Yesterday, id Software released the RTX patch for Doom Eternal. This latest update adds support for Ray Tracing Reflections and NVIDIA’s DLSS tech. Thus, and before publishing our PC benchmarks, we’ve decided to share some 4K native screenshots.
In order to capture these screenshots, we used an Intel i9 9900K with 16GB of DDR4 at 3600Mhz, NVIDIA RTX 3080, Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 471.11 driver. We’ve also set the in-game settings to Ultra Nightmare and we did not use the DLSS setting.
As said, this RTX patch adds support for Ray Tracing Reflections. As such, there are only specific areas that highlight these new reflections.
The good news here is that the game runs with more than 90fps in native 4K and on Ultra Nightmare settings. Therefore, and with the ability to enable DLSS, we can safely say that a lot of RTX gamers will be able to enjoy these Ray Tracing effects.
For comparison purposes, we’ve also included some non-RT screenshots. The Ray Tracing screenshots are on the first screenshots, whereas the non-RT screenshots are second ones.
Enjoy and stay tuned for our “Ray Tracing & DLSS” benchmarks!

Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition use newer version of raytracing – DirectX DXR 1.1 released in late 2020. Those new function are not supported in Vulkan Raytracing extension 1.0 which is based on on DirectX DXR 1.0 (2018). It is not possible to create full RTGI in previous version of DXR 1.0 or Vulkan 1.0
If you want RTGI you need wait for next game from ID Software using DirectX 12 Ultimate with DXR 1.1 or newer. Studio was recently acquired by MS so now they can focus on newest version of DirectX, In future games they won’t be limited by old Vulkan API
Rather disappointed with their approach of implementing reflections only.
Vulkan raytracing extension 1.0 works like DirectX DXR 1.0 (released in 2018). You can’t implement complex effects like in new Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition which use DXR 1.1 (released in 2020)
Stop spewing nonsense.
You haven’t got a clue of what you’re talking about.
Quake 2 RTX is fully path traced and it runs on Vulkan.
DXR 1.0 could do any effects you wanted already, original Metro Exodus 2019 release had RTGI, it was inferior due to the way the developers designed it, has nothing to do with the API version.
DXR 1.1 was an optimization update.
Quake 2 RTX is using proprietary Vulkan extensions from nVidia, Doom Eternal does not.
Vulkan raytracing extension 1.0 is just migrated DXR 1.0. Every time when MS release new API such as DXR, DirectML, next version HLSL open source community create own version. But this take some time, usually a year or two because Khronos need to support more operating systems than DirectX. In late 2021 or early 2022 Khronos will release new Vulkan raytracing extensions 1.1 with all new features from DXR 1.1
I know, I was explaining this to Putin.
Those people just hate MS and Windows. They can’t understand that someone need to create new features like DXR before Khronos can create own open version.
There is a reason why DXR was created by MS & Nvidia in 2018 and we need wait 2 more years to open Vulkan version 1.0. For example DirectML (machine learning) was released in 2019 and still don’t have any open source version
Quake 2 RTX was using the Nvidia VK extension at the beginning, and it was updated to use the official VK_KHR_ray_query extension not long after it became available.
Wrong. Vulkan 1.0 is equal to DirectX DXR 1.0. Both of those API had limited access to ray casting. This is why Metro and all other games done single bounce. New Metro Exodus can’t be even run on DXR 1.0 and require DXR 1.1 because of infinite ray bonces added in DXR 1.1 as inline raytracing
DXR 1.0 was released in 2018
Vulkan Raytracing 1.0 was released in 2020 (migration of DXR 1.0)
DXR 1.1 was released min 2020
You need wait a year or two before Khronos take DXR 1.1 and create own version of new API as Vulkan Raytracing 1.1. This is how this works. Deal with it
Wrong. You can check – official vulkan raytracing extensions are just open version of DXR 1.0 released 2 years earlier. You need wait at least 1-2 years before Khronos create open source version of DXR 1.1
Of course we don’t know if anyone will be waiting for Vulkan RT 1.1 because few months ago MS acquired ID Software (Doom) and Machine Games (Wolfenstein). Those studios in new games will use DirectX 12. Without studios using Vulkan in games new Vulkan 1.1 will be DOA
Path tracing is too slow and completely pointless in real-time. It’s better to pre calculate that stuff, which is what games have been doing since the f*king ’90s. Real-time global illumination, at least using ray tracing is stupid.
is it pointless? or are just too poor to afford hardware? yeah you are too poor. Metro shows how big upgrade it is.
I am probably one of the few people with a 3090 founders edition, so no. Path tracing in real-time is dumb 95% of the time. It makes sense for moving area lights and not much else. Anything static should be baked in advance.
This game looks incredible with ray tracing. Don’t listen to the rabble who try to one up each other talking sh*t in every single thread.
the performance hit isn’t worth it, especially in a game like this.

Which is the screenshot with RTX on and which is the one with RTX off?
None of you losers have even played the game clearly. Just a bunch of wet blankets covered in piss from a nightmare about actually having to kiss a girl.
that… i like dsog for its lack of censorship but boy it just shows right wing morons are as bad as left wing. Bunch of retards hating themselves and projecting it here. If I dislike some games or direction they took i just dont play them, whining over internet boards will not change anything and just shows how retarded some ppl are.
This sh*t sounds like it’s created by a computer trying to mimick immature idiots from 1999 on AOL chat. I see you say the same sh*t about every single game. I get it and some games deserve the criticism but talking sh*t about the game because you can pick a f*king unicorn doomguy is peak level petty.
