Earlier today, Microsoft released a new set of screenshots for Rise of the Tomb Raider. According to the company, these were from the Windows 10 version of the game. And while this is a hint at the upcoming DX12 patch that has been rumoured for a while, Microsoft went one step further and confirmed that Rise of the Tomb Raider was running in DX12 at its Xbox Showcase Media Event.
As Microsoft confirmed:
“DirectX 12 Showcase: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Ashes of the Singularity, King of Wushu – Square Enix, Snail, and Stardock showcased their latest DirectX 12 enhancements for Rise of the Tomb Raider, King of Wushu, and Ashes of the Singularity on Origin PCs, iBUYPOWER Revolt 2, and Maingear PCs. Ashes of the Singularity is taking advantage the DirectX 12 multi-adapter technology, allowing PCs to use multiple GPUs, even from different manufacturers. Rise of the Tomb Raider was playable for the first time at the Xbox Spring Showcase running DirectX 12.”
Nixxes and Crystal Dynamics have not stated anything yet about this DX12 patch but our guess is that it will be coming really soon. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not reveal any additional information about it, so we don’t know whether this DX12 patch will offer a performance boost or whether it will feature NVIDIA’s VXAO tech.
Stay tuned for more!

How hell will DX12 help a VRAM heavy game?
If they do what they did on console and use Async for Ambient Occlusion a 260x would get better FPS than a Xbone instead of half the FPS at lower settings like the 750Ti and it did.
Highly doubt MS will do that though. Just like Gears. Much easier to just hire Nvidia to implement their own HBAO so that you do not make your POS console look bad.
So DX 12 will do….nothing, just like on Gears. What it will do is probably lock it to their stupid store on their new stupid OS, for stupid people to buy so they have a nice walled garden version of the game with no mods or anything.
Nvidia has now partnered with MS on every game and is on the upcoming Fable as well. The consoles get free Ambient Occlusion and we get DX 12 only in name.
Yes. Seems to me DX12 is being used more as a way to market the Win 10 exclusivity than for any `necessary` technical reason.
Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner here.
DX12 provides low level access. If used properly, this WILL allow many developers to increase performance. That’s just a fact. We haven’t yet seen games that are made from the ground up to properly take advantage of DX12
Ashes of the SIngularity demonstrates the best case scenario, where they have lots of draw calls.
It’s good to see someone here that knows what they are talking about for a change, lol.
Well HBAO+ is much better than the junk default in games like ROTTR and the default is cheap for a reason.
Exactly. People see free AO and they think that it should be more accurate with less performance impact. Free is magic word for them because it obviously means better, more effective and performance free. 🙂 I hope the implement NVIDIA VXAO tech. That should be graphics improvement.
Console needs it’s so called “free” AO, but it’s still 30FPS LOL.
The ASYNC AO used in ROTR on the Xbox One is absolute rubbish compared to HBAO+ as well as far less accurate.
By making the game use more VRAM? now i know why they recommend 390X for GoW ultra setting.
Based on articles I’ve read, instead of PC’s treating multiple GPU VRAM as 1, PC’s will instead stack the VRAM. For example, two 970’s will be 7+1GB VRAM
That’s not just an automatic feature that comes with DX12 by default, there’s the potential for it, we’re nowhere close right now to being able to use that and it would require developers to program their games and engines in very specific ways.
Yeah, I know that. But the guy asked something that wasn’t mentioned in the article so I answered him with what I know
The game is only VRAM heavy if you use VHigh textures, which are broken and offer little to no visual difference over High while consuming twice the VRAM.
According to the developers themselves there are several CPU bound areas in the game.
I liked this game, but I asked for a refund with steam because it was stuttering too much in my PC. I heard it was a VRAM problem, but it was stuttering even on the lowest settings. And my PC could run GTA5 and Phantom Pain on Ultra (GTX 970).
I`ll probably buy it on the PS4 if it ever come out there.
i max it with a 980 np
>it was stuttering even on the lowest settings
Way to blame the game for your messed up system.
Only way you should have stuttered was if you tried using the VHigh textures.
Thats right, he probaby are one more STOOPID console peasant, that cant have his pc properly ser ut huh!
You can’t be THAT tech-savvy with this level of grammar. LOL
yea he confirmed peasant lol… he even has a PS4. no PCmasterrace does that. Rather just buy an extra gpu for sliii.
It’s a GTX 970, with 16 GB of RAM and an i7 4770 CPU. The game was stuttering with low settings. As I said, this configuration runs any other modern game on Ultra with no problem, so it’s probably the game that messed up somewhere.
There’s no reason whatsoever the game would be stuttering on low settings with those specs.
If that was the case everyone would have experienced it.
Yeah. That’s what left me stumped. The stuttering happened on scene changes and a big stutter fest right at the beginning, at the panoramic shots of the Russian base.
I heard more people reporting similar cases, and Steam refunded me the game even after more than 2 hours of playtime with that report.
It makes a ton of draw calls, hitting the DX11 upper limit. It’s not necessarily a problem with your or anyone’s system.
So what CPU and motherboard do you have and what drivers?.
I can’t say I have noticed stuttering on PC myself.
It’s comforting to see some people are not falling for this DX12 hype,
there’s nothing but hindrance so far coming from games ” ALSO ” having DX12 support.
It’s also a hindrance that it’s locked to a single OS, there is no choice, no other option whereas Vulkan is supporting multiple OS’s giving PC gamers multiple options, more options are better than just the single one.
Hardware changes… I dont have win10 but as much as I hate win10 it is nice and unique to have 1-everlasting os built that way it can always be updated so we dont have to upgrade everynow and then.. windows200, win-xp..vista..win7… etc from now on with windows 10 they will make less money as there are not any plans for win11 etc.. (I support Vulkan)
DX12 can fvck off. Just another one of M$’s gimmicks to force u to update the OS

That’s the problem, I rather my OS not be automated. Less control for ‘big brother’ to become even more invasive? No thanks. Idc how snappy of an improvement or how much functionality it has over the last OS.
bro you didnt understand. You will have 1 system, updates or not, you can disable it and just run version 10.x.1 and you’ll decide if u ever want any changes after that…
O ok, gotcha
I can make it simple for you.. just like the Iphones =) Im currently using Ios 6.0.3 …. and the newest is 9.2.1 or something… I didnt bother to update… buts its still Ios =)
I stopped listening as soon as you said you are using IOS… 😉
its not listening when your reading.
10 is everything 7 is, but better. You’re a dumb a*s.
Seriously stfu… I never said Win10 wasnt better
Yet you’re crying about being “held hostage”. It’s a free upgrade. Why are you here bashing it then?
I’m not bashing Win10. H3ll I’m actually commenting from the Win10 OS rite now. However, what I said was straight facts: I wouldnt have said M$ is holding DX12 hostage if they were gonna release it for Win8 and Win7 but evidently they have no plans to release it for those platforms.
You can actually turn off automatic updates and 99% of the spyware etc. There are plenty of articles out there that can help if your unsure about what you are doing.
That’s my point… U should never have to do that with a newly installed OS oob. I am aware there are articles online to counteract the automated updates. For example, OS X for Mac doesn’t just d/l shlt out of the blue in the background, it will alert me when the system is ready to install those updates so I have a chance to give auth. Call my comment griping, ranting or complaining if u want but it’s the principal.
I just don’t understand the paranoid attitude towards Win 10. It is far more streamlined than 7, boots and shuts down in seconds and is better in every respect thus far imo.
I hear u, it’s no shade towards Win10. I’m actually commenting from the Win10 OS rite now… I just built my Skylake rig on Sunday and if it wasn’t for the PS/2 ports that came w/ my motherboard I would’ve never been able to install Windows 7. M$ or Intel (don’t know who to blame) disabled USB 3.0 oob when installing Win7 (but not when I installed Win10), so if that isnt an indirect method of them forcing users to upgrade to Win10 then idk what else u would call that.
“99%” is a gross exaggeration, as later research discovered. No matter how much you order Spyware 10 to stop spyware’ing you, it still continues to do so more often than not.
Plus there’s a lot of base stuff that you just CAN’T stop, no matter what.
Well there is probably far more that you can disable than you realise though admittedly you have to dig deep to get to it which is wrong.
So I take it all these people bemoaning Windows 10 don’t use smartphones or tablets then, as they are riddled with it.
What, the Surface? Meh. Windows 8 had a fair adoption rate (overall), large chunk of that mobilized to Windows 10 quite fast, & from there….. the whole “unified OS across all devices” thing carries a lot of weight these days with mainstream people.
Plus a lot of people just don’t care about being tracked, or alternatively still don’t know.
It’s funny, on one side you can still find people who run XP with Internet Explorer 7 because “reasons”, while on the other hand you can find people that just automatically upgrade to the “next new thing” no matter what.
It really just so happens that the Spyware parts of Microsoft Spyware 10 hit a distinct note with relatively tech-savvy people such as Gamers. Honestly, I personally wouldn’t even care if Microshit wasn’t trying to shove it up everyone’s ass with these ridiculously underhanded tactics.
it ain’t bullshit when it’s been showing results. go google it, games have literally only just started adopting dx12.
That’s not the point… U cant deny that MS is holding DX12 hostage in Win10
Yeah yeah console peasant
Listen here silly bltch, what would make u even A$$.ume I have a console? Smh, I have 3 PC’s: a x58, Z87 and Z170. I am way more ahead in the PC race than you. Get ur shlt together
Don’t bite mate, this place is full of these idiots. Just read through the comments on this article and you’ll see that the majority are from people you’d rather just ignore.
…not that what mobo you have has almost anything to do with how good your components are…

All I’m reading is QQ my hardware sucks and I dont wanna upgrade
I wouldn’t assume if I were u. More than likely I have better hardware than u
Says the guy making a assumption.
I’m saying there’s no reason to QQ about DX12 “holding us hostage” unless your hardware sucks. That’s not a request to rub PC hardware epeens.
Well my hardware doesnt suck, lmao. moving on
great, just in time for me pretty much finishing the game.
Just after I finished the game, and with no multi-player little reason to keep the game installed
Seems to be the norm nowadays.
Well so much with DX12 performance hype. So far only Ashes of Singularity showed “something” regarding framerate. The rest are a fking mess. And running on top hardware!!
Remember the hype, people getting excited that a card like GTX680 will be “revived” by DX12 awesome performance? haha what a joke that was. MS bunch of lying scumbags as usual, to sell their OS.
It’s not the API’s fault the devs are incapable or don’t have enough time to do it properly.
Upvote for this one. Devs like wildcard who are working on xbox one and pc versions at the same time have said that the low level work done on the consoles is what works and helps in coding for dx12 pc.
If MS is releasing games like Gears of War on their microsoft store platform I expect them to have quality control. That is one of my biggest gripes with steam.
We have only seen benchmarks for Ashes of the Singularity and that’s a AMD optimized title. The rest of the current dx12 titles haven’t been benchmarked against the DX11 version so I don’t know where you’re getting “The rest are a fking mess” from.
Well their plan now with windows 10 is that it will be 1 everlasting OS? So from now on they will make less money because their not planning any new OS in the future? As of before I had windows200, win-xp, vista, win7 etc… so many licences that had to be bought. but from win 10 and upwards there will be no more…(i still just run win7.)
If the DX12 patch is only made available for the gimped Win 10 store version…RIP.
Doing so would make no sense at all
Micro$haft can surprise you.
MS has nothing to do with ROTR. The only reason why it was shown off at the MS event was because DX12 is limited to Windows 10.
You people with your MS evil theories are ridiculous
Actions speak louder than words, broham.
We must ride to Brohan !
I highly doubt it.
Cannot wait. Kinda stopped playing the game because of the CPU bound scenarios preventing me from getting a constant 60FPS.
Let’s hope Square Enix or whoever handles the port can actually do a DX12 implementation that works.
No, that’s just how u took it… I wouldnt have said M$ is holding DX12 hostage if they were gonna release it for Win8 and Win7 but evidently they have no plans to release it for those platforms.
Lol you call it a cashgrab, and yet they gave everyone who owned 7/8 a FREE upgrade to 10. From 10 onwards it’s just updates and maybe big named updates like mac does, not whole new operating systems anymore. It’s better, 10 has become the standard. DX12 will never come to 7/8 and I’m glad it isn’t.
Please pay attn, I never said anything a/b money (i.e. cashgrab)… I never complained a/b 10 being free. All u’ve done is state the obvious… Tell me something idk. After all that talking u still avoided the point of my comment, smh. It makes no difference to me how u feel a/b Win10, more power to u.
“M$”
m$, ms = microsoft; really? wtf, man. what else would i be talking a/b. ur really acting immature
Wait, “patch incoming” is actually, “we are guessing a patch is incoming” now?
