Unicorn Overlord feature

The canceled Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu, runs Unicorn Overlord with 60fps

Unicorn Overlord is a new tactical RPG that just came out on Nintendo Switch. And even though the big “N” has shut down Yusu, this canceled Nintendo Switch emulator can run this game with 60fps on PC.

YouTube’s ‘reznoire’ posted a video featuring more than 7 minutes of gameplay from it. And, as we can see, the game is playable on Yuzu. There don’t seem to be any major visual or graphical issues. Plus, the performance looks really good.

To capture this gameplay footage, reznoire used an Intel Core i9-14900K with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and 48GB of RAM. It’s a pretty high-end PC system. The good news though is that reznoire has included the MSI Afterburner/Rivatunner overlay in the video. And, as we can see, the RTX4090 was used at around 60%.

This isn’t the first time we see a Nintendo Switch game running this well on emulators on launch day. Red Dead RedemptionBayonetta 3Monster Hunter RiseXenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, and Pikmin 4 were all playable on PC the moment they came out. Not only that but some games were playable on the Nintendo Switch emulators, even before their official release date. Such examples are Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Super Mario Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This shows how ahead of the curve these emulators were. And this is another reason why Nintendo wanted to shut Yuzu down.

As we’ve reported, Nintendo has shut down Yuzu, so you can’t download it legally from the Internet. But there are two other Nintendo Switch emulators going around called Suyu and Nuzu. Since they’re based on Yuzu, they should be able to play Unicorn Overlord too. I’ve just checked and the Github page for Suyu is still available. However, the team behind Nuzu has removed it. So, right now, you can download Suyu. That, or you can try Ryujinx.

In terms of tech and graphics, Unicorn Overlord is a somewhat “simple” game. Don’t get me wrong, it has an amazing art style and it looks great. However, it’s not as demanding as the latest Zelda games. As such, even Ryujinx should be able to run it with 60fps.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. Far bigger loss of YUZU going under is emulation on Android devices. That’s what bothered Nintendo. That a bunch of handhelds were suddenly becoming better Switch consoles than the Switch itself.

      1. Yes, younger audiences love using emulators on phones. Get a controller and you have a beast of a handheld console

    1. While Android devices are certainly getting more powerful each year, they are still nowhere close to the performance of PC handhelds such as the Steam Deck.

That is a far bigger threat to Nintendo’s hybrid handheld consoles model.

      To give you an idea:

I’ve heard from someone with access to a Switch 2 development kit that it is only able to match & sometimes surpass the Steam Deck (with its current far from optimized SteamOS 3.5 version) when making use of optimized code-paths with “NVN2”, which is the low-level graphics API of the Switch 2 made in collaboration with NVIDIA.

I can guarantee you that the Steam Deck 2 is going to blow it out of the water…

    2. That’s a really good point, I don’t game on my phone and wasn’t aware there was an android app for yuzu if that’s what you mean. Huge threat to the switch mobile handheld angle. Even steam deck and others w emulators would eliminate the need to buy a closed walled system like the switch. I see young kids just used to gaming on a phone only or tablet and many people now don’t even have computers just really nice phones maybe a cheap tablet or modern netbook for basic internet/word proc etc
PS yuzu apk still on apkpure, uptodown etc among other emulators. archiveorg is your friend btw

    3. Far bigger loss of YUZU going under is emulation on Android devices.

Why? It’s Android, just run an APK.

I don’t see an issue unless you’re irrationally paranoid over not running content from Google Play Store. If this is the case then it’s entirely a YOU problem. Do a virus scan, muppet.

  2. Ryujinx has consistently run better for me in most games tbh but I don’t emu switch too often or any emu really. Wonder was too simple and annoying in some levels to last too long, really it was RDR1 w the dlc included that was the biggest draw there. Runs axx 35fps same cpu/gpu usage as rdr2 or more usage, the other emus aren’t much better either. TOTK once you played enough and built a shader cache was 60 w dips, much better than botw imo Tards at nintendont release that on PC they make even more but they undercut their own hardware. Switch is a lot worse than mid or top level phones now though, so other than the built in controller there’s not much appeal there for the prosumer type. Gotta be some controller that can wrap around your phone right? add joysticks and buttons on the side.

  3. Considering Nintendo has isolated themselves on out of date hardware that’s at least 4+ generations behind anything on PC as well as PS5 and Series X, it’s not surprising.

  4. obviously like your website but you need to test the spelling on quite a few of your posts Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very troublesome to inform the reality on the other hand Ill certainly come back again
