Microsoft has just announced a new remaster of the first Gears of War, Gears of War: Reloaded. This is the second remaster of Gears of War, as the first one was the Ultimate Edition. So, let’s see what Reloaded brings to the table.
Gears of War: Reloaded will have 4K assets. It will also have enhanced post-processing visual effects and improved shadows and reflections. MS also claims that there will be support for HDR, as well as for Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos. Plus, there will be zero loading screens during the campaign.
The game’s campaign mode will run at 60FPS. On the other hand, the multiplayer mode will offer framerates up to 120FPS. My guess is that this is a universal framerate setting, meaning that even the PC version will be locked at them. Or at least that’s what MS implied.
The game will also support cross-play between PC and consoles. It also won’t require a Microsoft account. So, this means that the Steam version will not force you to set up an MS account to play.
However, signing in with a Microsoft account will unlock full cross-platform functionality. As such, it will enable cross-progression across all devices. It will also allow you to send invites and play with friends across platforms, like Xbox to PlayStation or Steam to Xbox.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition used Unreal Engine 3 and had major issues when it came out on PC in 2016. From what I remember, The Coalition never fixed those issues. So, I’m curious to see what version of Unreal Engine this new remaster will use. Did the devs port the game to UE4 (or even UE5)? And what about the stutters that the Ultimate Edition had? Will Reloaded also suffer from them?
Gears of War: Reloaded will come out on Steam alongside the other versions. So, it’s at least good to know that it won’t be locked behind Epic Games Store or the Microsoft Store.
Lastly, MS and The Coalition haven’t yet shared the official PC requirements. Naturally, we’ll be sure to share them the moment they become available.
