AMD vs NVIDIA by MAHSPOONIS2BIG

AMD officially announces that AIBs will launch new brands for its GPUs, attacks NVIDIA’s GPP

Last month, we reported that third-party GPU manufacturers were removing AMD’s graphics cards from their gaming brands. And while some did not believe us, the cat is now out of the bag and all three major AIBs, Gigabyte, MSI and ASUS, have reportedly removed them. Not only that, but ASUS has already created a new brand under which it will be selling AMD’s graphics cards. And AMD has just made it official.

As AMD revealed, its add-in board partners launch new brands that carry an AMD Radeon product over the coming weeks. Furthermore, AMD attacked NVIDIA’s GeForce Partner Program, claiming that its new brands will not have any anti-gamer / anti-competitive strings (and that will most likely allow AIBs to sell whichever cards they want, no matter whether it’s coming from NVIDIA, Intel or any other company).

“These [AMD] brands will share the same values of openness, innovation, and inclusivity that most gamers take to heart. The freedom to tell others in the industry that they won’t be boxed in to choosing proprietary solutions that come bundled with “gamer taxes” just to enjoy great experiences they should rightfully have access to. The freedom to support a brand that actively works to advance the art and science of PC gaming while expanding its reach.”

AMD has also shared the key features of the brands sporting AMD Radeon products which are:

  • A dedication to open innovation – AMD works tirelessly to advance PC gaming through close collaboration with hardware standards bodies, API and game developers, making our technologies available to all to help further the industry. Through our collaboration with JEDEC on memory standards like HBM and HBM2, Microsoft on DirectX and Khronos on Vulkan, and through the GPUOpen initiative where we provide access to a comprehensive collection of visual effects, productivity tools, and other content at no cost, we’re enabling the industry to the benefit of gamers.
  • A commitment to true transparency through industry standards – Through industry standards like AMD FreeSync technology, we’re providing the PC ecosystem with technologies that significantly enhance gamers’ experiences, enabling partners to adopt them at no cost to consumers, rather than penalizing gamers with proprietary technology “taxes” and limiting their choice in displays.
  • Real partnerships with real consistency – We work closely with all our AIB partners, so that our customers are empowered with the best, high-performance, high quality gaming products and technologies available from AMD. No anti-gamer / anti-competitive strings attached.
  • Expanding the PC gaming ecosystem – We create open and free game development technologies that enable the next generation of immersive gaming experiences across PC and console ecosystems. These efforts have resulted in advancements such as AMD FreeSync adoption on TVs for Xbox One S or X, integration of forward looking “Vega” architecture features and technologies into Far Cry 5 without penalizing the competition, and inclusion of open sourced AMD innovations into the Vulkan API which game developers can adopt freely.

  1. If AMD built better gpus i would abandon Nvidia over this. its completely messed up. AMD get your crap together and i’ll go team red.

      1. Yea you’re right. But this wouldn’t even be a debate if Red team has a contender for the crown. As of now, it’s nowhere near 1080ti LET ALONE the 2080/1180/whatever name scheme they’re going with. It’s kind of sad that Nvidia can pull these moves. We all hate to see it but when it comes to buying a new product i usually save enough money to go for the best money can buy. That’s certainly not AMD if you keep performance in mind. So whatever Nvidia is going to do i don’t care. What i do care about is good competition between brands and aggressive pricing/strategies. Which isn’t happening right now because of the forementioned points.

        As gamers. We’re fked.

        1. IMO, I think NVidia knew that if they are going to pull this whole GPP stunt, they are surely going to gain some market share, because they still have monopoly at least in the “high-end” GPU market segment.

          1. And really, that’s the market that AMD needs to double down on, but instead over the past 5-6 years we’ve seen them only dealing with the low to mid range market.

We need 1080ti and 2080 contenders that either pull a 50/50 comparative rate or they take over them. They cannot keep on with the whole “10-20% less effective vs nvidia, but 10% cheaper” gig.

Nvidia needs actual and real heavy pressure on that end of the spectrum, and AMD are the only ones in the race that can do that.

          2. I mean, it’s what I and all of you here would want. We want to be able to choose between AMD and Nvidia for price/performance, rather than just choosing Nvidia for performance and AMD for just the cheap pricing.

          3. This price/performance thingy IMO what kills other player in this industry. Sure in short term it benefit us consumer but when these company end up killing and devouring each other until there is only duopoly left it is when things could start getting ugly.

          4. Better than letting one hold a monopoly, with the other seemingly doing next to nothing for 10-20 more years.

            A business doesn’t exist without it’s customers.

          5. No one else is really bothering to compete, thus the current situation we are in will stand furthermore.

          6. It feels like AMD doesn’t have enough money to R&D products that are very performing. If they could do it i’m sure they would but after years, all we see is a good minset but nothing to show for in the performance category.

They don’t want to go there right now. Maybe it’s the right move to consolidate markets that are very beneficial to them and then, only then try to go play in nvidia’s backyard.

          7. If the higher end market isn’t beneficial to them, then they should outright allow Nvidia to keep a hold on said market.

But we know that’s bad for consumers, so it’s in AMD’s best benefit and interest to gain a good chunk of that share back, rather than ignoring it for years longer.

          8. Bad or not for the consumer it’s safe to assume that AMD wether willingly or not let Nvidia win the performance crown. Been like that for years. Ever since i’ve heard the saying “Titan Killer”.

          9. Then it’ll only bode badly for them the longer they allow Nvidia to hold said crown.

          10. There are other company that can challenge nvidia (like Qualcomm). But majority of them did not like to spend the resource. The thing about nvidia is they do a lot of other hardware company did not like. Even AMD did not like it but in the end they have to follow suit else they can’t even compete at all.

    1. What card are you using now? Honestly, for most people, AMD makes cards that are more than sufficient. Unless you need more power than a Vega 64, AMD does make a good card.

      1. What you say makes no point, why should i settle with good enough or sufficient when i can get the best there is? Assuming i will make use of that increased performance.

          1. Personally i don’t but it’s because i don’t need it right now, i would’ve bought it if i wanted to run 4k ultra settings games.

          2. Well then, that’s the point you somehow missed.
You don’t need the fastest card. Therefore, AMD is an entirely valid and sensible option. People buy Nvidia, who becomes more monopolizing and blood sucking by the day. Why?

          3. Who says i don’t need the fastest card? Man you realize you make no sense right?

Because they have the better products, that’s why!

          4. Bro, you literally just said you didn’t.

            “Personally i don’t but it’s because i don’t need it right now”

I’m checking out of this room before the BS gets so high I can’t walk.

          5. Are you mental? I don’t need it NOW, i’m playing on a 1080p monitor why would i need the fastest card on the market now?

          6. Well i don’t have that, and i’m not interested at the moment, but at least you got the point of what i’m saying?

          7. What are you saying? 🙂

I get what you are saying. You want the best assuming you can utilize it. Even with a GTX 1080 there are some games you still can’t max out at 1080/60. In your case if you are not maxing out a high end card, a mid range 1060/570/580 may just do the job, but you will be replacing it sooner than a higher end card depending on your gaming preferences. If you don’t have the money or are okay at 30 fps gaming, you can get a ton of life out of a mid range card. Look how long those console gen’s last. I guess PS4/Bone is not the best example. LOL

That being said I got a 1080 about 6 months after launch for a good pre-mining days deal. Finally wanted to utilize it at higher res.

Bit of a tangent. I bought a 4k tv last year. I was looking for sub $1000 with good PQ. Ended getting one with 126 local dimming, HDR10/12, 1080 @ 120hz (true 120hz) and 4k @ 60. I set a custom resolution of 1620p as well. So I have the best of all resoltuions and if I can hit 4K shoot for 1080/120.

What vid card do you have? You can use DSR in NVCP. Looks great downsampling 4k to 1080p. Though 1440p looks odd. So it’s sort of 4k or nothing. Obviously reshade is the other options. Which I like using TAA @ 1080p + lumasharpen, no jaggies and nice clear image.

          8. Illogical assertions and associated mental gymnastics employed to justify them are a speciality of dirthurts. He’s easily ignored.

          9. So, it looks like you think you alone can judge all other members out here ?

And, you assume you are 100% perfect in all the comments and thoughts you post here ? Hmmm…

  2. Result of NVIDIA’s “shameful” GPP is on the rise.

What’s even more pitiful is that ASUS actually fell into this trap, more companies to follow suit.

By the way, this is getting too confusing as well, with regards to the changes made to brand and Radeon GPU Model names !

ASUS cards are going under the name of AREZ. No more ROG prefix for teh Strix series cards as well.

But I hope Sapphire, PowerColor and XFX don’t follow this trend. Also, ASRock is in my list.

  3. So AMD AIBs who selling only AMD cards will release new brand while Gigabyte, MSI, ASUS continue to sell Nvidia/AMD cards.

Looks like AMD is evil and should be boycotted/sued for anti consumer/anti competitive actions.

    ?

    1. Yeah but AMD don’t force them to make AMD cards only, pretty sure those AMD AIB’s could make NVIDIA cards if they wanted, unless someone can show me a contract that says they can’t make NVIDIA cards because AMD says so.

      1. It’s usually the other way around, Nvidia using their leverage on smallers AIBs into pressuring them to exclusively make Nvidia GPUs.

  4. “These efforts have resulted in advancements such as AMD FreeSync adoption on TVs for Xbox One S or X”
Which TVs feature FreeSync 2.0 then? Is there even one such TV available on the market?

      1. Which model? There was a Samsung press release from a couple of weeks ago stating that they’ll be offering such a TV some time later this year but, as far as I can tell, they don’t offer one right now.

          1. I’m viewing that TV’s specs on Samsung’s website and there’s no mention of HDMI 2.1 or FreeSync?

          2. I’ve no reason to doubt the accuracy of that tech site article from 2 weeks ago but it is most peculiar that Samsung itself isn’t mentioning said TV featuring HDMI 2.1 and VRR/FreeSync on its own website. So it seemingly remains unclear as to whether the TV actually produced by Samsung, as opposed to what a tech site speculated a couple of weeks ago, features HDMI 2.1.

    1. NU8000 from samsung. Has support for both variable refresh rate/VRR, as well as AMD’s FreeSync.

Though, it seems these TV models still use HDMI 2.0, instead of the HDMI 2.1 interface, as per the company’s info…

      This might change in future.

      1. Yep, I noticed that too, i.e. some articles on tech sites written a few weeks ago stating it would feature HDMI 2.1 whereas the actual official product page from Samsung makes no mention whatsoever of it featuring HDMI 2.1 and VRR/FreeSync. Samsung make great effort to highlight the TV’s gaming credentials (4K, low input lag, high refresh rate and HDR) and yet there’s no mention of VRR/FreeSync 2.0 so I struggle to believe their marketing department would be overlooking the mention of such a great new feature if the TV had it.

So, as you say, the NU8000 series TVs that started shipping to retailers earlier this week may seemingly feature HDMI 2.0 and thus won’t have FreeSync 2.0 functionality. Maybe Samsung will add HDMI 2.1 in a future product revision or perhaps leave it for the introduction of another new product range of TVs.

So, the original question remains. Is there a TV with HDMI 2.1 currently on the market? If not, then AMD’s boast was disingenuous.

          1. Nope, you got it wrong. like others mentioned, The OP was referring to the amd chips, apus, or the SoC designs for consoles.

          2. It’s wrong, end of story, I don’t care for what you people think he means, the statement is wrong.

        1. It’s a semi-interesting discussion point. None of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo manufacture their own chipsets for their consoles whereas with its Shield range of micro-consoles Nvidia does. So does that leave Nvidia as the only company that has designed and manufactured the chipset for their own console?

        1. Then apply that stupid logic to everything else. AMD CPU, GPU, motherboard chipset in a PC, so AMD make PC’s? LOL no.

          1. Very different, as current consoles wouldn’t have been possible as Intel have no suitable equivalent to the APU and integrated graphics cards.

The consoles would have had to had discrete cpu and GPU.

          2. AMD DO NOT make the console, they provide the APU, you don’t apply the same logic to other devices or consoles. NVIDIA make the Switch? Qualcom make mobile phones? No.

          3. I don’t know who you think you are ou who you are talking to, bit pipe the funk down.

It’s obvious they don’t make it as it’s called a Sony Playstation and Xbox is Microsoft product, but they do horneth provide the main components in the consoles and without them, this generation of consoles could have turned out very very different. All Sony and MS do is ask a manufacturer to put the components together in factory and develop the operating system for them. Isn’t like Sony or Microsoft themselves make the condoles Either. They develop the design and purchase components to be assembled.

          4. Shut the f*ck up and don’t speak to me like that, what I said whas correct.

          5. Oh look it’s the big tough guy who can swear at people on internet.

Grow up. You took my comment out of context and started talking as if I’m an idiot, crucially ignoring what I’m actually trying to say

No one was for a moment suggesting AMD are responsible for manufacturing the consoles in their entirety, pull your head out your a**e

    1. AMD doesn’t make consoles or even make the chips that go in consoles. They sold their Fab years ago but I agree that AMD was in a good position to sell their chips which they had manufactured. The alternative would be making a deal with Intel and Nvidia and that would have been more expensive.

  5. Nv is trying to force monopolyzation in the gpu market.

I can see a shitstorm comming for them a mile away .

  6. ” AMD works tirelessly to advance PC gaming through close collaboration with hardware standards ”

We’re so advanced right now, that Nvidia is at the top of the high end market and that we’re seeing a good chunk of games both new and old that hardly bother nor want to support G-sync/Free-Sync, so yeah, we’re so “advanced” right now AMD…

The only tech we see is that shown off in tech demos and then butchered to run on current/next gen systems, rather than being 110% fully utilized in PC games. You’ve got more bank now with 2 of the big 3 than you actually do PC gaming, so it’s no wonder as to where you’re at right now.

I’m all for seeing AMD succeed, but I hate both sides spouting off such trite and not showing it in full for what they talk about.

If you claim you;re advancing PC gaming, then sodding advance it, and now. Not 10 years later “huehue look what we spent 10 years festering with, it’s so new and hip”.

    1. Quite. The part which amused me the most from their PR piffle was AMD having deigned to characterise itself as,

“a brand that actively works to advance the art and science of PC gaming”

      Pretentious, much!

      1. If anything, they’ve sullied themselves with current gen far more than they have for PC.

“oh look at what we’ve done for PC!”

What, you saved me a few pounds on a mediocre GPU, that needs just as many patches as Nvidia’s one does, as well as getting gimped with playing other games that Nvidia does better at?.

        1. B..bu…but… Ashes of the Singularity!!!

Joking aside, while AMD’s PR may be a little cringe worthy at times they’re not in the same league of smug, holier than thou, self-righteousness as CD Projekt Red are so it could be much worse.

    2. Games don’t support Freesync or G-sync, what the hell are you even talking about? They’re completely independent of one another.

      1. I’m talking of games with fixed and forced caps.

If you cannot make use of the 144hz model’s at their designed level, then yes, you are being gimped.

        1. So you’re talking about bad ports from consoles. Then yes I’d agree, but they are rare these days.

          1. Not really just bad ports. There are indie games out thee like Wonder boy and the Dragon’s trap which is tied to 60fps and has no support for anything beyond 60hz monitors.

  7. Was diehard ATI when they were ATI, then changed to Nvidia for a few, then to AMD to try a couple, back to Nivida, and I think it’s time to change back to AMD.

Pretty tired of NVidia’s arrogance and, really, laziness.

Let’s see what you have come next product release AMD.

    1. Lol laziness? If they were AMD already have the performance crown right now. We might not like some of thing that nvidia did but “lazy” is not one of them. In fact nvidia is very ruthless. It is AMD that simply cannot keep up with nvidia. During pascal generation nvidia did not even need to go all out to win the crown. But in the end they still release 1080ti even when AMD have no direct competitor to 1080 in the market at the time.

  8. tbh i don’t expect AMD to come on top
their sole existence to me is to make sure Nvidia stays competitive
and for that i will root for them.

  9. I just wish AMD would quit crying about everything not being fair in world, and just actually do something better than Nvidia and maybe gamers would buy their products.

They made Ryzen and it was actually very competitive and so people bought it.

It’s not rocket science. I don’t care what dumb brand namings are associated with AMD or Nvidia, I just care about how it performs

  10. Anyone know how Rapid Packed Maths ended up working out in Far Cry 5? Cause from what I’ve seen the game performs worse on AMD, and they were supposed to be using it as feature in the game, if memory serves me right?

  11. @John. Please can you restore my comments ? They are getting caught as spam in mistake by the Disqus software….I posted 3,4 comments, but they all got deleted..

  12. As a 144 and 240 hz user AMD got my respect for working a lot on frametimes and framepacing on their drivers ill take worse performance and smooth gameplay than high fps and stuttery mess

  13. Where do all of these commenters think the money is going to come from for AMD to advance their GPU line? A few years ago they almost went bankrupt. They have 600 million dollars in debt coming due next year. They simply don’t have the R&D money to compete with Intel and Nvidia at the same time.

I would like to see a strong AMD to counter Nvidia but it’s not going to happen this year.

  14. Thank you for such an informative response… and curses to Disqus for the delay!

So it seems that those wishing to game on such a TV will be waiting a while longer. I read somewhere that LG are or soon will be allowing folk to pre-order their first HDMI 2.1/VRR/Freesync 2.0 high-end TV so maybe LG will beat Samsung in the race to be first.

Also, there was that upcoming super-expensive large-screen G-Sync TV in the news several weeks ago.

It’s not very often that I use my living room TV for gaming but it’s nice doing so every once in a while for certain games so if G-Sync starts being offered on several TVs (as opposed to a one-off TV with an obscene price premium) then it’d definitely factor in to my purchasing
    decision.
