Unreal (1998) Just Got an RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod Demo

Unreal fans, here is something for you. Modder’mstewart401′ has released a demo of the RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod for Unreal 1998. This demo is almost 10GB in size and covers the first 14 levels. As such, it’s a must for pretty much all those who want to replay this classic FPS.

This mod will make the classic FPS look way better. It adds full ray-traced lighting, realistic shadows, cool glowing light effects, and fog-like lighting. It also uses special materials that make surfaces react to light more realistically – like shiny metal, rough stone, or soft skin. Some parts of the game world have been upgraded too, so everything looks more detailed and modern.

In the mod, most of the new textures were made using RTX Remix’s AI tools. The modder also used NVIDIA’s assets to replace trees and plants and to add grass in outdoor areas. To do this, mstewart248 used a tool called UnrealED to place fake objects that they later turned into grass. They also used UnrealED to add new lights in places where the original game had glowing things like blue crystals or torches without real light sources.

Now, since this is a demo, it does not reflect the quality of the final version. Still, this looks better than the previous RTX Remix Mod we shared back in February 2024.

You can download the demo for this new Unreal RTX Remix Mod from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. This will give you a glimpse of what you can expect from it. So, be sure to watch it.

These past couple of weeks, we’ve shared a lot of RTX Remix Mods. So, you can find mods for Black MesaStar Wars Republic CommandoNFS: Underground, and Manhunt. You can also find some for BioShockMorrowindNFS: Underground 2Star Wars Jedi Outcast, Max Payne, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.

In January 2024, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider 2,  Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityManhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Then, in February 2024, we shared videos for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, and Midnight Club 2. Be sure to also check out some early RTX Remix videos and screenshots for Fallout: New VegasTom Clancy’s Splinter CellCOD 2, and Half-Life.

Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus ExTomb Raider, and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for Painkiller and Left 4 Dead 2. Oh, and don’t forget to try this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Lastly, you can download these amazing Path Tracing Mods for DoomDoom 2Quake, and Serious Sam.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. i fixed wuchang resolution in 8k and wowwww now i can say u were totally right john about this games graphics .crysis vibe is so heavy, plz try borderless gaming app and fix the resolution and enjoy this game

  2. Uhm… It's so cool, but the RTX implementation is artistically quite questionable.

A few too many textures range from ridiculously to a bit too reflective, and emissive textures like lights and screens are too bloomy and emit too strong lights.
I'd love to see it after a big polish pass.

  3. Looks nice but I won't play this one again anytime soon.
I finished it a couple of years ago and the map design was too tryhard for me. So obnoxious. Yeah, it was the 90s, but this one is over the top.

  4. Now every floor texture have reflections, newsflash, there are not that many reflecting surfaces in real life. I'm actually more impressed with the texture enhancements from these rtx remix tools (not this game in particular, but Half Life 2 and Vampire Bloodlines comes to mind). Is this like a package deal? Can't you get just the high res textures without the rtx fps tanking effects?

  5. As always with "atmospheric" games, I think that RTX is a huge nope.
It completely destroys the mood and aesthetics.
The original game + patch 227i + directx11 rendered (on ModDB) + some HD textures looks way better than that.

I much preferred the toxic green water, it looked more "alien", rather than the realistic water in this RTX mod.

    1. color grading was a hug thing in those games, it gave the game atmosphere, making everything dark and reflective ruins it.

  6. Gotta love to see this great game get some attention, gotta love run through a narrow corridor with flak gun in hand and think your king and can instagib everything – Then next you see a nasty Skaarj come at you and you reevaluate the situation quite quickly 🙂 Good times, good times!

That said some typical rtx remix design choices are present, overdoing many of the effects almost to the point of ruining the atmosphere

  7. On some other news, Intel XeSS2 super sampling tech is now finally supported on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, since the released of the XeSS 2 SDK v2.1.0.

Any GPU that supports Shader Model 6.4.

So the list now includes the GeForce GTX 10-series "Pascal" or newer cards from NVIDIA, and Radeon RX 5000 RDNA series from AMD, or newer.

So, expect support for XeSS SR, XeSS FG, and also XeLL (when used in conjunction with XeSS FG).

Of course, this all depends on developer integration and support, and how willing they are to update their binaries to support XeSS 2 in current games.

    ….

    1. By the way, do you know how OptiScaler works with new upscalers? I understand it acts as an interceptor and a translator, but for implementation, do they reverse-engineer how these upscalers work?

      1. Hey !

As far as my knowledge about OptiScaler goes, nope, the process does NOT involve any reverse engineering of any of the proprietary technologies like DLSS/FSR etc.

Like you already know, the process just leverages the existing API interface, acting as a translator/switchboard.

So I doubt there is any attempt to 'reverse engineer' any upscaling API technology like DLSS/FSR/XeSS.

To avoid any legal issues, I doubt the developer of "OptiScaler" will even try decoding the inner structure/code of any upscaling tech, and/or reverse hack it, be it DLSS or FSR.

The process is just redirecting the API calls.

    2. The new version of xess dont look as good on non intel gpus, so there is no point in gtx series being able to use it, they dont have asychronous computing it will run badly.

  8. I started making remix mod for American McGee's Alice and now understand why most other mods make everything shiny.. they're probably also using a PBRify workflow to automate the up-scaling and material assigning to each asset that it would take forever to go back and adjust each one to make the reflection make sense and not look like P Diddy went to town on the place.

  9. I personally like the Remixed projects even if they don't look perfect or in spirit of the original. I don't mind bringing the old games forward a bit.
There was a lot of good fun games but they are so dated now graphically. I'm glad we have these tools. Thanks modders for doing the hard work.
