Full Path Tracing Mod released for id Software’s classic Quake

Modder ‘sultim-t’, the man behind the Path Tracing mods for Doom and Serious Sam TFE has released Quake Ray Traced. As the title implies, Quake Ray Traced offers full path tracing effects to id Software’s classic first-person shooter.

Quake Ray Tracing uses ray tracing to calculate global illumination, reflections, refractions, soft shadows and other visual effects. And below you can find a video that showcases this mod in action.

Sultim-t is also working on a path tracing mod for the first Half-Life game. Unfortunately, though, this mod has been delayed, and does not currently have any ETA.

You can download Quake Ray Traced from here. It’s also worth noting that by default, the game does not use DLSS 2. However, there is an installation guide via which you can enable it.

Have fun!

    1. I thought it was pretty good apart from the ambient glowing fog effect. Quad damage is pretty sick with this though.

      1. Yeah the volumietric fog with added “sky colour” is so bad, like purple fog everywhere inside buildings becouse the sky outside is purple makes no sense, the underwater effect is awfull, the water effect isn’t better either, then some specular added to surface materials coming from light sources are very glitchy and full of temporal noise, also too much bloom coming from lightsources… I mean it’s cool to have a free RTX mod like this and i respect that, but in the end i didn’t like it at all

  1. I mean… in the thousands for a GPU/rig today mainly just for an photo-op just to say: “hey, let’s focus on mirrors, lighting, shadows, interpolation fake rendering artifacts, etc. and say fk you to hyber-realistic models/environments, advanced MoCap, collision, advanced AI for NPCs and make a shltzz load of money doing nothing but adding a few perks here and there to these idiots’ hardware! YEAH!!… We, the board, loves this idea ?!” ?

    1. “and say fk you to hyber-realistic models/environments, advanced MoCap, collision, advanced AI for NPCs”

Excluding AI, we already have all of those, but it must be costly for small studios to implement, and who’s to say we woudn’t need better hardware for even better features based on what you post?

      1. I never said that the industry was not *equipped* with the latest tech, I said, that they were mainly focusing on the BS that I quoted above them saying, sleepy. ?

    2. @Vincent

You do realize this is a free, fan-made mod, right?

Also, accurate lighting and shadows are exactly what makes models/environments appear “hyper-realistic”, which is the whole point of RT.

    1. Curious, what benefit a ray tracing exclusive game would have? Even VR enthusiasts have a better case for exclusivity, so far…

      1. That way the developers won’t have to waste time and resources on rasterized assets, allowing the game to be much more optimized. Although considering that probably we’ll over 50% people have non-RTX GPS, I doubt RT exclusive games are going to happen any time soon.

  2. I always thought Quake 1 would’ve been a better choice for Nvidia’s official Quake RTX release. Quake 1 always had much more distinct and atmospheric lighting, outside of just plain being a better game.

    1. Not really… I think it would look too dark and rather monotonous overall, no matter how undeniably cool Q1 is, but you probably want something a little more… lively for the general audience as a tech/marketing demo.

    3. Keeping the tradition alive: back in 1996 glQuake was one of the first patches that kickstarted the 3D accelerator revolution.

    1. wrong lol i’ve played every quake game since the beggining back in 1996, quake 2 is overall the best when it comes to deathmatch, quake 1 feels too dated because it lacks crouch compared to quake 2-3, even tho quake 1’s atmosphere is cool.

      1. Wrong lol. I dont care how many Quake games youve played, it doesnt make you more qualified to tell me what game I like more.

“too dated because it lacks crouch” ?

        1. It’s not just a matter of taste. I have never ever heard anyone praising the sequel over the first game. Quake 1 is the definition of perfection in first person shooter genre..

        2. Quake 2 had out of box 64 player support out of box hardware acceleration support unlike quake 1, new gameplay improvements were crouch and it was 1st game or one of em that started the gun being off to the side of the screen it wasnt in the middle of the screen like outdated quake 1/doom 1 lol, by the way quake 2 also had NPC’s before half life also quake 2 engine was first heavily licensed engine aswell, lets not forget the edge is the best deathmatch map of all time, plus quake 2 rocket launcher takes more skills than quake 1/3 because the rockets move slower got to aim ahead of people more and rocket launcher doesnt dominate everyone like quake 1, lets not forget the best quake weapon of all time the raigun was introduced in quake 2 also.

im more qualified than all of you klds, who never used to play quake 1 on mplayer.com back in 1996 your opinions are completely irrelevant.

      3. A lot of times the preference for something is marked in the brain during the teen and early 20’s of age. So people who played something during that time would have it remembered as their glory days and compare that standard to other games the rest of their lives.

    2. I think those games are so similar that i don’t even bother ranking them. It boils down to which atmosphere you think it’s best.

      1. Yeah, I prefered the Gothic aesthetic to the scifi one. Quake 2 felt clunky to me too, and slower compared to Quake 1. I Wasnt a fan of multiplayer until Q3A.

  3. If this was a mod for some woke game nobody cares about it would have at minimum 10 images and 2 embedded videos. Would’ve been nice to not dig past the article to find examples of this mod. No, posting a video for a similar Half-Life mod doesn’t count. Do better, as the kids would say.

    1. Funny thing is that the video is dedicated to Quake RTX, and showcases its Ray Tracing effects. It took you more time to write this comment than check the video, lol.

      1. I can write comments while doing other things that earn me money. The time expended is nil compared to dropping what I’m doing to look at a video that may or may not be relevant to the article. While it’s not your fault the uploader is a r**ard at titling his videos appropriately, my point still stands.
