And it appears that Intel has dropped the ball. A couple of days ago, we informed you about the full specs of the new upcoming Intel Coffee Lake i7 & i5 CPUs. These new processors will be using the LGA1151 socket, however it appears that they won’t be compatible with the LGA1151 motherboards that are currently available.
This information comes from an AIB partner who confirmed that the Coffee Lake CPUs will require new motherboards. It seems that Intel will force PC users to also upgrade their motherboards for these brand new CPUs. And that’s a shame because the Coffee Lake CPUs seem really close – architecture wise – to the Skylake CPUs. Not only that, but we are pretty sure that a lot of Skylake owners won’t jump to these new CPUs in case they require a new motherboard.
Intel has not officially announced yet whether the Coffee Lake CPUs will require new motherboards, however the writing is on the wall. We’ll be sure to keep you posted, so stay tuned for more!

so this isn’t remotely surprising news if true.

Even more greediness. At this rate i’ll buy amd just because i’m pissed at intel.
Who am i kiddin i’ll buy intel anyways. Still, i don’t like what they’re doing.
😀
f*** it, I’m going full Ryzen for my next build. using intel form the start but now time to leave it
Same here.
Well, of course. New sockets are needed almost every time a new lineup launches. This isn’t at all surprising.
This is what Intel want you think: a new socket is needed for new features whereas in reality there’s nothing new.
Odd that AM4 has support until 2020
AM4 is a brand new Mobo. It’s probably future proofed. I haven’t heard anything about this new Intel Mobo, so it might be future proofed as well.
Intel has never future proofed anything.
8c/16 Ryzen and 8c/16t threadripper say high.
Even all the cache is exactly the same since it is exactly the same cpu but already on a different socket.
It has a few dead/fake dies on it to make it fit on the thread rippers format.
The Threadripper socket needs 4094 pins, AM4 only has 1331. It’s understandable that a CPU which can double the core/thread count uses a new socket, as it’ll surely need those extra contacts.
Threadripper and TR4 are huge actually.
Uhm yeah. Do your research. Go ask on the AMD forum and direct your question to AMD staff and find out. Dummy dies to make it fit.
The CPU is 100% the same as the consumer Ryzens. You dont need that socket for the 8c/16t. The rest of the differences are on the mobo’s chipset.
Not all. Threadripper has 64 PCIe lanes, while Ryzen has 32 lanes, reduced to 24.
Though I feel the best perk you get with threadripper is the quad channel DDR4.
Which is supported in the chipset.
