual quality of frame gen on engine.
it's better than afmf, but is way way way worse than nvidia and amd frame gen when supported natively by the games.
i already dont use fake frame generation anyways
I do. It's great. Catch up.
"A small note here. In the interview, Alex asked about MFG coming to the RTX 30 series. However, I’m certain he meant the RTX 40 series. After all, the RTX 30 series never supported Frame Generation."
Nope, he meant RTX 30 series, because before Nvidia claimed that they can't bring FG to 30 series because it doesn't have as powerful optical flow accelerator as 40 series. And now with DLSS 4 FG Nvidia claims they replaced hardware optical flow with a very efficient AI model.
Exactly.
Yep, already updated the article.
Well said John 👍
People should just STFU and beying a whiny little b*tch. Tech progress and be happy about it, damn Dumb F*krS!
This is not on Nvidia and more on AMD. They didn't activate the FG on RTX30 series because AMD was barely competitive. RTX40 was rock solid (upper tier) & Nvidia had nothing to worry about market shares. But with the strides on FSR4, Nvidia is playing a placeholder on MFG for older gen RTX GPUs. If Nvidia sees FSR4 to be not that much of a deal to worry about, then they won't actuvate MFG.
Nope. Quadro(cuda) based monopolies for decades. That NVIDIA has prohibited any competition for for literally decades. How does a company stay competitive if the competition is allowed to prohibit them from being competitive. NVIDIA is the Apple. It's just a fashion statement. AMD was competitive. But people still trashed them for no reason for decades. When they were struggling against a conglomerate of corporations working and dealing under the table.
NVIDIA'S fault. Sue them. Hold them accountable. They have to be stopped. One monopoly wasn't enough for them.
To sell new cards, That's all I get from it.
YESSSS this is what my 4080 needs!
more fake frames!
please nVidia give us more, MOOOORE
I want to see my FPS counter go up into the thousands
We can already use Lossless Scaling.
