Far Cry – Definitive Edition Mod vs Original Comparison Video

Modder ‘DarkChampion’ is currently working on a graphics mod for the first Far Cry game, called Far Cry Definitive Edition. And although there isn’t any ETA on when this mod will come out, the modder released a comparison video between the modded and the original/vanilla versions.

The primary focus of this mod is to improve the game’s Level of Detail values. As such, the modder has increased general Level View Distance by almost 3 times. Moreover, he deleted the LODs for Geometry and Textures. This will result in a more cohesive image, though there will be a noticeable performance hit. Additionally, he made some changes to the FOG Distance, and more vegetation for many levels.

Furthermore, the modder increased the running speed for all weapons, added the new mutant Screwed with working animation from the Far Cry Demo, and made some AI tweaks.

The end result stays true to the aesthetics of the original/vanilla version. However, and thanks to the improved Level of Detail, the game can now look better on modern-day hardware.

Enjoy the following comparison video and stay tuned for more!

  1. I only notice a very slight difference because Im focused on looking for them side by side.

If you swapped my game to this version without telling me I might not notice. Not to degrade the modder per se, Im sure there’s some effort put into it – but it seems a lot of visual game mod enhancements sort of barely make a difference.

  2. Well LOD sure is impressive and no one ever managed to get it working this way but that’s not enough to call it Definitive Edition, everything else is kept in vanilla state

  3. IF they did it…
They would just release one of the console variants but for PC…
and possibly add RTX for 10% improvement at a 60% performance loss.

  4. Barely any difference…slightly sharper water reflection/refraction, and few more tress in some scenes. And yes, that one small waterfall that was missing in the original!

  5. In the first minute all of the before and after screenshots are from different angles and zoom levels, so it’s almost impossible to tell what’s different. I can see some differences in LOD on some things, but overall the majority of visuals look the same. Most of the differences appear to be better LOD on trees and vegetation in the distance, some textures have better LOD at a distance, and some ground meshes have better LOD at a distance.

  6. Really bad video… It’s at most a tiny mod for some LOD, some sharper rock textures and stronger fog which is for worse… Not to claim a WHOA DEFINITIVE EDITION HERE BOYS
