Irdeto acquires Denuvo in order to increase security for video-games

Irdeto has announced that it has acquired Denuvo. As the press release reads, Denuvo provides anti-piracy and anti-cheat technology and services for producers and rights holders of computer games and home videos. Customers like Electronic Arts, UbiSoft, Warner Bros and Lionsgate Entertainment work with Denuvo to protect games like Star Wars Battlefront II, Football Manager, Injustice 2 or the blockbuster trilogy “The Hunger Games.”

As of January 1, 2018, Denuvo was fully acquired by Irdeto, a South African internet and entertainment group and one of the largest technology investors in the world. The buyer provides security solutions for digital platforms and applications in different sectors, including media & entertainment, connected transport and IoT. As of today, Irdeto’s software security technology and cyber services protect over five billion devices and applications for some of the world’s best-known brands.

Denuvo will continue to operate under its own brand and services. There will be no significant operational changes for Denuvo’s employees due to the acquisition. Their jobs in Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and the USA will remain fully in place and shall be expanded over time.

Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Founder and CEO of Denuvo, said:

“Irdeto’s global footprint, technology, services and piracy analytics capabilities will help us further expand our market share. We will be better equipped to reach key media and entertainment customers for whom gaming security is becoming increasingly important. Together with Irdeto, our expertise will provide our customers with uniquely powerful security solutions to help them make smarter business decisions.”

The acquisition enables Irdeto to grow its addressable market for its core technology and anti-piracy services. It also enables Denuvo to leverage Irdeto’s market-leading software security technology called Cloakware and some of the Cybersecurity Services Market Unit’s piracy services and data analytics to strengthen its solutions to better serve its customers.

Doug Lowther, CEO of Irdeto, added:

“With the global gaming market estimated to be worth $128.5B by 2020, we see tremendous opportunity to harness our nearly 50 years of security expertise to address cybersecurity requirements in the growing gaming market. We are excited about the opportunities that this acquisition creates for both organizations.”

  1. Well, I guess this means they found the R&D funding they need to keep redesigning it year over year….. for a while, at least.

    And the bullsh*t parade continues.

    1. This just makes me laugh, because it’ll only mean that they’ll be wasting millions upon millions in R&D, only for it to be wasted as people that band together with free time, will simply dismantle their “security” within a number of months/years.

Piracy has gone on for centuries, countless grandfathers, great, great great grandfathers have all died in the name of stopping the biggest scummiest evil known to man, and yet they all failed lol.

Whatever man can build, another can dismantle. Unless everyone is mind controlled or freedom in general is obliterated, then piracy will still remain and it’ll still be there going against the current flow that try to tackle it.

I’ve studied piracy and it’s history. I’m not going to throw my entire life away trying to fight something I cannot control/handle. No company on earth has managed to outright kill piracy in general, and no company ever will, unless freedom to do anything is completely abolished.

      1. With how society is evolving right now, the Orwellian vision we all like to satirize is slowly, but surely, becoming more and more true…

      2. I was talking about general piracy, not the pirates of the old days with their ships and flags. I’m talking about those that copy/bootleg all sorts of products, the type that steal anything that can be counted under general piracy.

    2. On the plus side there’ll be many more Denuvo articles at DSOG so we get to continue laughing at the increasingly deranged ranting of poor old codyzz1234 and Kim Kardashian West!

  2. Hell yeah baby!
Put more DRM layers, put some juicy double D and VMP! (sounds like some burger)
Meltdown people hardware and let the lag fest in games begun!
With this bloatware, PC components sales will raise up.

Fun fact: Even Steam CEG has performance impact

  3. More BS. Like Starforce and Securom before them, they’ll only have so many ways to protect their pos DRM for so long.

      1. That and middle market games that are too small to be considered AAA but to be big to be considered indie.

    1. not at all, AAA is already doomed that’s for damn sure
but look at Kingdom come deliverance, look at Metro franchise, Mount and Blade etc…
these AA studios started out small and became legendary with time
there is literally no reason to despair, unless you buy crappy AAA games

    1. The olds version got defeated?? Yeah of course but… how long will be unbetable? tic tac tic tac the time runs and someone will crack up this new version

  4. just a heads up:Denuvo version 5.0 is out now on new update of Marvel Vs capcom infinete.its confirmed.

  5. so many wasted shekels on this useless intrusive devil’s tech
they could just make i dunno… a GOOD GAME and sell it as it is without worrying about pirates

but you know this doesn’t really affect me, i haven’t bought a single AAA game all year in 2017 and i’m gonna keep it up until the next vidya crash
AA studios provide me with better content anyway…

    1. No, most AA studios are well aware that Denovu carries bad rep on it and most of them have choosen to go with something else or go DRM free like ELEX did

      i’ll give three examples:
Kingdom come deliverance: no Denovu- one time activation
ELEX:sells both on GOG and Steam, no Denovu
Metro Exodus: confirmed it will sell on GOG, no denovu as of now.

Also: A hat in time: no denovu and sells on GOG
AA are the champions of PC gaming

  6. This is the time to vote with the wallets guys. If it means complete end of the AAA games on the PC, so be it.

      1. I think people will keep buying, see AC: Origins PC sales below. Principles aside.

So glad for the PUBG tho, paving the way for some more innovative stuff (although BR aka King of the Hill is nothing new, players seem to respond to this well).

I am also very happy for Cuphead, although I’d rather if Microsoft closed their gaming branch altogether. Just because they really suck at this department – and that is since XONE fiasco.

I think Ori and Cuphead would’ve crowdfunded very well.

        1. “So glad for the PUBG tho, paving the way for some more innovative stuff”
I don’t see much of the appeal, i would rather have more single player story driven games being more sucessful, but those games doesn’t seem to get more than 1 million units like Cuphead and Divinity (and those are the exception, not the rule)

      2. implying aaa games on consoles are doing well. its almost as if people buy them just to have something to play on their crapboxes.

    1. PUBG is online only, don’t think you can pirate it. And the other games don’t quite get good numbers if compared to consoles. OTOH some console ports without denuvo (or cracked) did better than games with Denuvo, such as COD, Wildlands, ME SW and Nier

    2. So of those ten “console games” six of them are available on PC. Unofficially it’s seven if we include Zelda BotW. It’s arguably eight if include Mario Kart because the Switch version is essentially the same game as the emulated Wii U version.

All 6-8 games are also best on PC.

A PS4-only gamer can’t play 40% of those “console games”.
A Xbone-only gamers can’t play 40% of those “console games”.
A Switch-only gamer can’t play 60% of those “console games”.
A PC-only gamer can play up to 80% of those “console games”.

  7. ahahhahahahahhhahahahhahahhahahhah lol rip pirates losers durka durka zatra and other pirates on this site hahahhahhahaha what a great news death to pirates ouuuchhhh lol

  8. ahahhahahahah keep whining you little pirate and no there is no proof denuvo affecting the performance

  9. “or the blockbuster trilogy “The Hunger Games.” ”

also can you stop shilling for denuvo? are you geting paid by them per each article you publish or something?
