Now, here is something that made me laugh. Irdeto/Denuvo has admitted defeat by filing a lawsuit against the cracker voices38. This is the first time I’ve seen Denuvo or Irdeto sue someone for cracking their games. To me, this is the definition of admitting defeat. Instead of improving its protection, Denuvo has resorted to suing the person who has been cracking it.
Cracking a digital protection system is obviously illegal, and Denuvo has the law on its side. There is no question about that. However, the company has not sued other crackers, such as EMPRESS or CODEX. This is the first time Denuvo has filed a lawsuit against someone for cracking its protection.
This lawsuit could lead to two outcomes. First, it could stop voices38 from releasing more cracks. The cracker may want to protect himself from the lawsuit and avoid further legal trouble. The second outcome is that he could simply give Denuvo the middle finger. If that happens, it would suggest that the cracker has taken strong steps to hide and protect his identity.
It will be interesting to see whether we’ll get any Denuvo cracks from voices38 in the next few weeks. Usually, the cracker releases a new Denuvo crack every two or three weeks. The last Denuvo cracks we got were for Star Wars: Outlaws, Persona 3 Reload, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Those cracks were made available on September 6th.
To be honest, I don’t really mind developers using Denuvo in their games. That is, of course, as long as it is implemented correctly. We’ve seen some games with stutter issues caused by poor Denuvo implementations. In terms of overall performance, though, we rarely see major issues on mid-range or high-end CPUs.
On the other hand, I’m also fascinated by what voices38 has been doing. This is one man against a whole corporation. And he’s winning. He made an entire company go after him. Now that’s a great achievement.
With the rise of AI, we may also see more crackers appear. AI has already sped up emulation and recompilation work. I could see the same thing happening with game cracks. In fact, I’m surprised we haven’t seen this happen already.
