Vikings – Wolves of Midgard announced, first screenshots released

Kalypso Media and Games Farm revealed today Vikings – Wolves of Migard, a bold new IP that will pit Action RPG fanatics against the most legendary of all mythological conflicts: Ragnarok.

Regarding the game’s story, this is what Kalypso Media had to say:

“Legend has it, that when the coldest winter descends, the Jotan will return to take their vengeance against the Gods of Asgard. The world is on the road to perdition and the fate of Midgard hangs in the balance. But when the Fire and Frost Giants begin to merge their armies, they encounter the clan of the Ulfung – the Wolves of Midgard. Bloody, but unbowed following the destruction of their village, this notorious band of ostracized Viking warriors are determined to seize their destiny and save the world. As clan chief, you must save Midgard from complete annihilation, and spearhead the charge to vanquish the fiendish creatures of the Fimbulwinter.”

Vikings – Wolves of Midgard is coming in 2017 and promises to transport you to the Shores of Midgard, a world based upon the mythology and history of the Vikings. Players will battle the fearsome Jotan, hordes of terrifying undead monstrosities and other myriad beasts of Ragnarok, either on their own or by teaming up with a friend via the online co-op multiplayer mode.

Players will be able to choose between sword and shield, two-handed hammers, dual-wielded axes and swift bows. Naturally, by killing enemies, players will be able to acquire and enhance devastating Spell Powers and other special unlockables.

As well as the regular story mode (and New Game+), players can also test their mettle in the ‘Trials of the Gods’ – a special challenge mode that rewards the best warriors with special equipment and runes.

Here are the key features of Vikings – Wolves of Midgard:

  • Fantasy Meets Nordic Mythology: Travel the realms of earthly Midgard, freezing Niflheim and boiling Balheim, either as a fierce Viking warrior or merciless shieldmaiden.
  • The Deadly Fimbulwinter: Withstand the deathly colds and protect yourself from exposure to nature’s wrath in order to survive.
  • Tribute to the Gods: Collect blood from fallen enemies and sacrifice it at the altar to gain gifts from the Gods to enhance your powers.
  • Berserker Rage: Let your anger take hold by activating Rage Mode to overwhelm your enemies in bloodthirsty combat.
  • The art of combat: Perfect your skills with each weapon to unlock their true potential, including swords, bows and spell-powered canes.
  • The Power of the Gods: Make the abilities of the Gods your own by equipping power-infused amulets, like the Talismans of Thor or Loki. Put your new skills to the test by competing in the Trials of the Gods to earn further rewards.
  • Teamwork: Team up with a friend and journey to the Shores of Midgard together in an epic two player online co-op mode. Choose between four difficulty levels to suit your skills and talents. Do you dare attempt the unrelenting hardcore mode?
  • The Clan of Wolves: Restore and rebuild your village and lead your clan to glory. Upgrade buildings such as weaponsmith, armourer, runesmith, and mead hall to unlock more content and better equipment.
  • Legendary Weapons: Gather the scattered fragments of mythical weapons and armors to take on the most fearsome creatures of the realms.
  • A Class of its Own: Become even more powerful in the next life by attempting New Game+, and push your Viking warrior or shieldmaiden to their limit.
  • Destructible Environments: Utilize your surroundings by burying your foes under falling rocks or pushing them off high cliffs.

Enjoy!

  1. Darn it, isometric again? Why can’t these devs take a bit more time and do a proper third-person game? I know it costs less to do this isometric stuff, but still. It’s like every time I get excited about games with an interesting setting, something screws up. Last time it was Ruiner, and now this. These isometric RPGs/shooters and first-person horror/survival games are seriously getting monotonous.

    1. A fully realized 3D map takes more than just time. its money also. on a shoestring budget iso view is preferred.

      1. Yes, I guess so. I mean some have attempted it but it hasn’t turned out that well. Still with UE4 and CE5 going free, I hope that entry bar has been somewhat lowered. In fact there’s one I’m following rather closely… The Memory of Eldurim. Let’s see where they manage to go with that.

    2. You are massively underestimating the time and dedication required to make fully 3d worlds with good polish.
I do agree with your sentiment but its not exactly feasible for these small dev teams.

And in the meantime why don’t you play Kingdoms of Amalur, its basically an arpg in 3rd person.

      1. Holy sh*t someone actually mentioned Amalur! That is one amazing game and exactly the kind of stuff I’m hopeful for — large fully-realized open worlds with engaging combat and the thrill of exploration. I mean it’s up there among my top five RPGs even! Such a shame the developer isn’t around any longer and the possibility of a sequel seems minimal. I also snatched Bound by Flame and Lords of the Fallen quite recently as well but haven’t got around to playing them yet. You should check them out if you can. Neither of them are quite on the level of what Amalur is, but they seem fine I suppose.

        1. True, even if the melee combat was somewhat on the tedius side, I greatly enjoyed my time with the game. And the world was vast and quite pretty, while the presentation was weak the game had a decent story, lore and role playing opportunities. Now, I feel like playing it again. Darksiders 2 is somewhat on the similar side, so I guess you can keep your hope up for DS3 to be like an ARPG in 3rd person.

Bound by Flame looks a bit too rough to be my cup of tea, and last time I tried Lords of the Fallen, my AMD card was on fire. Will try it once more though.

          1. I found the melee combat in Amalur very enjoyable actually, especially with the Fateshifting. They did a lot of things with the combat, making it more akin to intense hack and slash games that I never really saw in another RPG before. Also the ‘Destiny” system was another new spin on skill trees that I thought was very well-crafted.

          2. Yeah, the destiny system was very cool, it allowed a lot of contemporary hybrid classes. But, I felt the melee combat left a bit to be desired, I vastly prefer the combat in something like Dragons Dogma over what I got in KOAR. Melee started to feel tedious, the mage class was what made the game for me.

          3. Yeah, Dragon’s Dogma did some really awesome things no doubt, but I played Amalur back when it came out. At that time, that sort of combat felt so darn satisfying because there was no other game on PC which played like it, or at least that I was aware of.

  2. Im sorry i can’t take a developer of a ARPG series seriously when they showcase their game with a controller.

    1. I actually prefer controller when playing as a warrior. As much as I love torchlight 2, the game lacks controller support and therefore I inevitably play only the mage class even on my xth playthrough. Controllers feel more inutiative than a mouse and feel more like you are in-the-action rather than just controlling it.

With all that said, I’ll still end up playing with the mouse cause Mages ROCK.

      1. I dont feel the same. I can fire off skills in a fraction of a second, i have superior keybinding options and very precise movements and aiming with a mouse.

        1. Can’t disagree there, as functionally k/b and mouse is superior. But sometimes I would like to play laid back with lower concentration, so I welcome controller support.

  3. Finally an Arpg that’s worth playing. This looks pretty good and in an interview they talked about the quality and polish trying to match diablo 3.
After Torchlight 2 this seems to be the only one looking decent.

      1. While I did enjoyed Grim Dawn to some extent, it lacks the polish that Torchlight 2 had. In Torchlight 2 every attack felt impactful and every spell felt powerful. And the armor customization was godly.
POE lost me at the always online req. as I play these kinds of games on my laptop. Victor Vran and Hellsing were both pretty good, but fundamentally I prefer to play as a female in ARPG’s. Regardless they didn’t grab me the way TL2 did.
Exanima is one I haven’t heard of, so thx for that.

        1. How far did you get in Grim Dawn man? Ive been playing that game for hundreds of hours and watched video upon video explaining mechanics and builds. I dont see how TL2 can even compare to something as detailed and deep as Grim Dawn.

          1. I didn’t play much, while the world was kind of interesting the excessive amount of enemies and lack of decent spells killed it for me. At most I spent 7-10 hours.
So, since you spent much time. Do we get flashy spells later on? Also, are there lots of armors, cause in the time I played the loot was.. .. .lacking.
Does the game have 2 handed staves. I found none in my play time.

While torchlight 2 doesn’t have that many builds/classes, the ones it have are pretty stellar. And it lets me role-play as a female ice mage. Grim dawn is severly lacking in polish, Titan quest was rough but alright. Grim dawn lacks the improvements I expected. There is a reason everyone loves Diablo 2, everything in the game feels good, and the sorceress in the game is the most fun I’ve ever had in an arpg.

  4. Actually most arpg are made for PC… Torchlight 2, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn… ffs only diablo is on console. oh and the first VH even though tthta series is a trilogy…

    1. Witcher 2 & 3, Dark Souls 1, 2 & 3,, Risen 1, 2, & 3, Elder Scrolls (III-V) Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, all had console releases… So I don’t know about most, unless you have a very narrow definition of ARPG.

There’s still plenty of indie RPGs that get released as PC exclusive, but seems to me like most AAA developers develop for consoles now.

      1. Those are not the type of arpg we are talking about. You have your action rpg like witcher and dark souls and you have your arpg (dungeon crawlers) with point to click gameplay like Diablo and torchlight. Two completely different sub-genres that just happen to have the same label.

Obviously im talking about diablo style games… ffs why would i care if 3D action games used a controller ?

  5. Finally a new ARPG that could be worth my money. I just hope it lives up to what it’s trying to deliver. Last thing I want is something like a game that tries to pass off as being good but ending up on a bad note and state (like Planetary Annihilation tried to do in the RTS space).

    1. Just a tip. Take your time with the game, read everything, explore. this is one of those games you dont want to rush through. Hell… treat it as a one play through experience. its really a fun game. Super long too.
