WipeOut Phantom Edition PC Remaster-1

WipeOut gets unofficial remaster on PC with uncapped framerates, increased draw distance and better controls

Remember WipeOut? You know, the futuristic racing game from Psygnosis that was released on the first Playstation console? Well, in case you weren’t aware, a PC version of it came out alongside the PSX release, and it was horrible. And, after almost thirty years, we can finally play it properly on our platform with this unofficial remaster.

WipeOut Phantom Edition is an enhanced PC source port of the original game. This unofficial remaster of WipeOut uses game data from the PlayStation version, and features numerous quality-of-life improvements.

WipeOut Phantom Edition supports uncapped frame rate and high resolution rendering. It also supports distant geometry fade, allowing objects to fade into view smoothly with minimal pop-ins. Not only that, but PC gamers can expect increased view distance, ship lighting, and “PSX-accurate rasterization and blending.”

What’s also cool here is that this unofficial remaster of WipeOut comes with three collision response options. The first one is similar to BallisticNG whereas the second is similar to WipeOut 2. And, as you may have guessed, the third one is the vanilla/default collision that the original version featured. Moreover, the game fully supports both Keyboard and Gamepad.

Lastly, WipeOut Phantom Edition features additional options menus, a new music and sound effect system, configurable aspect ratio and widescreen support, as well as a new config file system. And yes, you can also use custom music tracks.

In short, this is a must-have for all WipeOut fans, and we highly recommend downloading it from here. As said, you’ll need the game data files from the original PlayStation USA-region version of Wipeout. You can either manually provide these files or supply bin/cue disk image files.

Have fun!

          1. This version worked immediately with my Dual Sense analog controller. Even without DS4Windows loaded.

  1. Is nobody going to bring up the fact that PrezidentTrump on Youtube exposed John being wrapped up in a Pedo sting on Crime Watch Daily?

  2. This game was hella fun!
But I’ll keep it that way in my memory only, don’t want to ruin that with my today’s standards in video games.

    1. Your standard should be that the game is fun. Not sure how today’s fun is any different than yesterday’s.

      1. Nope, my standards evolve just like everything else.
Maybe you like being frozen in time, but I don’t.
By your logics (lack of it), we should be playing Enduro until today.

        1. Not sure where you get that there’s a lack of logic in a fun game standing the test of time and continuing to be fun and enjoyable to play. A fun game doesn’t magically become a piece of sh*t just because your taste changed to match that of the modern day gaymer or game journo, you stupid f*ckwad.

  3. Very nice! A shame it uses the NTSC-U version though as its soundtrack is missing three tracks from the PAL release.

Hopefully they’ll also do this for WipEout 2097, Wip3out and especially so the PAL-only Wip3out Special Edition.

    1. It apparently supports mp3, ogg and wav, up to 32 tracks (all the Wipeout soundtracks are available on archive.org).

  4. This is amazing. It feels so good at 144 fps. Once moving at speed you can hardly tell how basic the graphics are. I also enabled a bloom reshade (Open GL BTW) to smooth out the graphics a bit and emulate some extra lighting (colour bleed). Unfortunately, I could not access the depth buffer to give MXAO and RTGI a go. If someone works out how to access the depth buffer, please do let me know. I also loaded up the music folder with a few Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, and Hardfloor tunes from my (now hardly touched) mp3 collection. I replaced the tunes that were in the UK PAL version that are missing from the USA version, and added more. Audio can also be output to a DualSense controller to give vibration/rumble feedback from bassy sounds.

    1. I renamed the exe to BatmanAK tricks nvidia into thining you are playing batman and you can use nvidia filters on it the Detail filter is great just turn down Hdr toning.

      1. Reshade works fine, I don’t think the Nvidia trick will work for adding any sort of AO or RTGI will it? Both of those require access to the depth buffer.

  5. lol I don’t want to be the one who constantly writes negative comments, but…

It’s possible to play the PS1 version with 60FPS and widescreen mod on several emulators (I know at least Duckstation can do it).
I think it’s even possible to use a HD textures mod…🤔
And Duckstation can eliminate all graphic artefacts of the original PS1 hardware, so it looks at the very least as good as this PC version.

And secondly, there’s also a GREAT alternative: some Wipeout mods (total conversion?) were made for “BallisticNG”. And it looks and feel even better.
Go search on Youtube “BallisticNG is the perfect Wipeout”!😉

  6. Guess this is only for those who can rip their own original version as the ones online aren’t the multi bin version it would seem.
