AMD’s RDNA 2-based “Big Navi” GPU will arrive before the next-Gen Consoles, says AMD’s CFO Devinder Kumar

AMD’s Devinder Kumar,  the company’s Chief Financial Officer/CFO, has confirmed that NAVI 2 will be AMD’s “first RDNA 2 product”. He confirmed this at the Bank of America 2020 Securities Global Technology Conference.  Also see BofA Securities.

So we can expect RDNA 2-based products before it becomes available on next-generation of consoles. Based on this confirmation and the fact that NAVI 2 card is going to be the first RDNA 2-based graphics silicon, seems to indicate that it might come ahead of the next-gen consoles, which are also based on the RDNA 2 architecture. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5 are set for launch around this holiday period, so we can expect to see RDNA 2 GPUs before November 2020.

Assuming the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles will leverage this very same “architecture” and are expected to launch this holiday season, so Big NAVI 2x must be releasing sooner than expected.

” There’s a lot of excitement for Navi 2, or what our fans have dubbed as the Big Navi” says Devinder Kumar, AMD’s CFO, at the recent Bank of America Securities Global Technology Conference. “This will be our first RDNA 2 based product.”

“Big Navi is a halo product,” Kumar added. “….enthusiasts love to buy the best, and we are certainly working on giving them the best. The RDNA 2 architecture goes through the entire stack….it will go from mainstream GPUs, all the way up to the enthusiasts, and then the architecture also goes into the game console products…as well as our integrated APU products. This allows us to leverage the larger ecosystem, accelerate the development of exciting features like ray tracing and more.”

He reiterated previous claims that AMD remains “on track to launch our next-generation Zen 3 CPUs and RDNA 2 GPUs in late 2020“.

But of course, NVIDIA is also rumored to release their next-gen GeForce RTX 3000 Ampere series of GPUs. So the competition is going to be very tough this coming September or October. RDNA 2 is coming to AMD’s “entire” product stack, including APUs (CPUs with integrated graphics).

All of this indicates that NAVI 2x is going to be big and powerful, also having support for new features like Mesh Shaders, Variable Rate Shading, “Hardware Accelerated Raytracing”, giving it a huge performance uplift and power efficiency than previous-gen RDNA 1 products.

AMD’s CFO also talked about CDNA, AMD’s next-gen compute-oriented graphics architecture.

According to Kumar: “There are some gaming features that are not needed in compute. And then there are some compute features that are not needed in gaming. So to gain efficiency and performance, we have decided to bifurcate the architecture. We see this area as a tremendous growth opportunity for both gaming and data center GPUs over the next five years, and the bifurcation of our roadmap will allow us to optimise for the workload and for the used cases that we see so that we can grow revenue in the GPU space.”

With gaming and compute graphics hardware requiring a different feature set and optimizations, AMD can cut unnecessary features from both AMD’s gaming graphics designs, and compute oriented products, if need be, since AMD has decided to “bifurcate” the architecture.

Both AMD and Nvidia plan to release their next-gen GPUs around the September 2020 timeframe, which will completely shake up the PC gaming market.  But can AMD really compete with the likes of Nvidia’s Titan or RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards ? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. If raytracing is every truly going mainstream, it is going to be via AMD. Console dominance has a lot of sway.

    1. consoles are having ray tracing as well, so it makes for AMD to include this in their entire Big navi lineup.

      1. Hardware accelerated ray tracing is part of the RDNA2 architecture, it’s not specific in any way to the consoles…

    2. I am convinced that RTRT is the future of gaming but it will only be implemented a little at a time for years to come.

      1. I’m sure you’re right. I’m also convinced it will be used sparingly and mostly subtle ways. These whole screens effects, while stunning, aren’t very efficient. I say this assuming the RT on these things is very entry level. I could be wrong.

  2. Well, not too far away now. I’m not planning on a GPU upgrade right now. My RTX 2070 Super is taking care of things fine but I may upgrade at some point in the upcoming generation if prices are reasonable.

Anyway, it’s always fun for me to see what the next gen GPUs can do.

    1. RTX 2070 super should be more than enough for today’s demanding games, and even some future titles. You game on 1440p?

      1. Yeah I agree as well, at the same time September is so damn close I almost just wait for the 3080 Ti at this point and go all out or get the NAVI 2 if it owns.

Honestly though a 2070 Super is really solid, you could always roll it and then upgrade to a 3080 Ti or 3080, etc.

If you think about it all the heavy hitters will come out around that time(the new GPU launch), so that is something to think about if it is worth it now. Of course if you play at 144 FPS with 64K screen then yeah a upgrade from a 980 Ti will be huge.

      1. 2 generations back. It was a GTX 980 Ti. It’s glory days are long over now though. I needed something more.

  3. Hope for early release, I live in Argentina, a day less or more could be the difference between one price, double the price or the impossibility to get the product at all.

    1. Yeah. I fear this launch is going to be insane, I would even wait up all night for the online stores to get the pre order etc(I did that for My 1080 Ti, next day it almost doubled). With all the world sh|t happening etc it could be really brutal to get a card and like you said you know they are going to price gauge the sh|t out of all of us 🙁

Anyways good luck and I hope you get a solid price plus the card you want!

  4. We can only hope AMD has products that will shut Nvidia up who took full advantage with it’s DXR GPU’s aka the RTX 2000 series. Hopefully AMD can finally compete on the highend so we don’t see another two years of $1200 custom GPU’s like the 2080 Ti…

    1. Honestly I doubt AMD’s motto and plan. Beating Nvidia is not an easy task. We don’t know yet how powerful big Navi is going to be, and Nvidia might have a much bigger GPU with the RTX 3000 series which might throw back AMD once again.

I hate to be pessimistic but my gut feeling doesn’t allow me believe AMD’s claimed performance gains.

  5. I hope they also announced mid class gpu for this new architecture. High class/enthusiast gpu is out of my budget…

  6. How are they going to compete with Nvidia’s next gen cards when they haven’t even put anything to compete with current cards? I really have no faith they will deliver but competition is good and hopefully they put out something amazing and price friendly.

    1. They aren’t. These “big Navi” cards are going to beat the RTX Super and 2080 Ti while costing less. Then nvidia will release their 3000 series and at least some of those will be above anything AMD can offer yet again.
With pricing being what it is these days the performance crown doesn’t matter. What matters are cards under 400 dollars and their TDP. nvidia has better TDP in all segments pretty much. I remain skeptical if RDNA2 can change that.

  7. Noice ! can’t wait to see if AMD can really beat those flagship RTX models. I have my doubts tho. It’s kinda lame to make such bold commitments before the launch of any product. but hwy, who knows Big navi might be a killer GPU after all ?

  8. I can’t see them beating Nvidia’s new cards, besides I think NV have been holding back their tech as there was no competition or need to upgrade. I hope I’m wrong as it would drive down those prices but sadly I doubt it.

  9. Very nice, seems like it could potentially be amazing! I can’t wait to see the full details in September or earlier. Man I so want AMD to be back in the GPU sector like they made their come back in the CPUs, it really be something.

From all the design stuff and docs it seems like the new design is really going to pay off and AMD went full out with it, I even dare say they Ryzened it. Even though I am a Nvidia Man when it comes to GPUs with My 1080 Ti I honestly think this GPU is going to really make a mark this time and AMD have invested in it hard core and for the long run in all avenues.

Man I really wish it was September already and We knew what NAVI 2 and the 3000’s really looked like. Feels like it is going to be an insane GPU cycle and one for the books in both camps.

  10. on track to launch our next-generation Zen 3 CPUs and RDNA 2 GPUs in late 2020“.

They said that easily 5 times this year and with b550 coming in june Zen 3 is coming this year even if its just a few models. RDNA 2 i guess good news i hope they compete head to head with nvidia again or just beat them.

So sick of this radeon not competitive nonsense it hurts us all.
