Hitman 3 screenshots-2

Epic Games is looking into allowing Steam Hitman owners to transfer their progress to EGS

Back in August 2020, IO Interactive announced that Hitman 3 will be timed-exclusive on the Epic Games Store, and that Hitman 3 will act as a platform for the entire trilogy, allowing players to import locations their progression and unlocks that they own from previous HITMAN games.

Back then IO Interactive stated that it wanted to “make it a seamless process for our PC players to enjoy Hitman 3 on a different PC platform and continue to enjoy the benefits of our World of Assassination”. But sadly this may not be the case anymore.

According to a recent blog post on IO Interactive’s website, you won’t be able to carry the progress over to EGS if you own the game on Steam. If you want to replay/start any of the Hitman 2 levels in the upcoming Hitman 3 title, you will have to buy the Hitman 3 Access Pass.

So basically, Steam owners of Hitman 1 and 2 can’t import the levels, and they will have to again buy the game via Epic Games Store in order to import them, which is indeed very frustrating for long time HITMAN players.

This is because Hitman 2 was never released on the Epic Games Store, so you have to buy this game again. Though, IO interactive plans to offer an 80% discount on the Hitman 3 Access Pass that will be running for 14 days after the game is released on January 20 2021.

This move is going to frustrate a lot of Hitman fans, and right now it’s a mess for players playing on the PC.

As IO said:

“We’ve done everything possible to make this process smooth and player-friendly.

However, due to various circumstances out of our control, we want to acknowledge that the process is different to our initial plans for PC players. We also want to share some of the initiatives we’ve set-up to make sure that PC players the chance to keep enjoying the benefits of the World of Assassination.”

The progression will carry over as expected but it can only be done through a web browser and a separate website when it goes live, before Hitman 3 releases. It’s not possible to do it in-game.

“After completing the carryover process, Hitman 2 players will be able to start Hitman 3 with their existing player profile, XP rank, location mastery levels, location mastery unlocks, challenge progress, challenge unlocks and Elusive Target suits/unlocks,” the blog reads. “All of those things are what we call ‘progression’. It’s not possible to pick and choose elements to carryover. It’s all or nothing.”

“The carryover process requires an IOI Account and can only be done through a web browser; it’s not possible to do it in-game. We will have the website ready to go before launch, but it is not live yet. Once it is ready, we will share the news via ioi.dk and update this post. “

However, it appears that Tim Sweeney has just responded on Twitter regarding this move from IO interactive, and according to him the team is looking into working this with IO.  So there is still a ray of hope for STEAM users.

  1. So we can’t play the content we already own because they decided to exclusively move to the EGS. And their response is to offer an 80% discount on that content we already own.

      1. Ya I know how it works. I can play the Hitman 1 levels inside Hitman 2 because I own Hitman 1. What they’re saying here is you will have to rebuy the H2 levels for H3 because the steam purchase isn’t compatible with the EGS version.

Unless you wait for the Steam version I guess.

          1. The player progression is tied to the Hitman website account afaik. The issue here is importing the Hitman 2 levels that were bought on Steam onto the EGS version of Hitman 3.

    1. Yup. That theory seems to hold at least for now, but if Sweeney comes out with a plan, then don’t know what all rules are going to be relaxed and/or implemented.

Can’t say for sure what comes next after the latest Tweet from Tim though.

      1. Not a great position for them to be in, especially with people already angry about the EGS timed exclusivity. I’d think they would rethink this.

        1. Ah, you are correct man ! I wasn’t aware of RDR2, but yes Borderlands 3 was for 6 months. My bad, I forgot.

I still had the notion that most of the big games are going to be exclusive for 1 year on EGS. So it appears Tim Sweeny being lenient here more like ! 😀

        1. Metro Exodus released on MS Store after 3 month. So it’s really about f**king Steam & GOG, not caring for developers.

    1. Normally I’d agree but the problem with the new Hitman games is progression is locked until you connect to their online servers which makes the pirated version a hollow experience.

      1. I just play for curiosity sake, since i hate how they wrapped up this reboot thing. It’s not bad, but i much prefer the classic games, even Absolution, and i have zero desire to replay these sandbox levels over and over, no matter the progression.

        1. I hear ya. I would rather have more smaller levels as opposed to these large ones, mostly because they’re pretty hit and miss imo. I don’t find most of them that interesting. My favorites are the gimmick levels like the Bank. Heck I had more fun in the smaller training missions than most of the big ones because the tone was so much cooler like in Hawk’s Bay.

The progression does add lots of replayability though and I’ve sunk more hours into these games than I ever did the ones before because of it. The engine and polish is what keeps me playing, I find the story, tone and locations pretty underwhelming.

          1. Yeah, i can see why they choose this route, it’s all about player retention (is there a in game store by chance?).

          2. Nah its not that bad. There’s the usual costumes and challenge packs you can buy as DLC but no upgrade tokens or Hitman coin that you can buy with real money.

    2. Piracy will always exist and so will anti-piracy software. I don’t plan on ever changing my practices so long as predatory cash grabbing corporations like EA and Activision exist. If I find a game really deserves it, I’ll give them the money I save from not wasting it on disappointing games.

  2. “However, due to various circumstances out of our control”

Oh so I guess the publisher must be at fault for Hitman 3 being EGS exclusive. Oh wait… these f*cks ARE the publishers!

  3. This is what happens when companies care only for greed and money, they can keep their garbage game I m good

  4. Yes, after you Rebuy the first 2 games. IO Interactive is a piece of sh*t company. No different from 4A Games. IO Interactive accounted for people rebuying the games in Epic. They new they’d make a killing from all these idiots that will justify anything. At this point we need to stop blaming Epic for this. It’s the publishers/devs that took the deal. Epic will always be a Epic. You can’t blame a snake for snaking. But you can blame the idiot that keeps hanging out in the snakes lair.

IO interactive literally have ZERO RESPECT for it’s customer base for doing this. Just like 4A Games (Metro Exodus) if these developers could make a game and get the highest pay out for their work; without you or anyone ever playing the game, they’d do it. This is a NEXT level and beyond greed. With a side of F*ck you & Zero respect to sop up the gravy of insult added to injury. It’s just sickening what IO interactive is doing.

  5. If you own a game on one pc platform, you should own it by default on every other pc platform and have access to the same savegames. That’s how it should be!

  6. Here’s a novel idea that will fix this problem, RELEASE THE F**ING GAME ON STEAM ALONG WITH ALL YOUR OTHER PREQUELS!

    1. That’s always been the case, EGS just offset the asscociated costs from MT’s in Fortnite. Being greedy doesn’t give you brownie points.

    2. I’m pretty sure all retailers take a 30% cut. The argument before Steam was that brick and mortar stores had to stock the physical product. This is part of Epic’s argument against the Apple app store’s 30% cut; there is no brick and mortar physical cost anymore.

  7. Shouldn’t have made it exclusive. And those who supported exclusivity deserved not being able to transfer.
If you wanna play this – it was cracked day 1.
