Original Xbox emulation may officially come to the PC

The original Xbox is a platform that was never successfully emulated on the PC. However, we may see an official emulation solution from Microsoft as Xbox’s chief Phil Spencer claimed that he’d love to see the original Xbox game being emulated on the PC.

As Phil Spencer told PCGamer:

“I want people to be able to play games! [Emulation] is hard. [Xbox] 360 specifically is a PowerPC chip, emulated to x86, which is difficult. It’s a little bit easier when you have a fixed spec, when you think about Xbox, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X. And you think of the variable specs of the PC space, so you’re taking a fixed-spec PowerPC emulator and then moving it over to run on PC, so there’s a lot of work there.

The original Xbox, OG Xbox, is a little bit easier, because that was an x86 chip it was running on. Obviously when we think about UWP and the ability for games to run across console and PC, we’re getting closer. I want developers to be able to build portable applications, which is why we’ve been focusing on UWP for games and even apps that want to run on multiple devices.

So I think we’ve got work to go do there, but I think it’s in our future.”

So from the looks of it, this emulation solution/software will be exclusive to the Windows Store as it will be an UWP application. And obviously it won’t be released tomorrow. Still, an official emulator from Microsoft itself would be an incredible thing.

For what it’s worth, there are currently only two active emulators for the original Xbox; Cxbx-Reloaded and XQEMU. Cxbx-Reloaded is in the early stages right now and most games will either crash or do nothing. On the other hand, XQEMU is also at a very early stage but can run a lot of games. However, XQEMU is low-level, accuracy-focused, and there hasn’t been much focus on speed, so games are very slow on it currently.

  1. Eh, how many great games are we really missing out on from that console? Most of the great ones came to PC anyways.

    -KOTOR 1 & 2
    -Chronicles of Riddick
    -Halo 1 & 2
    -Jade Empire
    -Fable
    -Star Wars Republic Commando
-Splinter Cell 1-3 (though Pandora Tomorrow isn’t available digitally)

    1. There are still a few games that haven’t made it to PC that I still wanna go back and play (or try), but it probably will be a lot of effort for rather little pay off.

    2. Predator: Concrete jungle and even that AvP RTS would be nice to revisit. Realistically they weren’t quite as popular as those you listed.

    3. I can’t think of many. Vanquish and Bayonetta were two of the only console exclusives I wanted and they’re on PC now. Maybe Red Dead Redemption?

      1. Wrong Xbox 😛

But yeah, off the top of my head; RDR, Halo, & then it’s just the PlayStation IPs, basically (for me, anyway); God of War, Killzone, Resistance, Demon’s Souls & Bloodborne, Shadow of the Colossus & Ico, Metal Gear (series), Clover Studio (Viewtiful Joe, Okami, God Hand), The Last Guardian, Devil May Cry 1-3 etc.

(Yeah, DMC3 has been ported, but the port is sh*t, so I’m not counting it)

        1. i think most of the IPs you listed can be played on PC and can be completed. demon souls runs good on ps3 emulator now. most of nintendo games runs extremly well too and ps2 emulation is not bad.

          1. Yeah & CEMU does great Wii emulation, which covers the Nintardo IPs, but in the end it’s still the same old console release running through emulation at whatever sh*tty resolution & framerate the developers had to hardlock the game at because of the sh*tty console hardware, which means in the end, it’s still a second rate experience compared to a proper PC port.

I mean yeah, I’ve still got a working PS2, PS3, & Wii, but in the end it’s just not the same thing as being able to play those games native on the PC, sadly.

    4. Alot of niche games were pretty good and are now forgotten. Microsoft was buying up studios in those days to win the console wars and alot of weird games were released. Some of them were pretty good but alot weren’t.

Also Ninja Gaiden, very good action game.

      1. Ninja Gaiden is great, but there’s already a better version for PS3 in Ninja Gaiden Sigma. We’ve got a better chance with RPCS3 than this crap.

    5. Jet Set Radio Future, Serious Sam Xbox (I know it’s on PC, but the Xbox has some features that I like), Ninja Gaiden, DOA 3 and 4, Soul Calibur 1 and 2, Project Gotham Racing 1,2 and 3 just to name a few.

      1. A few games have a contract on music and i don´t hope see JSRF ever, because microsoft $ucks!

  2. Yay? So, I get to play Halo: Combat Evolved & Halo 2 on an emulator, now?

    …… Yay?

Oh, wait, it’s a UWP thing, nevermind.

    /Care.

    1. All MS games will be UWP – #deal with it

      – Forza Motorsport 7
      – Forza Horizon 3 (now 50% sale)
      – ORI Blind Forest 2
      – Gears 4
      – and all others

          1. None of those have been cracked by CPY. Or any other pirate. Weep.

          2. There’s something called In Due Time, mister!

            Besides:

            “CRACKED UWP GAMES
            Name Released Cracked By
Gears of War UE 2016-03-01 Bypassed
Quantum Break 2016-04-05 2016-09-29 Bypassed by Disyer, cracked by SKIDROW
Forza Horizon 3 2016-09-27 Bypassed by Opusdev”

Oh I’m sorry! Did I break your concentration?

          3. I’m sorry I’m not going to f’up my OS by bypassing sh*t. Also Quantum Break is cracked because it is on Steam.

      1. Ori blind Forest 2 will come to Steam as the first. The developers are not stupid by ignoring the most profitable platform on Pc.

        1. He thinks Ori is owned by Microsoft, so they won’t let it. I’ve personally failed to find definitive proof of that, but regardless, time will tell.

      2. Your #hit with the deal with it, i will stay on W7 untill i get CXBX Emulator. #uck you and microlost too. Just forcing people for the greatest spyware windows evar!!!!

  3. Spancer is full of $hit
we were promised fable 2, halo 3 and many others
    but nothing happend
PC for microsoft is not working because their Win store is unpopular and worthless to gamers

i hope microsoft realizes they have a lot of potential re-selling a bunch of old games, but as we all know.. Microsoft is Microdumb

  4. Microsoft will integrate Windows and Xbox into one platform to combat Steam. I don’t think they can do it because their PC gaming initiatives are still just beyond incompetent.

MS is like a guy with one wooden leg and the other leg is gimpy trying to race against Usain Bolt. They can compete but they’ve got an uphill battle to fight.

    1. I laugh later if Gabe forces microsoft to post HD games on steam like voodoovince as been released. Everyone forgot that game? Not me. go check steam.

  5. This basically renders all original Xbox exclusive titles into timed exclusives… LOL!

Hope the guys developing Xenia can dig around in the code and maybe find something useful, who knows.

  6. “when we think about UWP”
Please stop thinking about that, Spencer.

“I want developers to be able to build portable applications, which is why we’ve been focusing on UWP for games and even apps that want to run on multiple devices”
In other words, Microsoft are playing catchup in wanting to be like Apple with its App Store.

  7. Cool. I have a modded Xbox with a 200 GB IDE Drive that I got as a gift. But still, this is aweso… wait, what’s that? UWP… Oh… Oh no.

  8. Jut put the UWP in your a$$. I wont get out of windows 7 because you want people to be forced on windows 10. Waiting for CXBX. Go s#k a d#ck spencer shop!
