Diablo fans, here is something special for you today. Troygentic has released a special version of DevilutionX, the open-source port of Diablo, called DamnationX.
DamnationX is basically a fan remake of Diablo 1 with some cool modern-day graphics features. It brings HD textures, ray-traced lighting, and online co-op.
What’s also cool here is that DamnationX is playable in your browser or on desktop. I don’t really know why anyone would want to play it in their browser. But hey, it’s a nice feature to have.
I don’t know if it’s the lighting, but with the new HD textures, the game seems to lose some of its grittiness. So, I hope the team behind it will overhaul the new textures. They look great on most characters. But the environments need a bit more work.
Do note that this is a very early version of the remake. As such, you may encounter some bugs and glitches. Things will get better over time, so make sure to keep that in mind.
All in all, this is an amazing fan remake of the first Diablo game. And it’s free, meaning that everyone can download and try it. So, even if you don’t like it, you can skip it, as it’s not an official remake. On the other hand, if you always wanted to play Diablo with ray-traced lighting, you can give this remake a go.
Personally, I love when modders add Ray Tracing, and especially Path Tracing, to old/classic games. I really, really enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Doom 2, Quake, GTA 4, and Serious Sam with their Path Tracing mods.
You can go ahead and download this fan remake of Diablo 1 from here. Below, you can also find a trailer for it. This trailer highlights most of its key features.
Have fun!
