PC gaming feature 2

PC Gamers can now use their CPUs and GPUs via Folding@Home in order to fight against Coronavirus

As you may already know, WHO has declared the Coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. And while it will take a while until there is a vaccine, PC gamers can now use their PC systems in order to fight against this disease.

We usually don’t share this kind of news but let’s be honest here; this affects each and every one of us. A lot of countries are under quarantine as we speak. So yeah, this is the least we can do at this point.

All you have to do is download Folding@Home from here. Once you’ve installed it, you can setup a new identity and use this Team Number “237039” which puts priority to the Coronavirus. Below you can find the current Corona projects.

  • 11741: Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) receptor binding domain in complex with human receptor ACE2.
  • 11746: Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) receptor binding domain in complex with human receptor ACE2 (alternative structure to 11741).
  • 11742: Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) protease in complex with an inhibitor.
  • 11743: Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) protease – potential drug target.
  • 11744: Coronavirus SARS-CoV (SARS causing virus) receptor binding domain trapped by a SARS-CoV S230 antibody.
  • 11745: Coronavirus SARS-CoV (SARS causing virus) receptor binding domain mutated to the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) trapped by a SARS-CoV S230 antibody.

Lastly, stay safe everyone!

      1. Folding at Home simulates (using the distributed power of thousands of volunteer
consumer PC’s) the folding process of proteins which allows the program to find the “final form” of many folded proteins allowing researchers to figure out exactly which molecules to target when developing their drug/vaccine/medicine.

Applying Folding@Home to coronavirus is a phenomenal application of the tool that could have very real consequences in shortening the development time for a vaccine.

  1. Not to be nitpicky, but if they wanted to lot of people install it, they should put it as portable, not as installer

    1. that’s actually good. It means in the future we’ll have some state of the art digital human capabilities in UE4, which is free so… there should be a big jump especially for smaller studios who usually can’t afford to have high quality heads and animations and whatnot.

    1. Setup a new identity and use this Team Number “237039” which puts priority to the Coronavirus

    2. In I support research fighting dropdown menu chose “Any disease”. It will automatically go for covid-19. CPU goes for Project 14329.
GPU, at least for me doesn’t start. Had to go to Advanced Control in tray. Select GPU, pres few times on “0” near right next to “Project”, then on numbers next to work server and collection server. Go to Log tab and if it shows WU01:FS01:Download x.xx% then it’s all good. After it finishes downloading GPU folding will start.

  2. This thread predictably is full of tactless trash. Even one of the most impactful things gamers could ever hope to do to help the world still have this level of toxic trash. At least there are a few people with semi functioning consciousnesses.

    1. Lmao what did you expect here? The comments are always full of the same cynical, pessimistic “hot takes”. Not to mention the exceedingly low intelligence of some commenters here.

You just gotta try to inform and if that doesn’t work ignore.

  3. I cannot find any information about the Team. What is this about? Who set the team up and how did you choose Corona?

    1. Where did you look? Folding@Home’s webpage is one of the first results that pops up on google if you search their name. They have over 100 white-papers published regarding protein folding.

If you want more info, see my comments below with a link to a Reddit thread that explains everything.

    1. This Reddit thread includes a lot of sources and info regarding how exactly folding at home is useful: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/r93i6/has_foldinghome_really_accomplished_anything/

TL;DR – Folding at Home simulates (using the distributed power of thousands of volunteer
consumer PC’s) the folding process of proteins which allows the program to find the “final form” of many folded proteins allowing researchers to figure out exactly which molecules to target when developing their drug/vaccine/medicine.

      1. Installed it two days ago. It works as hard as a benchmark stress app. But you can tweak settings for your liking.

  4. Absolutely awesome to see this. Thanks for publishing this article John!

This has got to be one of the most effective uses of distributed computing and Folding@Home is the perfect tool for it.

For those of you unfamiliar with the tool, Folding at Home simulates (using the distributed power of thousands of volunteer
consumer PC’s) the folding process of proteins which allows the program to find the “final form” of many folded proteins allowing researchers to figure out exactly which molecules to target when developing their drug/vaccine/medicine.

This thread from a while back (almost all of the information in it is even more relevant today as the tool has progressed tremendously) on Reddit explains F@H’s impact very well: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/r93i6/has_foldinghome_really_accomplished_anything/

    1. Interesting read. Thanks for info. I may have heard about this program a while back but never really understood it. Makes a bit more sense now but I gotta look into it some more.

      1. No problem dude, and yeah it’s not the simplest topic and it does take a while to understand but it’s a phenomenal tool that we could all use to help out where we can.

        1. Yeah I’ve been using it for a few hours already and followed the instructions on here. I suppose it’s working, not sure how long I gotta keep it running. It says it has 8 days remaining I think but something tells me it has an endless cycle of whatever it’s doing.

I got a beefy rig with decent fans but oh man did my CPU get super hot from all that. I did put it on full load but I figured it’s for the best due to how bad things are getting with the virus. May end up toning it down if I’m unable to control the coolers.

  5. Am I the only one who’s getting slightly worrying vibes? Wouldn’t be shocked if such “algorithm application” gets infested with ghostly malware to leech off hardware info.

  6. All well and good but the cost of electricity in some parts of the world isn’t exactly on the cheaper side. There’s also a potential issue where some places might be rather warm/hot, so CPU’s or GPU’s generating additional heat from the increased workload could be a problem in such environments. On the other hand if you happen to live in a cold environment then you might want to make use of the heat that’s being output by your PC as a result of running Folding@Home.

  7. Hello John,

OFF TOPIC news…..Some UPDATE on the upcoming tech/gaming event…Computex coming in September

World’s biggest electronics expo has been officially rescheduled to September. The Coronavirus outbreak has already caused many important tech events such as GDC, GTC or even E3 to change its schedule or form. Computex is yet another event that has been affected.

The event is now planned for September 28th. This is the second time in history when Computex has been rescheduled, the previous change was due to SARS in 2003.
