Crystal Dynamics and Nixxes have released a new patch for Rise of the Tomb Raider that adds DirectX 12 support to it. In addition, this patch adds a new benchmark to allow easy comparison of performance on different systems, as well as at different graphics settings, and fixes some HBAO+ and other Ambient Occlusion issues.
As Nixxes noted:
“At Nixxes we have a long history of working with consoles as well, and one of the large differences between developing for consoles and developing for PCs is the level of access to the hardware available to us. We can leverage every single hardware feature and every bit of CPU power available in the most efficient way possible. With DirectX 12 we are taking a massive step forwards for bringing a lot of that flexibility to the PC as well. For Rise of the Tomb Raider the largest gain DirectX 12 will give us is the ability to spread our CPU rendering work over all CPU cores, without introducing additional overhead. This is especially important on 8-core CPUs like Intel i7’s or many AMD FX processors.”
This patch will be auto-downloaded from Steam, and below you can find its complete changelog.

Seeing a lot of bad results even on amd hardware. I get a 5 fps loss on my 4670k, 970.
Yet another poor implementation of DX12 like in HITMAN.
Already seen the raw power of what DX 12 is like with the latest Hitman lol.
No performance gain here as far as I could tell (FX8350, 8GB 1866mhz RAM, Asus Strix GTX970 OC), saw some more use of the CPU here and there (like up to 85% but it was always at 45/50%) depending in the map/area, and less use of RAM overall (56% of my 8GB).
I had some weird stutters at first (not using the latest recommended drivers) but then the game ran as always.
In some areas that looked blurry at Geothermal Valley now look more clear, and image quality seems to be a little bit better. But the game looks basically the same of course, nothing weird or glitches like some people said at least in my case. I think it fixed some glitches in the render distance.
Not a “revolution” and I personally don’t think that DX12 will give us performance gains if it is implemented this way of course. The game should be made from the ground up, it is just a DX11 game with some DX12 features.
Quick DX12 Patched games only benefits people with slow PCs that are CPU bound and the GPU is throttling

A new patch came out (67MB) and did some more tests.
Benchmark gave me the same results in DX11 and DX12 with my config (lowest things I use are FXAA because SMAA is garbage in this game for the frames it takes, no film grain and textures to high instead of Ultra, the rest maxed), at 1920 x 1080p 73/74FPS in 2 passes made on each one.
But I noticed some weird frame drops in Geothermal Valley in DX11, then tried DX12 and frames were a little bit higher there.
Also after the new patch the driver crashed once. Saw an artifact in the lighting (god rays at the big hole up in that cave) at the very first camp of the game in DX12 which is not present in DX11, and VXAO does not work under DX12 (you can’t select it), only in DX11.
Can confirm that image quality is a little bit better in DX12 while using FXAA as something positive.
The 67mb patch was just to fix VXAO as it was not working for certain people.

I got 10-15% performance boost with DX12 on my GTX 980 Ti and i7-4790k. I am expecting AMD cards to be even higher. Though DX11 still has ReShade/SweetFX and VXAO so I sticking with DX11 for now.
Okay, so now we know that patched-in DX12 won’t ever be really good. Hitman and Tomb Raider confirmed that.
Tested it out and SLI isn’t working with DX12 🙁
No crossfire also
People claim that a 970 gets from 46 fps to 60. That seems pretty good! Can anyone test a 760/770 as well?
That’s only if you’re CPU bottlenecked with a GTX 970, i.e using an old CPU.
i7 5960x @ 4.4ghz / 16GB 3000mhz ddr4 / 980 @ 1400mhz
Game at max settings with reshade SMAA
dx11 benchmark returns 59~
dx12 returns 52~
Also worth pointing out that the benchmark is not even good. Anyone who has played through the game will see right away they use 3 short sequences that are not indicative of the more intensive environments. I get around 60 through most of the game but in certain areas like the first big snowy open area fps dips to the 40s. Similar with some parts of the geothermal valley. benchmark fly-by is very misleading.
Also somewhat annoying is certain overlays aren’t working in dx12, like fraps and afterburner / rivatuner. steam overlay works though.
Game is definitely sucking more vram in dx12 mode, the fps was choking sometimes in the installation area. In dx11 all of the vram is used (it jumps around from 4000 to 4080MB+ ) but it never choked through the whole game, it was just able to cope with it.
Thanks for posting, I thought it was just my setup.
I seen an fps loss on dx 12 also on max everything, But not sure it may be sli not working properly on dx 12. Roughly a 5 fps loss on my system, 5960x@ 4.0ghz 32gb 2400 ddr4, 2x980ti EVGA OC cards on 1440p 165hz monitor.
Also random crashes on startup using certain overlays like you mention, NZXT Cam OSD, fraps on mine, Went back to dx 11 and no issues whatsoever.
Made the game playble with very high textures!! I have 2500k 3,3ghz 12 gb ddr 3 1600 mhz GTX 970 G1 GAMING 4 GB. I was forced to set texturees on high isntead of very hgh(i bought the game at release date) as it was unplayble at release date. But now with the patch i run benchnark and the game is perfectly playble with very hgh textures as i have more than 50 fps with the card at stock speeds. Iif o verclcok the card to it limits(+100 mhz core + 450 mhz memory i get much more!!). Good work Microsoft and Nixxes! Congratulations!
However i have already finished the game one week after release so i will only play it agaib when capital controls are lifted because then i will be able to buy the Baba Yaga DLC. There is also the rest of the secondary missions to do if i want as iam at 59% compleiton when i finished the game on February 4,
4670k, 970
Just tested on Both my PC’s (one with an i5 4670, one with an OC i7 4790k. Both use GTX 980s) I5 difference was negligable (4K resolution). The i7 system (1440p) was alot worse in DX12. Avg went from 48.71 fps to 35.99 fps. Hoping a few patches over next few days will smooth things out.
If I tell you that I don’t see any difference will you believe me? Or if it’s there, it’s not as big as between SSAO and HBAO+
I believe you. Look at the shadow in front of Lara on the wall, it’s showing in VXAO. It’s mainly better in foliage as well and edges of occluded geometry ,basically it’s a finer more detailed HBAO+ but nothing staggering.
Oh, I see it now! But yeah, it’s not as dramatic as going from SSAO to HBAO+. What is the performance hit?
Anyone with an AMD cards that can provide benchmarks? I’m looking green with so many Nvidia benchmarks LOL.
yeah, like what do you expect from dx12 and nvidia, people 😀 I hope someone will post amd gpu tests
i am using 280x 3gb and with dx12 i am getting very noticeable fps boost(5 to 12).
Bad thing that i have already beaten this game twice,,i wish they had released this few weeks earlier and yeah i m getting temperature boost as well in a positive way,so less gpu stress.
That’s nice! Seeing your icon makes me hope The Witcher 3 gets a DX12 patch before the next expansion. I could use those 5 to 12 extra fps haha.
is there any DX12 test software like Unigine Heaven?
So far there is on one that only testing draw call which did not represent gaming performance. For true dx12 bench will have to wait for 3dmark for dx12 which might make it’s appearence in upcoming GDC
just like Ashes, i got lower fps on DX12. lol
More bad news for Nvidia especially if they enable the Asyng Shading code path that runs under the Xbox version.
