The Witcher 3 has sold more copies on the PC in 2019 than all consoles combined

CD Projekt Red has released its latest financial charts, and revealed that The Witcher 3 sold more copies on the PC than all consoles combined in 2019. This is huge and shows the long legs of PC games, something that a lot of companies have acknowledged over the last few years.

As we can clearly see, the PC platform is the most successful one for The Witcher 3 these past couple of years. Surprisingly enough, in 2015, the PS4 sold more copies than the PC version. Then, in 2016, these two platforms were equal. However, in both 2017 and 2018, the PC was able to surpass PS4. And, in 2019, the PC sales of The Witcher 3 are more than all of the console sales.

My guess is that this graph includes all of the special discounts that CD Projekt RED has offered. Thus, this most likely includes the GOG Special Sale events. What this basically means is that PC revenue percentage does not equal to the PC unit sales percentage. So yeah, keep that in mind while looking at this graph. Nevertheless, it’s at least good knowing that the game keeps selling well on the PC. Well… at least when it comes to unit sales.

In similar news, CD Projekt RED has reported 521 million PLN in 2019 sales revenue. This is around 124 million US dollars. Moreover, this number is 44% higher than CD Projekt RED’s revenue in 2018.

  1. Makes a lot of sense, new consoles holiday this year and anyone buying for a current one probably is going 2nd hand

    1. 1st – This is not a webseries
2nd – If the show was what introduced me to The Witcher, i’ll never buy the game nor the books
3rd – It’s Netflix and that d*ckhead author of the books who should thank the games

  2. PC sales is what continuously funds CDPR, but after tasting the short term reveune from consoles, we’ll never see another PC focused games from them ever again.

They’ll all be built with consoles in mind first from here on out.

  3. Can’t be, everyone knows Denuvo is the only thing that sells games, right AAA trash publishers?

      1. But that’s ESPECIALLY from $ony peasants, Xbox fanboys (from what I’ve seen) in general are more friendly to PC because PC is also from Microsoft.

    1. They’re just salty because CDPR made them wait well over 6 months following the launch of The Witcher III for a patch which improved performance to a more stable 30fps from it having frequently run at 20fps courtesy of double-buffered v-sync. ?

A performance patch that, as documented by Digital Foundry, downgraded the game’s graphics on PS4. ?

    1. No, it’s a heavily SJWed and dumbed down shooter. PC sales will be less than RDR3 Epic store sales.

  4. It seems Xbox audience is very different from the from PC and PS4. Now it is clear why Microsoft makes only shooters.

  5. Having a pc and being able to mod your games is almost essential today. You have to fix every single game that is released. Just look at Resident Evil 3 Remake and Mount and Blade 2. You cannot even trust people to translate games correctly. Is it really surprising to hear that pc gaming is rising?

    1. Agreed. I even love the first 2 games and own all three of them. Been playing them since the The Witcher 1 came out years ago and own the special edition nowadays.

But,The Witcher 3 is the best of the trilogy and one of my favourite games of all time.

  6. Better not downgrade Cyberpunk 2077 because of consoles, you got no excuse now, PC has good sales

    1. Too late. The delay is specifically because of consoles. It’s being downgraded at this very moment

  7. And yet they dumbed it down for console/controller crowd. Dodge dodge hit, dodge dodge hit, repeat till the enemies die

    1. If you’re in a battle and is not immortal, than the process will always be the same, dodge then hit. Dunno what you’re complaining about.

        1. try a turn based rpg then. wait all that is is taking turns attacking each other. you might not like those either.

    2. While the combat is the weakest part of the game (you can be creative enough to have some variety at least) is miles above any western RPG combat out there…or you think Skyrim’s combat is good? not even mods can improve it.

      1. witcher 2’s combat feels and sounds vastly superior compared to 3. when you kill human npcs it really feels and sounds like you’re cutting men in armor down. compare that to witcher 3 which sounds like you’re cutting through paper.
the most boring, repetitive and visually unappealing combat system i’ve ever seen in a video game after dark souls.

        1. Gotta agree, i remember being more difficult too, with way more subsystems and complexity (for a console game). Still, felt a lot more janky than 3 (which is also janky, but an improvement in that feeling).
Witcher 2 was great, it had an identity mostly because of its artstyle…Witcher 3 being more mainstream looks and plays in a more generic way.

          1. if you watch early gameplay trailers, based on how geralt fights, you can tell that they weren’t going for this lock into nonsense combat system. they changed it for peasants and controller f4gs who adore dark soul’s awful combat system.

          1. When you’re a brat you tend to whine about things that doesn’t make sense.
            Like that.

          2. doesn’t make sense? do you lack brain capacity or do you get butthurt because someone disagrees with you? which one is it?

    1. PC gaming is dead to console gamers. They don’t have the motivation or in some cases the aptitude to learn about PC hardware to build their own rig or to learn about the hardware in prebuilts plus they are used to MS and Sony dictating to them what they may and may not have in terms of quality and performance. Console gamers are in their comfort-zone having MS and Sony make decisions for them such as when to upgrade by getting the latest generation console.

    1. This, even with the crappy tools and support from CDPR the great mods out there keep the game alive 5 years after release.

  8. Isn’t it funny how, when a developer makes a great game, players buy it in droves, and the developers don’t seem to be impacted by the supposedly rampant piracy on the PC platform?

Good games sell amazingly well on PC! Who could have known?

I hope this motivates CDPR to put even more emphasis on the PC market come CP2077.

      1. And? Are you suggesting that if they put more emphasis on PC, they should release a console version that can’t even run?

They’re a multiplatform studio. That’s never gonna change to going PC exclusive.

However, I just hope that if they had to modify the game (optimize, strip down, or otherwise) to get it running well on console, it didn’t affect the PC version (unless it’s an optimization that doesn’t impact fidelity).

    1. Yeah you’re right but imagine without piracy how many copies of this game CDPR would have sold…twice? triple? Who knows?

      1. Actually not much more. The thing about pirates is that 90% of them simply can’t afford the games they pirate.

So if it was impossible to pirate TW3, CDPR wouldn’t be getting much extra sales.

I’m fact, if TW3 was impossible to pirate, they probably would’ve gotten significantly less sales, since they would have had to include a very strong DRM for that to be possible. CDPR’s firm stance against DRM is one of their most attractive traits and they would lose a lot of their customers loyalty if they went that route.

  9. Make a complete great game sell for years. Other developers with not selling sh**ty games as service: Surprised Pikachu face. Then CDPR added free dlc, where other developers would ask 5 dollars a piece. And then CDPR Checkmated every other developer adding 2 Expansion size of the other developer games. Really hope they will keep the same standard with games. They showing customers that there is a better way. A beacon.

  10. Even in 2018, the PC sales was more than all of the console sales!???????????????
    So…did you do the math? 54% in 2018 man….and tied in 2017
