Windows 10’s Game Mode may be available only to UWP games

Last week, we informed you about a Game Mode that will be coming in the near future to Windows 10. This mode will reduce memory, CPU and GPU footprint on running apps when a game is running, which may potentially improve performance. However, it appears that this mode may be available only to UWP games.

According to WindowsCentral‘s sources, UWP games are required to be developed as “Game Mode enabled” applications.

“Previously, we were unable to ascertain whether Game Mode would be a feature restricted to games built for the Universal Windows Platform (UWP), but it does appear that this could be the case. Our information states that games developed for the Windows 10, Xbox One, and Project Scorpio ecosystem specifically need to be “Game Mode enabled” Universal Windows Apps (UWA).”

Do note that this does not confirm – at least yet – Microsoft restricting Windows 10’s Game Mode to UWP games. As WindowsCentral’s sources claimed, future games developed for Windows 10 simply need to be “Game Mode Enabled”. However, and given the fact that developers need to develop their games with the Game Mode in mind, this could potentially hint at a UWP-only feature.

Game Mode is expected to be released sometime in Spring 2017, and will be included in the Windows 10 Creators Update.

  1. How about fixing your broken a*s store before you start adding luxury features to it? Or better yet, shut it down and release those games on Steam & GOG where they’ll actually sell.

    1. But you know that UWP is not limited to Windows Store? You can buy UWP apps from different stores and even install it without any store. For example ‘Adobe XD’ is UWP app but it is not available on Windows Store. Adobe sell that app from own store and use classic installer. Any shop like GOG or Steam can sell UWP apps.

I really don’t know why some people still think that UWP is part of Windows Store. Check Google 🙂

    I dont believe you!

    1. Support then until they release all the halo games on PC then jump ship and get back to steam.

  3. it’s easy to get around the windows store limitation, just create a launcher of steam in UWP format that activates the game mode and remain resident in memory. a bit as do software “process lasso”

  4. Doesn’t this just mean that all UWP games have to support Gamemode, not that gamemode can only support UWP games?

  5. I hope they do make this a UWP exclusive feature, and dedicate a lot of time and money doing it.

That way, when people still don’t care about UWP and don’t download any games through it, Microsoft feel more buttmad than usual and the closer UWP will be to death.
