Things are looking really interesting for all those seeking to upgrade their graphics cards. NVIDIA will most likely launch the GeForce GTX1080Ti at CES 2017 (this Wednesday) and AMD has just announced that it will preview its new Radeon Vega architecture this Thursday.
AMD released a short video to hype this event, and there is a countdown timer on its official website. That timer ends this coming Thursday, so we expect AMD to preview its new architecture that will power its upcoming graphics cards.
Early benchmarks suggest that AMD’s high-end VEGA GPU is close to NVIDIA’s GTX1080. However, we all know that NVIDIA is working on the GTX1080Ti which will, obviously, be more powerful. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether VEGA will be able to compete with NVIDIA’s upcoming GPU.

If amd can hit 1080 levels approximately and undercut nvidia by reasonable amount, then they will hopefully do well with this.
Nvidia get away work charging too much as they can basically. Amd don’t need to go after the highest end users, just try win back some of other users at middle and lower end by charging good prices for less than nvidia prices.
This^^ Which why going with the 480 was the best route possible for them. Enthusiasts tend to forget that they’re a niche crowd and most people don’t spend $500+ on a GPU.
I don’t want to spend 500+ on a new GPU every few years, but I damn well want that high end perf and with the way technology is progressing, it shouldn’t cost you your soul either, so someone at the top is playing the greed game.
Nvidia charging more and more each year is what changed my mind on wanting to stick with the green team. I simply cannot afford to “keep up” with what they are selling and they aren’t exactly giving out the desired output to match the price tag either.
Whenever I see a 1080 card not eating AAA console ports for breakfast, I can’t help but facepalm at the price tag and perf levels.
AMD can win back high end users by matching the high end that Nvidia put out, but without charging you a soul for it. AMD completely ignoring the high end is completely asinine though.
I think reality is amd can’t compete at highest end. They simply don’t spend as much on r & d and nvidia barely have to break sweat to have to win with enthusiast crown. AMD release something to compete with 1080 and nvidia have the ti version ready to win it back. They probably holding back the one above that as no need to release it.
Same happens in mid and low end too, but in that market people are more likely to be penny pinching and a few fps either way won’t sway them to drop extra $50 .that’s why amd aiming for this market
I still currently am with green team and my 980ti, but I’m like yourself and no longer prepared to chase the latest enthusiast gpu and I’m happy if amd release great products that force nvidia to compete price wise. I’m tied to gsync currently so won’t switch soon. But we all benefit by genuine competition
Not completely true, 970 outperform 480 in quantum break in dx11 for example.
I’m willing to bet my 980ti holds up pretty well against fury x for some time to come.
Let’s take a recent AAA title like watchdogs 2. my 980ti comes off better than fury x and the 970 still is within touching distance of 480 and the 970 is renowned aa a gpu that can be overclocked pretty damn well.

Difference with me atm, is I want a Gsync, but at the same time I’m waiting to see what AMD can offer me in terms of 1080 perf and price before I decide to fully switch over to Red team and Free-sync.
It needs to undercut them first to actually prove it can get back in first. Which is what I’m currently waiting on.
I’m not really following you regarding Nvidia over charging for their GPUs. I spent $1,100 on 2 GTX 780’s in 2013. Fast forward 3 years later, I bought a GTX 1080 for nearly half the price, with better performance, cooler temps, and much lower power draw over my old SLI setup.
My point is their products go up every in price every generation effectively.
There’s no real competition for them to drive prices down. Isn’t a comment on quality of their products, which I still think are best overall.
if you look closely nvidia will try compete properly in segment where AMD can compete with them. GTX1060 MSRP for example is very close to RX480. 1050ti was set at $140 (exactly the same as RX460 4GB despite being noticeable faster). some people might said it does not count since AMD already drop their price but if not for 1050ti launching at such price AMD would not drop their existing price either. 1070 at around $400 is not that bad either. that is pretty much how 670/770 cost back in 2012/2013. 970 was possible at $330 because at that time 28nm node already become much more cheaper than it first comes out in 2011. only on the high end the pricing goes crazy.
Nvidia tend to launch higher priced and then amd has competing product priced lower, ando nvidia drop price but are still priced above amd one.nvidia dominate market, so they have only to be around price of amd products. They don’t ever have to undercut, whereas amd find itself constantly having to try black ball nvidia just to compete.
Look at the 480 release. Amd reportedly was pushing 8gb iterations out door in 4gb boxes , and at a loss because they didn’t have enough 4gb ones ready to ship.

I’d love to see them pull out some good eprf levels against the 1080ti, but sell at a very reasonable cost.
will they? last time they launch their flagship card instead of undercutting nvidia pricing they just match them in pricing. then they sell nano at premium price for being the fastest mini ITX card.

I don’t hate AMD, I’m far more likely to go Red Team this year, than to stay with Nvidia, but their marketing is just as cheesy and obnoxious as Nvidia’s is.
well it is not AMD if they cannot come up with commercial that mocking or bashing competitor product. sometimes i do think all that money used for those commercial are better spend on improving their developer reach.
And BTW, “Make some noise” isn’t a very good slogan for a GPU.
