Super Mario Odyssey is fully playable, from start to finish, on the Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu

A few days ago, we informed you about some major emulation improvements for Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu. And today, we are happy to report that this triple-A Switch exclusive title is fully playable, from start to finish, on its latest version.

It’s seriously incredible what the Yuzu team has managed to achieve here as Yuzu has been under development for less than a year. Now there are still some minor graphical glitches and there is a performance hit in some areas but overall the game can be finished without major issues.

This is a huge milestone for the Yuzu team though it remains to be seen whether other Nintendo Switch triple-A games will run as good as Super Mario Odyssey does. The team also needs to further improve performance in this latest Super Mario game and fix some minor graphical bugs. However, I seriously didn’t expect Super Mario Odyssey to be fully playable this year.

Those interested in testing this Nintendo Switch emulator can do so by downloading the latest version of Yuzu from here.

Have fun everyone!

  1. Amazing. They’re able to emulate the equivalent of an upper tier smartphone.

Let me know when emulators are emulating true current gen hardware, such as whatever Sony and Microsoft release next. Heck, I’d settle for a PS4/XOne emulator, which should be far easier to pull of, given the similarities to PC architecture this gen.

This is to say nothing of the legalities behind Yuzu, as it’s closed source and there is much speculation that they are using official SDK libraries.

A cool emulator to have out in the wild, but really, hardly earth shattering accomplishments made here.

    1. Why on Earth should we emulate the games on these platforms when they are already released for PC as well?!?! 95% of the MS and PS games games are released for PC as well while the games on Switch or Wii U etc are not so gamers find emulators for these platforms far more interesting! Also “upper tier smartphone” is kind of silly..

      1. They should be emulated if only to play the few exclusives they had, and in some cases allowing Windows 7 and 8 users a chance to play Win10 exclusive microsoft games lmao

    2. “…but really, hardly earth shattering accomplishments made here.”

That was my exact reaction when Nintendo first revealed the Switch console.

    3. It’s not about how powerful the machine is, it’s about how much development has been done on the emulator. Nintendo stuff always gets more devs interested because Ninty make-a the good games, which is why the Switch is almost emulated and the original Xbox still doesn’t have a usable emulator.

Also, IIRC Yuzu is based on a lot of the work done for Citra, the 3DS emulator.

  2. This Yuzu is really giving Nintendo a run for their money. One day Nintendo will start getting ports of Yuzu games.

      1. You’re the kind of gamer that will use his Nintendo to download illegal ROMs of Yuzu games like the PC version of Super Mario Odyssey. You pirates sicken me.

          1. You’re being trolled as a punishment for not understanding the first comment’s reference. Search for “Nintendo uses roms” to understand the true beauty of the first comment.

    1. Why wait for an emulator if we can soon play NATIVELY the best version of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PC in 4K and 60 fps and with graphics still improved, impossible thing in the consoles

    2. Why wait for an emulator if we can soon play NATIVELY the best version of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PC in 4K and 60 fps, and with graphics still improved, impossible thing in the consoles!!!

Search on google for this to know the truth!!!
Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App Files Hint at PC Version.
      and

What are the chances of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to PC?

      1. “Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App Files Hint at PC Version”

That configuration file also include settings for jet aircrafts… are you sure that there will be jet aircrafts in Red Dead Redemption?

If you really want RDR2 in native 4K (together with RDR1 in native 4K) you should buy Xbox One X. This console currently cost 399 on Amazon bundled with RDR2, Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Motorsport 7 (all Xbox bundles are 100 cheaper when you buy them with RDR2)

        1. It’s really crazy how they can NOT release this game on PC where there are so many DRM options and lootboxes they can cram in this game

        2. RockStar see’s all the money they made milking out Console only peons with GTA V. They see all the money to be made by delaying the PC version of RDR2 😀

          1. If MS and Sony paid rockstar for console exlusives rights, then Rockstar will probably still make more money than PC version would anyway. Let’s hope RDR2 will be ported to PC eventually but right now nothing is certain.

        3. While it is true that it is only on console right now, Rockstar’s board sees the shyteload of money made on PC with GTAV and they’re going to pass ? PC players wanted to play RDR1 on pc and couldn’t get it. Now R* can make so much money for their investors with RDR2 on pc. I for 1 will buy it and many of my friends will do the same.

If they don’t bring it to pc, they’re clueless

    3. “You will need a lot faster hardware to emulate [insert game here] on PC”

That’s what console fanboys say every generation, including the last, and look at where those emulators are now…

It isn’t even an argument, really. Pretty much all console exclusives eventually become playable via emulators. Also, realize that no gamer is limited to their preferred platform. That’s why it’s called a preferred platform. A PC user can just go out a buy a PS4/XONE/NS to play exclusives if they want, in the same way that console users could just get a PC (most people have PCs nowadays anyway).

Although tbf, I don’t blame you for your reply. Emulators don’t ‘kill’ consoles at all. Might they convince people to get a PC instead? Sure, but Sony/MS/Nintendo aren’t being sent reeling because people can play console exclusives on PC. In fact, most people that use emulators wouldn’t have bought the consoles anyway. They just pirate the games, or buy the games without the console in order to say they aren’t pirates.

      1. Guys like him do not remember or know about old emulation programs back in the late 90’s like mame / snes98 😀

      2. “That’s what console fanboys say every generation, including the last, and look at where those emulators are now…”

PC emulators are still too slow to emulate Xbox 360 from 2005… Its was released 13 years ago. Only working 360 emulator is available on Xbox One. PC emulators still are few years behind because of bad performance.

How many years you will be waiting for emulators of Xbox One X and games like Red Dead Redemption 2? In 2020/21 we will have next generation… and in 2024 another power refresh. New consoles will be released every 3-4 years always with top possible power for 500 usd. This is not old times when consoles was released every 6-8 years. Now console world move much faster… every 3-4 years

        1. You do realize that the performance issues aren’t because PCs are too slow, but because the emulators aren’t optimized well enough yet? Some PS3 games are playable in 4k and modded to 60 FPS, yet some that aren’t demanding at all can hardly run at native at 30 FPS. It isn’t a matter of power, it’s a matter of coding. For this current gen, yes, we’d need a few more generations to fully emulate it, but that’s a given.

I don’t understand why console kids constantly try to pretend consoles are better. THEY’RE NOT. There is no debate. It’s fact. There’s a reason PCs are more expensive. Do you really think a $400 box is going to beat a $2,000 beast? No. That’s like thinking a Honda Civic can outrun an F1 racer. Obviously not. One is more expensive, and created for pure performance.

Could consoles compete with PC? Yeah, but only if they shot up the costs, which would be a stupid move since everyone would just get a PC for the same price instead.

I don’t even know why I bother though. Anyone stupid enough to believe consoles are better than PCs is stupid enough to not be able to handle a simple discussion.

PCs are, and will forever be more powerful and more versatile than consoles. Period. Exclusive games will not change that, and those are simply exclusion decisions made by developers/publishers. Go cry about it on a console forum echo chamber.

      3. “”and look at where those emulators are now…””

PS3 and xbox 360 emulators are far from good, not to mention even PS2 emu is still not perfect. In hardware mode some graphics effects arnt rendered at all (in God of War 2 for example there are missing character shadows, bloom, postprocessing filters, fog). PS2 emu can render all missing effects only in software mode, but then performance is bad even on the fastest i7, not to mention games will run only at their native resolution. On top of that thumbstick sensitivity is not emulated correctly.

It will take a long time until you will see perfectly working PS4 or xbox one emulator (we will have to wait 10-20 years probably).

        1. No emulator is perfect, but with time they get better and better. How well can the PS4 emulate the PS3? Oh wait, it can’t at all, that’s why backwards compatibility is completely non-existent on it, even for PS1 and PS2 games. Again, like I said, is that your only argument? A handful of exclusives? Console kiddies can’t ever come up with anything more than “bu-bu-bu- we can play these couple games and you can’t!”

Yeah, because I can’t just go and buy a console, right? Jesus Christ, you guys will find any excuse to try and pretend consoles are better than PCs.

          1. I have never said consoles are better, in fact every game ported to PC run better and looks better at the same time. But still consoles are a must if you really want to play exlusive games. In 2018 I bought PS4P and xbox X for myself and I dont regreat it because since then I have played around 30 amazing games I would not played on PC anyway.

            “No emulator is perfect”
Xbox classic and x360 emulation on xbox one x is perfect. There are no glitches, performance is always better and some games run in 9x higher resolution.

          2. It isn’t perfect though. If it were, then every single Xbox and X360 game in existence would be able to run on it exactly the same way the original consoles could run it. That doesn’t happen, because MS themselves have to work on the specific games to iron out any bugs and glitches they might find.

It’s the exact same way that some PC emulators can play one game perfectly, while another game on the same emulator might be mostly broken, or not even boot. Also, of course MS is going to do a better job at emulating their own console, they have all the documentation on it; they created it.

Obviously some emulators are going to progress more slowly than others, but the point I’m trying to make is that eventually, pretty much every console will be emulated. Tbh I think the only console that might not end up emulated is the PS Vita, since nobody really cared much about it…

          3. I didn’t say it couldn’t emulate them, I said there’s no backwards compatibility. You can’t just put in your PS1/PS2 discs and play them, you have to buy them again from the PSN store in order to play them, and not every single game is even on there. Even on a jailbroken PS4, you can’t just insert discs and play them, and you still need to patch/recompile them in order to get the PS4 to actually play them.

I do agree with your second point though. It’s very obvious that Sony simply doesn’t want people to have backwards compatibility, because they want everyone to buy their games again digitally. To be honest, this to me is the absolute worst point of consoles; the total control the companies have over them. Of course you can hack consoles (when one becomes available, and you’re on the proper versions), but you really shouldn’t have to (and you risk going online when you do as well). They should just not do complete sh*t practices in the first place, but we all know that’s not going to stop.

Versatility and freedom are the main reasons why I switched to PC, and it’s something that consoles desperately need a lot more of.

          4. Backwards compatibility may not exclude emulation or pure software, but when it comes to consoles, it is mainly based on physical compatibility. A Switch being able to digitally play NES games doesn’t make it backwards compatible with the NES, since you obviously can’t put physical NES cartridges into it. The games must be purely emulated, and emulation alone does not equal true backwards compatibility.

        2. Dont compare power pc console with x86 jaguar cpus ^^ , and who needs a x box one emulator.. for what 2 games?

    4. So you’re still spreading that fake news screenshot comparison even though you know it’s not an honest comparison. How low will you go in your desperate efforts to promote ‘your’ beloved Microsoft? Pitiful.

  3. One of the best games I have played when it comes to single player end game content. I have owned the game on Switch since it came out. But Nintendo could make so much more money if they would just make PC versions of their games.

  4. You know, ignoring the fact that a lack emulation qualty for the PS2 for example, is in fact primarily because the team behind the best PS2 emulator just is not that large of a team, and there is less demand for it. Hence why things like Dolphin which has a really, really good development team has made so much progress, same goes for the Cemy team, and even the XENIA team.
