And the moment has finally come. Modder ‘xoxor4d ‘ has just released the first public version of his Path Tracing RTX Remix Mod for Grand Theft Auto 4. This mod will add real-time Path Tracing to this classic GTA game. As such, it’s a must for everyone who wants to replay it.
What’s also cool here is that this Path Tracing Mod is also compatible with the Fusion Fix Mod. For those who did not know, Fusion Fix is a comprehensive open-source mod that aims to fix a wide range of technical issues, bugs, and limitations in the game that were left unaddressed in official updates. So, PC gamers can now combine them and get the ultimate GTA 4 experience.
You can go ahead and download the RTX Remix Mod from this link. Once your download is complete, you can install the mod via this guide. Don’t worry, it’s relatively simple.
Install using the installer:
- Download
GTAIV-Remix-CompatibilityMod-1.0.0.zip- Download
GTAIV-Remix-CompMod-Installer.exe- Place both files in the same folder and run
GTAIV-Remix-CompMod-Installer.exe- Use the File Dialog to select your
GTAIV.exewhich is located in your GTAIV install folder- The installer will ask if you want to install a custom Fork of FusionFix
If you already have FusionFix installed, it’s definitely recommended to install this because the original, unmodified version has a few incompatibilities with RTX Remix. If you do not have FusionFix installed, you are free to choose. It’s not a requirement.- Make sure that you remove all custom launch arguments for GTAIV in Steam (if you have any set)
Install manually:
- Download
GTAIV-Remix-CompatibilityMod-1.0.0.zip- Open the zip and extract all files contained inside the
GTAIV-Remix-CompatibilityModfolder into your GTAIV directory (next to theGTAIV.exe). Overwrite all when prompted.- If you want to use FusionFix of already have it installed, it’s definitely recommended to install my custom fork of FusionFix because the original, unmodified version has a few incompatibilities with RTX Remix.
You can find the files inside_installer_options/FusionFix_RTXRemixFork. Extract theplugins&updateinto your GTAIV directory and override any existing files.
Now, in case you notice heavy stuttering, you should launch the game with the included _LaunchWithProcessorAffinity_2Cores_GTA4.bat. Doing this will assign 2 cores to GTA4 and the rest to Remix.
The modder also recommends adjusting distance and quality sliders in the GTA4 graphic options. Higher values will bring CPU bottlenecks. So, try 50 for view distance and 30 for quality and adjust from there.
Since this is the first public release, you may encounter some bugs and glitches. Also, since this is Path Tracing we’re talking about, you’ll need a high-end GPU. My guess is that the mod also supports DLSS 4 (presumably with Multi-Frame Gen). So, make sure to use MFG to boost your performance.
These past few months, we’ve shared a lot of RTX Remix Mods. So, you can find mods for Black Mesa, Star Wars Republic Commando, NFS: Underground, and Manhunt. You can also find some for BioShock, Morrowind, NFS: Underground 2, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, Max Payne, Unreal, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
In January 2024, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Then, in February 2024, we shared videos for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, and Midnight Club 2. Be sure to also check out some early RTX Remix videos and screenshots for Fallout: New Vegas, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, COD 2, and Half-Life.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for Painkiller and Left 4 Dead 2. Oh, and don’t forget to try this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Lastly, you can download these amazing Path Tracing Mods for Doom, Doom 2, Quake, and Serious Sam.
Have fun!
