As promised, Build A Rocket Boy has just released the first performance patch for MindsEye. This patch is 5.3GB in size, and we’ve tested it. So, does the game run better now? Let’s find out.
For these tests, I used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founder’s Edition. I also used Windows 10 64-bit and the NVIDIA GeForce 576.66 driver. This is the exact same PC config we had in our previous article. Hell, even the driver is the same. As such, it should give us a pretty good idea of the performance improvements.
Let’s start with the raw performance numbers. At launch, we were getting a minimum of 37FPS and an average of 45FPS on the NVIDIA RTX 5090 at Native 4K/Epic Settings. With this update, at the exact same location with the exact same settings, we’re getting a minimum of 37FPS and an average of 50FPS.
Things look similar with DLSS 4. Previously, we had a minimum of 53FPS and an average of 65FPS with DLSS 4 Quality (without Frame Gen). Now, we’re getting a minimum of 52FPS and an average of 67FPS.
In short, this is a nothing-burger. This is a huge disappointment as the devs have called it a performance update. Sadly, there aren’t any performance gains. At all.
The good news for NVIDIA owners is that DLSS 4 MFG looks WAY BETTER than before. Here’s me spinning the camera like crazy (you won’t be spinning the camera like that when you play). As you can see, the visual artifacts have been reduced. Again, this is by spinning the camera so fast that, in real-time, you can’t see anything at all.
But what about the stutters? Well, the game still suffers from traversal stutters. Take a look at the following image and pay attention to the frametime graph. As you can clearly see, we’re not getting a flat line. There are numerous spikes, meaning that you will still get stutters.
All in all, this isn’t the performance patch that will make the game run better. For the most part, this is a nothing-burger. I’ve also checked the executable file, and the game is still using Unreal Engine 5.4.4.0. So, perhaps the stutters will be reduced once the team moves to UE5.6? Who knows.
Build A Rocket Boy plans to release two other patches for MindsEye by the end of June. Naturally, we’ll test all of them at the exact same location on the exact same PC system. So, stay tuned for more!
