Call of Duty Doom 4

The next Doom may be revealed next month, new assets leaked from the canceled “Call of Duty Doom”

Doom fans, get ready for some exciting rumors. According to Tom Henderson, the next Doom game will be revealed next month. This will most likely happen during the Xbox June Showcase Event.

Sadly, we don’t know much about this new Doom game. In theory, it will be using the next iteration of the id Tech Engine, and it will only target current-gen platforms. So, I’m curious to see what id Software has in store for us. Will the new id Tech Engine be able to compete with Unreal Engine 5? And, will we get more Ray Tracing effects this time around?

Speaking of Doom, some assets from the canceled version of Doom 4, often called “Call of Duty Doom”, surfaced online.

In this GIF, we get to see animations of non-playable characters for the AI NPC state transitions system that were implemented for the game. Then, in the next tweet, we get to see some high-polygon count models. And, since some of you don’t use Twitter/X, I’ve included these screenshots in the article.

The first leak for this canceled Doom 4 game happened back in 2015. Back then, numerous screenshots surfaced from a behind-the-scenes trailer. Then, in 2020, new footage surfaced from that old version of Doom 4 (that video is no longer available). And then, in 2022, we got three new screenshots from it.

Doom 4 would originally take place on Earth, and featured gameplay mechanics similar to those of the Call of Duty games. However, during development, id Software felt that this was the wrong direction, and decided to cancel it.

Ironically, now that we have Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, there are players interested in this canceled version of Doom 4. Personally, I’d like to play this Call of Duty Doom game. However, I wouldn’t prefer it over the reboot we got in 2016. Doom 2016 is amazing, feels like a Doom game, and it’s the game all of us Doom fans wanted. Out of curiosity, though, I’d like to try that canceled Doom 4.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. as someone who liked rage despite its issues and also liked legendary i would enjoy a game like this, obviously its awful for a doom game, but you could make it a new ip, like a more action focused metro 2033, surely beats fallout 4, you cant possibly say fallout 4 looks better than this.

As for the new game, i did not like doom eternal for reasons stated below, i hope they make it more like 2016.

  2. Both this game and Valve’s game look so generic that I’m convinced they just used AI to create 90% of their assets.

  3. As much as I love DOOM I really would’ve liked a new Quake instead. Quake 4 was 19 years ago for crying out loud, a sequel is WAY overdue!

    1. Man, Quake 2 was my favorite PC game as a kid next to Doom. I have no faith in Bethesda-owned iD to deliver a worthy sequel, but it would be nice to see.

    1. I will always pick female protagonist if I can because I don’t want o stare at a dude’s a*s or hear him moan.

        1. I personally don’t care about how video game characters look, but I just don’t want to hear a dude moan in my ears as I climb, jump, or run.

  4. Looking forward to what idTech 8 will bring to the table, and whether it will still use the Vulkan API on PC.

Note that idSoftware has to develop a DX12 renderer anyway, because they need to get it running on the Xbox Series S with its measly 10 GB RAM, so in theory id could just port that one to PC and call it a day, like so many other studios are doing these days.

However, I’m pretty sure that idSoftware will once again go the extra mile to bring us PC players an exclusive Vulkan renderer with outstanding performance, to the point that even the Steam Deck should be able to handle it.

If done right, Vulkan can have better performance than DX12, as can be seen by Valve using Vulkan to translate DX12 games to be able to run those on SteamOS.

you just answered your own question, the next game probably wont have massive maps due to that ram limitation and they will have to stream alot of assets since they cant fit them all in the ram.

Goood this triggers me, but I’m striving to manage my nerd rage, breathe, I won’t rant, I won’t rant…

    1. thats ok i loved it and i thought it was one of the best games ever and how to bring up back i franchise , i did not like doom eternal, i also dont like quake 1 i think quake 2 is far superior.

  6. “Will the new id Tech Engine be able to compete with Unreal Engine 5?”

Why john? Why must every other game engine has to have amazing unreal engine stutters?

    1. The day id Software considers using UE, would be a very very very sad day! I expect that to not happen ever in my lifetime!

I was a huge fan of DOOM and DOOM 2 as a kid. When I played that 2016 DOOM reboot, I was significantly disappointed. It wasn’t fun at all, I felt like most of the guns sucked, the ones that were fun it seemed like I was always out of ammo for, I kept getting stuck on the floor while running around, and the visuals were a blurry mess even with Anti-Aliasing turned off. It was NOT an acceptable successor to the original DOOM games. I refused to buy or play DOOM Eternal due to how much I hated the 2016 DOOM reboot.

Sure, the optional Vulkan renderer was a nice curiosity at the time, since I think it was the first AAA game to include one. Unfortunately it’s a bit buggy, and doesn’t work at all anymore on PC (at least not for me and a number of others complaining on Steam Discussions). The game just crashes on launch even after a fresh install and deleting all of the game’s config files, and since the game is so old this issue will probably never be fixed, so now you can only play in OpenGL.

    1. i loved doom 2016 and i think its one of the best games ever, i only did not like the ending and how the hell levels never got massive and complex but were desert like linear areas, also could use a better editor.

I did not enjoy doom eternal for the most part, i hated the switch from uac sci fi and blood and gore to colorful rainbow cartoonish art style with medieval castles everywhere and knights. Also i dont like what they did to the gameplay, every combat section to the game is long with respawning enemies, in fact most of the game is repettive respawning enemy arena rooms and the game spawns enemy after enemy to you which are similar to the color coded enemies in dmc, you have to use specific weapons and firemodes in order to kill them or you wasting ammo, speaking of which there is very little ammo in the game, the shotgun starts with 12 ammo i think and its maximum is 24. Also the auto shotgun mode is useless because its nerfed so much that it exists only to use on a specific stone imp enemy type in the dlc. When i play a shooter and i have a auto shotgun, i want it to shred everything, like doom eternal, thats what auto shotguns do, i dont want it to be nerfed for “balancing” reasons as if i play a mp game. Also the levels are more linear than the 2016 one and the secrets are hidden in holes in the wall that feel like they were added there after the game was finished, like “oh sht we forgot to put secrets in” which are all collectables mind you, you dont get a plasma rifle in the second level like the first game, which had much better secrets and platforming sections, the doom eternal platforming gets tiring and you platform on floating platforms as if you play a psx platformer or something, considering how lead designer is a n64 doom fan, it makes sense how consolish the game feels. The levels are so linear that you have to use the map to teleport to previous sections to pick up the collectables and find the secrets you missed. So yeah you are not missing anything.

      1. I don’t know who’s more mentally sick, people who write comments like this or people who read them.

    2. You’re right, the Vulkan renderer of DOOM 2016 does indeed crash on the latest NVIDIA driver.

Please feel free to open a bug report on NVIDIA’s developer forum, so that the issue can be fixed on their end.

Note that the Vulkan renderer of DOOM 2016 still works perfectly on the Steam Deck, so the issue must be a relatively recent change to NVIDIA’s Vulkan driver, because it used to work around half a year ago, last I checked.

      1. The game has had this issue for at least several years. It’s a known issue. If it is an NVIDIA issue, and they actually cared to fix it, I’m sure they would have done so a long time ago.

  8. MS internal leaks game requirements.
    1) Are you unnecessarily introducing gender & gender barriers into your code or design?
    2) Are you creating playable female characters that are equal in skill and ability to their male peers. Are your female characters equipped with clothing and armor that fits their tasks? Do they have exaggerated body proportions?
    3) When the story allows, do you show male characters who display a full range of emotions, including joy, sadness, and vulnerability?

Doom Guy is finally dead. Microsoft killed him. Microsoft will also probably remove Vulkan API from the game and the game and throughout history that have used games like this to require OS upgrades. I would bank on a Windows 11 requirement so that they can get you on TPM 2.0 AKA giving the CIA/Mossad keys to the computer you no longer own. See PRISM program.

    1. your post is disturbing because we know its true, they propably will remove vulkan and depiste what i think about doom eternal it run so well on vulkan open gl, no directx support, wish more games did that.

“) Are you creating playable female characters that are equal in skill and ability to their male peers.”

I challenge you to find one game that doesnt do that, feels like this is a shot at spiderman’s mary jane stealth sections.

  9. CoD is gonna be interesting for me this year if it really does come to gamepass. After getting more into PC gaming I haven’t bought a CoD since Advanced Warfare. I would still check warzone or free weekends but it never gripped me enough to make the purchase. My friends would constantly complain about how much worse it is to play and we eventually started playing tons of other shooters available. Whether it be Fortnite, Battlefield, OW, Siege, CS or Apex we played most of the popular stuff but nothing ever felt as casual as CoD that I’ve gotten to try over the past few tests and what a lot of my friends have really glommed on to over the past few days. It’s been fun but now with the chance that CoD goes to gamepass I itll be interesting to see if Xdefiant can keep the lil niche its carved out by being cod that’s not $70.

For me I liked both 2016 and eternal but eternal felt too game-y like my ludonarrative dissonance was always up. I’d rather see how machine games tries to repair wolfenstein after that mess of the third title.

  10. Doom 2016 and Eternal were boring linear shooters that closed you off in tiny arenas and lacked the explorstion elements of the originals, whatever this is, it’s going to be worse than those considering Microsofts management.

  11. DOOM fans, prepare yourself for disappointment, prepare yourself for the 1st DOOM Slyer female and lbtgs+ hell creations. This is Microsoft after all.

  12. I ready somewhere it’s going to be an “origin” story of Doomslayer, a prequel and the game is set in a medieval world. Also, it’s likely title is ‘DOOM: The Dark Ages’
