CD Projekt RED has not been limited by the current-gen hardware for Cyberpunk 2077

In an interview with CGMagOnline, CD Projekt RED’s Maciej Pietras claimed that the team has not been limited at all by the current-gen hardware for Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk 2077 will be powered by Red Engine and Pietras said that CD Projekt RED is still upgrading it and finding new ways to use the new technical features that speed up the work.

You know we’re working on the Red Engine which we are still upgrading” said Pietras and continued:

“You know we are always finding new ways to use the new technical features that speed up the work and there are very low costs when it comes to the optimization part, and as I said, that we have a team of programmers who are dedicated to work on optimization. Simply because of that, I don’t think we ever reached that point and say something is too costly based on hardware requirements. That did not happen yet. What we showed in the demo was running in real runtime so there’s nothing there that we were trying to hide.”

Pietras also revealed that CD Projekt RED has been optimizing the game from the get-go. Normally, developers optimize their games after the end of their beta phase and a few months prior to their release. However, CD Projekt RED is doing things differently this time around.

“Actually from the top we knew we were developing the game for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.  And we started the process of optimization right at the start. So that’s probably what you see running the demo is a PC with like an i7 and 1080TI, so it’s not astronomical specs. Basically, because we are thinking from scratch about optimization, how streaming works, how to introduce global illumination for instance without overwhelming the PC or the GPU. Now we take those things into account right at the start and optimize for that.”

It will be interesting to see whether Cyberpunk 2077 will support any NVIDIA RTX features. For what it’s worth, CD Projekt RED claimed that it is still too early to say right now whether the game will support real-time ray tracing or DLSS.

        1. If it looks how it did when they showed it I will be surprised

Even with Witcher3’s down grades the game was fantastic, .

          1. Doesn’t matter. If they say “there was no downgrade” but there actually is i don’t care if it’s still beautiful, they just straight out lied. CDPR, i love them so i’ll wait for that product patiently and judge for myself once it comes out.

      1. Exactly. But what i saw doesn’t really make me think what they say is actually correct, i didn’t see anything particular that wouldn’t run on console either, a side from the graphical quality.

      1. what does a lying sack of shet company like cdprojecktred have anything to do with another sack of shet like EA?is your brain capacity this low?

    1. It looked OK which is why were the game to be downgraded from that demo they’d have no excuse really.

  1. Yeah, I don’t buy that interview. They still claim to this day that they didn’t downgrade Witcher 3, and even after all that they lauded console sales over PC, so I know where their allegiance lies these days.

  2. Well you cant say its an improvement over witcher 3 graphics, we get what we get and what consoles can deliver, pc has to follow for obvious contract issues from sony and xbox

    1. This is why I largely prefer PC exclusives that actually want to push boundaries, rather than being designed entirely around just what current gen systems can barely handle.

      1. Good point. But then again you get Star Citizen that’s trying to push even further and everybody is hating on it. I know it has alot to do with the business model but still SC (if it ever becomes GOLD) will be the biggest thing there is in 2095 lmao savage.

        1. That’s Roberts though, he’s always been a man that even managed to poorly handle his own movies, which shows us once again that he cannot handle a video game years later.
          ]
Not everyone would be exactly like him if they actually had a dream and wanted to execute it properly. he just can’t handle the doing it right part.

          1. I mean at this point with all the money SC got, the “board” could just hire a management team or whatever to sort things out :(.

  3. Every developer is limited by current gen hardware of any kind.

Every developer has higher aspirations for their games, than then-present technology allows.

  4. I’d like them to try DLSS so we can see real world difference. If Nvidia’s graphs are anything to go by (which i doubt, they’re boosted imo) it would really help those with 120hz+ monitors.

  5. Can’t wait to play Cyberpunk 2077!

I love these guys to bits, Witcher 3 is incredible and that Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay video was insane aka there is nothing like it! But I can’t believe they just said that and so far no one here has said anything, so weird. Usually most of you guys shred any game’s min and recommended requirements that John posts that are higher or = to a 970 or even lower.

“So that’s probably what you see running the demo is a PC with like an i7 and 1080TI, so it’s not astronomical specs” LOL, a 1080 Ti is like the second best consumer GPU you can get right now other than a 2080 Ti. What do they think are astronomical specs, maybe a Quadro RTX 8000?

Like I said I love these guys hard core and am a mega fan but those are astronomical specs LOL 🙂 . I guess when you are responsible for the Witcher series and are making Cyberpunk 2077 you have reached God status and you can say anything you want, so fair enough I not going to argue that.

Or am I taking crazy pills?

      1. LOL 🙂 . But seriously do you think an i7 and 1080TI setup is not considered astronomical specs or at least very high?

CD Projekt are the last guys I want to point the finger at(and that is not my point at all) but it is not really weird that someone would not consider a 1080 Ti as the top tier GPU(if they said 1060 then it make sense). I mean a 1080 Ti is only 1.22% on Steam hardware stats and still pretty expensive and very close to a 2080 Ti.

To me the different way of thinking per video game and company case is always odd to me with the internet/Humans.

At the end of the day all I really care is that I get to play Cyberpunk 2077 so I suppose none of this really matters maybe I am too soft or caring for other companies that get the tough treatment(suppose I should man up haha).

I already have a 1080 Ti 🙂 , so I am good to go ? either way and I am sure in the end Cyberpunk 2077 will be as well or even better optimized as The Witcher 3. I am not worried at all.

  6. The current-gen consoles are the weakest systems the game is going to support so BY DEFINITION they create the limits the engine team will fight the most. So the statement is pure PR hogwash as per usual.

“Normally, developers optimize their games after the end of their beta phase and a few months prior to their release. However, CD Projekt RED is doing things differently this time around.”

And this is also (based on) PR hogwash. The idea that developers just throw random unoptimized features at a wall until beta and THEN start optimizing is very wrong. When you program something you consider optimization right away, always. You will initially consider it a lower priority and put more emphasis on just getting a feature to work so it can be play-tested, as you’re still designing the core gameplay. But to say that optimization isn’t happening at all until a certain point during development is false and to suggest that that point is a few months before release, that’s downright absurd. Many “idea guy” features are never even prototyped because a programmer will know right away that this feature cannot work on the targeted hardware, without attempting it, without writing a line of code. That’s optimization at work. Then there’s the case of a feature being implemented in a scalable way where initially the programmer uses a high variable for something and discovers it chops up the framerate on a 3000 dollar work station. The programmer scales back that variable to make a version of the feature that doesn’t impede the flow of the game, so playtesters will have a fair impression of it. That’s optimization, too. Optimization happens every step of the way.

  7. putting on “they live” glasses:
“Listen up Goyim, we will not downgrade the game until we’ve secured enough pre-orders
after that, it will be business as usual”

  8. Clearly they will be developing a diff code for PC than for the consoles… it’s kind of sad so many here don’t even consider this. Too many bad experiences with other companies I guess…

    1. It’s all these armchair game devs in the comments. Sucks CDPR didn’t put in any additional effort in upgrading W3, it’s just downgraded, copy/paste W2… Free dlc and tons of optimization patches…pshhh those are for losers. Cyberpunk is not even real, it’s all a ploy.
      /s

I cannot wait to play this game.

  9. If the PC version maxed out doesn’t look far better the console version then they didn’t do all they could with the PC version.

  10. Really looking forward to this game but if it doesn’t turn out as good as I hope it will then it’s not the end of the world for me.

  11. Screw that RTX crap! Just make sure the game runs great without it first and only then maybe look into implementing it.

      1. Hopefully CDPR won’t focus their efforts on implementing them when they’re no more than a gimmick to sell you overpriced piece of plastic.

        1. Nothing gimmick about Ray Tracing, its a dream of every game dev.
Nothing is gimmick about DLSS, so far in games/demos that used,digital-foundry found that it actually looks better then Native 4K + TAA and that RTX 2080 runs faster in 4K/DLSS then 2080Ti in native 4K.
I understand that for people that for some people that Cant is very hard to see that people that Can get cool stuff, but its not a reason to be mean and think about running it for everyone, one day when RTX gets mainstream, maybe in next gen of the one after you’ll be bale to afford it.
But DLSS is a blessing for everyone, when it gets down to lower end cards especially, but even right now its easy to assume that RTX2070 will be able to do 4K/DLSS at 60fps, something that isnt yet a possibility for any xx70 type of cards.
Next gen maybe even xx60 will be able to do DLSS/4K 60fps

          1. Keep dreaming, dude. nVidia will continue pushing out marginally better GPUs for the next 5 to 10 years with ever increasing price tag. In its current state ray tracing is just a fancy feature (but more of a buzz word/phrase) so that idiots like you can justify spending $1200 for it.

If it’ll be present in CP2077, whatever and it halves the framerate on your 2080Ti that’s OK by me but 95% of the gamers would be just fine with it turned off and the game running smoothly.

  12. One Word: “BLIND”. They are Blind AF. Just look at the Clothes in the game and that alone will tell you just hire detailed this game. The doctor that V saw, just look at his Jacket.

  13. “with like an i7 and 1080TI, so it’s not astronomical specs” wtf is an astronomical specs then? future RTX or GTX 3080Ti?

  14. “So that’s probably what you see running the demo is a PC with like an i7 and 1080TI, so it’s not astronomical specs.”
Back when the demo came out the 1080Ti was the TOP gaming GPU, before 2080Ti was out, even today its holds second place with RTX2080 going head in head in DX11 games.
If he makes this for consoles then he also makes it for OG Xbox One which is pure antiquated trash.BUT even the Xbox one X and PS4Pro are PURE TRASH compared to 8700K and 1080Ti.
So i really dont understand this person, or maybe he thinks there are people making games for Intels x299 platform? 10-20 core CPUs and Quad Quadros [the ones with 16Gb of BM2]

  15. You replied 3 times to my only reply, i mean are you genuinely retrded or? Where exactly did you see that you can interact with “nearly everything” I saw the 48 mins gameplay, and there’s no “nearly everything” there just some things you can interact with, stuff that weigh down CPU performance are physics too, and i didn’t see nothing that spectacular about that too, besides, do you realize that current gen console don’t have a capable enough CPU to handle that? So what do you think they’ll do? Remove 3/4 of the npcs and remove physics in addition to tone down graphic details? Are you that naive and ignorant?
