A couple of days ago, Microsoft announced a new remaster of its first Gears of War game, Gears of War Reloaded. This is the second remaster of GoW, as in August 2015, we got the Ultimate Edition. So, how does Reloaded compare to Ultimate Edition, and is it a meaningful upgrade?
YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ has shared an early graphics comparison between these two versions. As such, we get to see the visual tweaks and enhancements that will be featured in Reloaded. And, to be honest, I’m a bit disappointed with this remaster.
Gears of War: Reloaded seems to use the same 3D models as the Ultimate Edition. The devs didn’t update them. Because of this, the game’s environments can look blocky, and the characters might not look as good as expected.
The only meaningful visual change is the 4K textures. As far as I can tell, the lighting also looks similar to the Ultimate Edition. That’s not a bad thing. However, I was expecting something more than a 4K asset enhancement.
Perhaps the best thing about GoW: Reloaded is its PC features and QoL improvements. For instance, the PC version will have support for ultrawide monitors and variable refresh rates. It will also come with a benchmark mode. Plus, there will be support for NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 and AMD FSR 3.1 from the get-go.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition used Unreal Engine 3 and had a lot of problems on PC when it first came out. One big issue was stuttering when moving around. So, the big question now is this. Will Gears of War: Reloaded have the same problems? If nothing has been improved behind the scenes, many PC players might not care about it.
Gears of War: Reloaded feels like it was made mainly for newer consoles, and that makes sense. But for PC players, it just seems like a slightly better version of the Ultimate Edition. Since that version came out 10 years ago, this one doesn’t feel very exciting or new. It’s kind of disappointing. If you’re a big Gears of War fan, try not to expect too much. This isn’t a big remaster like what we saw with Oblivion.
Microsoft will release Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26th.

I didn't noticed stutters when i played Ultimate Edition, maybe people where trying to push the game to 4k or something. In any case, this is just a rehash for the Playstation crowd, you have to be r3tarded to care about this, unless it comes as a free upgrade. The better games from this series still lingers in emulation limbo.
Unless you played it at 30 fps the game still has stutters and slowdowns to this day, the only way to get rid of them is to set Shadows to Low quality which removes any form of dynamic shadows in the game even your character's shadow making the game look incredibly flat.
The best way to get a smooth experience is to limit the game to 30 fps and use Lossless Scaling FG in windowed mode, it doesn't work on fullscreen even though it's a DX12 game meaning that fullscreen is just a disguised borderless windowed mode, i don't get why
Anyway it needed an update and here it is, i heard the upgrade is free for the owners but since it's MS Store exclusive, you'll get a free a copy for the MS Store which is disappointing.
I’m not going to play again to find out if i’m wrong re: peformance issues and it’s not like i have the same hardware i had when i played this game so let’s leave it at that.
I can also confirm that the stuttering is insanely bad. There's no rhyme or reason to it. The h*mo devs are aware of this problem and they never bothered to fix it.
I just want it to run good without issues. It already looks gorgeous. The original version has bugs with modern gpus and cpus and is very grey, colorless. I think they've fixed it this time.
The original doesn't have any issues on modern hardware except for the GFWL thing that can be easily bypassed, some flickering issues on AMD CPUs can be fixed by replacing a single DLL, you'll find it on PCGamingWiki.
As for the color issues, just set post-process quality to Low it will get rid of Motion Blur, Depth of Field and Color Grading, the image will be a lot cleaner, perhaps a little bit dull but nothing that Reshade can't correct.
There is a mod on moddb that is a standalone multiplayer with bots, and a release in archive dot org with the horde mod.
Yeah, I know about that. I even tested it when it was first shared before pcgw. It's great but issue is still present on Intel cpus. But I still think this reloaded remaster is significant improvement and controls will be much better. I'll give it a try.

I think part of the reason they remade it in this case is the fact that the first remaster they did was such a mess (and stuck in a UWP format) that when they started their plans to bring it to PS5, and maybe switch, they realized it would probably be easier to start from scratch again.
Another reason a lot of these companies do remakes is apparently because whenever they bring on new teams or new employees they don't want them screwing up and delaying new projects they might be working on so they basically give them their old toolbox and say "hey, make something out of this".

I'll be happy if the damn thing finally properly works. After a Windows Update, the Microsoft Store version basically got it's FPS borked. It would randomly drop to 30 depending on where you were looking at, and no fiddling with the settings or configuration files would fix it.
At least maybe this time, this version will properly work like the Ultimate Edition should have. I personally wasn't expecting it to look better than the original Ultimate Edition. Only to at least finally have a proper working version, because Microsoft basically abandoned the Ultimate Edition on MS Store.
The Gears of War community been asking for a Remake of Gears of War 2 and 3, ever since they released the Ultimate Edition.
What does Microsoft do? They re-release the Ultimate Edition.

pretty cool. i was trying to play the previous release on gog sometime ago but got annoyed by it missing some modernized features. I checked this out on gamepass and it runs so much better but still misses stuff like a framerate limit or upscaling options. I ran through the first act and was pretty cool. now i'd love a dx12 or vulkan update to the metro games.

I do have the gears remaster on the list to check out later this year. I had only played gears 3 on xbox 360 because more of my friends played halo and the rest of the series I always heard less than great things about.
