YouTube’s ‘jackfrags’ tested a preview build of Halo: Campaign Evolved, and shared a video showcasing over 20 minutes of gameplay from it. The YouTuber has also enabled a Framerate, which can give us an idea of how the game runs right now on PC.
Jackfrags used an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090. The YouTuber ran the preview built at Native 1440p with DLAA on Ultra Settings.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a faithful modernized remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign in Unreal Engine 5. From what I can see, there is no setting for Ray Tracing (Hardware Lumen). However, we can assume there is support for Lumen and Nanite. There is also no support for NVIDIA DLSS 4 Ray Reconstruction, and the preview build does not allow you to enable Frame Gen.
The demo starts really promising. In the starting area, jackfrags is getting framerates around 120FPS. Then, when he goes to an outdoor area, the framerate drops to 100FPS. However, that’s not the lowest framerate in the video. Performance goes down to the 90s the moment you ride a tank (the tank sequence begins at around 11:00).
This means that it won’t be possible to play Halo: Campaign Evolved at Native 4K/Ultra on an NVIDIA RTX 5090. This should come as a surprise. As I’ve said numerous times, Lumen is a form of Ray Tracing. And, right now, it’s impossible to game at Native 4K with Ray Tracing even on an NVIDIA RTX 5090.
Microsoft claimed that the game would require an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 for gaming at 4K/Ultra with 60FPS. So, it’s now obvious that those PC specs weren’t for native resolutions. There is no way an RTX 4080 can run it with 60FPS at Native 4K/Ultra when the RTX 5090 drops to 90FPS at Native 1440p/Ultra.
So, there you have it. These are the first PC performance impressions of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Microsoft will release the game on PC on July 28. I don’t know whether or not we’ll get a code for it so that we can have a proper day-1 PC Performance Analysis article. In case we don’t get a code, I’ll be sure to purchase it and share my impressions once the game comes out.
Enjoy the video and stay tuned for more!
UPDATE:
Microsoft has also confirmed that Halo: Campaign Evolved will have a third-person mode. This third-person camera angle will allow players to experience iconic Halo missions like never before. Players will be able to enable it via the all-new “Perspective” Skull.
