It appears that the founder and ex-chief creative officer of Sweden’s Avalanche studios Christofer Sundberg has set up a brand new development studio. Since departing from Avalanche in 2019, Sundberg went quiet about his next gaming career move.
However, he recently broke the silence on Twitter, and announced his return to gaming with the formation of a new studio, Liquid Swords.
Hey! I just announced my new game development studio LIQUID SWORDS. #LiquidSwords @StudiosSwords pic.twitter.com/6i4dD6zzci

In a recent Facebook post, the Just Cause creator told this studio is set to focus on open-world action titles. The studio is going to be headquartered in Stockholm, but it will have a semi-distributed team with multiple studio locations located worldwide.
A press release says Liquid Swords will be focused on open world action, explosions, shareable experiences and memorable game moments for next-generation consoles, streaming platforms and PC. Sundberg goes on to say that the new games will be “focused on high action and giant spectacle”.
Nothing much is shown, aside from a sole image that could either be a tease, or just a branding. Liquid Swords studio name is actually a reference to one of the greatest RAP albums of all time, which is Wu Tang member GZA’s solo project Liquid Swords.
“I’ve taken a one year break from the games business and it was a very much needed break indeed. It has given me time to think about what I really want to create with a new studio. What remains identical to my way of building and running Avalanche Studios over the last 17 years is a no-nonsense, game development-focused approach,” Sundberg wrote.
“The games we create at Liquid Swords are focused on high action and giant spectacle. After living and breathing the Just Cause franchise from the day I started Avalanche Studios to the eventual sale of the company, I am excited to come back and create spectacular experiences for players to explore, share and enjoy.”
“The ultimate goal of Liquid Swords is to bring back game development to where it should be: intensely creative and fun while at the same time bringing game development forward with a strong focus on building innovative action experiences rather than business plans and spreadsheets. That said, Liquid Swords is a business, not a playground for aimless ideas. Our swords are sharpened, our mission is set and we could not be more excited about what the future holds.”
Stay tuned for more!
Hello, my name is NICK Richardson. I’m an avid PC and tech fan since the good old days of RIVA TNT2, and 3DFX interactive “Voodoo” gaming cards. I love playing mostly First-person shooters, and I’m a die-hard fan of this FPS genre, since the good ‘old Doom and Wolfenstein days.
MUSIC has always been my passion/roots, but I started gaming “casually” when I was young on Nvidia’s GeForce3 series of cards. I’m by no means an avid or a hardcore gamer though, but I just love stuff related to the PC, Games, and technology in general. I’ve been involved with many indie Metal bands worldwide, and have helped them promote their albums in record labels. I’m a very broad-minded down to earth guy. MUSIC is my inner expression, and soul.

That studio name…
They wanted to name it Gender-Fluid Swords but thought that’d be too obvious
Lmao ??? You’re Wild’n Homie.
Did you even read the article?
That would be cool if it were true.
Just cause 5 on hold….
Nope, these guys haven’t worked in JC game since the beginning of JC 3. The Just Cause franchise is now worked on by Avalanche NY & any other new scrub that joins Avalanche. The veterans pawned the game off to the younger studios because Enix couldn’t stop flip flopping during the development for JC 3. Avalanche STOCKHOLM haven’t worked on a Just Cause game since the infancy of Just Cause 3s development.
Who cares about that plot? It’s basically about some US fed doing regime change bs in another country.
Too bad they couldn’t take Just Cause Franchise with them. That franchise just went downhill once Avalanche New York took over. So sad, Rico Rodriguez deserves better. My most favorite franchise ruined to Sh*ts. ????? These guys weren’t innocent by any stretch either. Everytime they got a new IP they would place the veterans on those (Mad Max & Rage 2) and send the scrubs over to Just Cause 3 & 4. That’s what ruined the damn franchise. During Just Cause 3 they were doing mad Max and during Just Cause 4 they were doing Rage 2.
Just cause 4 was pretty bad game if I’m not mistaken. Buggy, badly optimized as well. Have they patched the game so that we can now bind different Keyboard keys according to our liking.?
There was a thread on STEAM, in which users were frustrated ’cause there was no option to bind or change any of keys, and some of the default Combo keys have been uneasy for many users to use.
In some of the game areas/level the game looks worse than JC3 visually/graphically.
I really love the series too and i think JC3 is criminally underrated by the fans, i mean it’s only improvements over JC2, better gunplay, no hide & seek with those damn upgrades, overall more mayhem and that Wingsuit is just awesome, i don’t really miss the big cities, too bad they didn’t worked on the land vehicle physics for this time again but who needs a f*cking car when you can call for a jet in the middle of nowhere or just use that sweet holy Wingsuit ? At least in JC3 they gave us a far better alternative to cars, also the DLCs are great too, check them if you didn’t play them.
Rage 2 gave me headaches and nausea, f*k that game
Coudn’t stomach Rage 2 either, game is just empty garbage.
Just cause plot is just an excuse to blow things, they can create a new IP called “Regime change: America F year” where a CIA agent go to Botswana to spread ghey s3x, based on a true story of the Trump administration.
“A press release says Liquid Swords will be focused on open world action, explosions, shareable experiences and memorable game moments for next-generation consoles ”
ah one of those games
Hoping for a Just Cause like game.
Not many games out there like it, and i doubt Square Enix is willing to bring it back.
“liquid swords” – is that a slang term for painful diarrhea?
Oh look, yet another “here’s a new dev team formation news, no games announced yet” post, who gives a F?
Fans of Gza I see.
