Users Claim That Crimson Software Killed Their AMD GPUs, AMD Acknowledges Software Issue

AMD recently released the Crimson Software for its graphics cards, however it appears that this software is currently bugged. A number of users claimed that this software caused their GPUs to break down as it locked their fans at low speeds (10%-20%). And while we don’t know whether or not AMD will replace these cards that have been affected by it, it did acknowledge the software bug/issue.

AMD’s sub-reddit is currently full of posts from users, claiming that their GPUs have died due to the Crimson Software.

According to one member, the Crimson Software will lock your fan speed when resetting OverDrive settings. This means that PC gamers will have to turn it back on auto to prevent overheating.

In case you’re wondering, yes; a locked GPU fan speed can actually break down a GPU. We’ve encountered this issue with an NVIDIA GTX295 (our fan speed was locked at 30% and as a result of that, our card began to overheat and produce artifacts. When we discovered that, it was too late. Raising the GPU fan at top speeds did nothing as the damage was already done).

AMD acknowledged this issue and claimed that it will release a hotfix tomorrow.

  1. I haven’t encountered that issue but I also set my GPU fan to run at a manually set speed of 60% so maybe that’s why.

    1. Same. I have task manager, Core Temp and Afterburner open on my second monitor. At any point I can see my CPU temp, GPU temp, VRAM usage, CPU usage, RAM usage.

    2. Personally, I always upgrade to an already outdated driver every once in a while. This was the first time I downloaded a patch the day it came out and now I regret it. Back to only installing proven drivers.

        1. No, I noticed no issues with fan speed or anything on my r9 280. I’m just saying, using current drivers seems like a needless risk.

        1. and my hardware components never go above 45C in full load, thus they do not deteriorate in time. Anyway you must be one of those as.sholes that contradict other people for the fun of it.

          1. Well your comment sounded cheeky and it was as if you were bragging, hence my response so chill dude.

          2. Bragging about watercooling? Dafuq, there’s nothing to brag about, I’ve been doing this for years. Seeing 2 people upvote you, that’s sad as f’

          3. Some people botch watercooling and end up frying vrms. Not saying it’s your case but watercooling doesn’t bulletproof you from this kind of overheat. DEPENDING on how you watercooled it.

  2. I hope this is not true because AMD has just started to get a good reputation flowing with driver performance and they been coming out of the shadows of having bad drivers that to me for the last year and a half has all been Nvidia fanboy propaganda

    1. Something similar happened with GTX 400 and 500 cards back in 2013…and Ryan Shrout from PCper even admitted that AMD’s drivers use to be horrible.

        1. The issue was with higher-end Fermi cards where the entire system would crash if you attempted to run any 3D applications and rolling back the driver made no difference. AMD users at least have a chance to save their GPU(s).

  3. Hmm, no problems with my R280X 1050/1550 fans set to Auto (in Moded Trixx, in my Mega Cloud BTW)
But most important is that Crimson (for me) is the Best Driver to date !
In every game i play i see Big difference +7FPS in Min. only in SoM Goty 1920:1440 90Hz (Ultra noAA)
Also BF4 P Mantle is OK, AC:Syndicate NP, GRID AutoSp. Premium NP, and many More.
The bigest gain was in HoMM VII ! almost 27FPS ! (maby is combined with 1.5 patch dunno)
I read about problems with Fans but is Sapphire New Tixx Bug not Crimson -> there is Thread in Guru3D. Peace

  4. I remember when an Nvidia driver update corrupted my WindForce GTX 580 back in 2013 and I went back and forth with Gigabyte throughout that entire summer until I received a replacement WindForce GTX 770.

      1. I purchased a brand-new WindForce GTX 980 out of appreciation to Gigabyte, sold it on Ebay, and then moved on to a Titan X hybrid as 1440p is too much for a GM204.

  5. Amd at its finest… maybe if you live in usa, you dont give a f about this, cuz you can rma.
But what about people outside usa. Its a pain… how can this happens… almost 2016. For god sake. I mean… it looks like they are not bothering testing a crap…
    Its so disrespectful, amd drivers…

    1. It’s been like that for a long time in many different spheres of technology. Hardware is good and software is coded by yon-pon-don in india and they’re just not the best and don’t give a damn because they got the contract for 1$.

  6. the gpu fan speed cant cause damage the gpu, because the chip itself has a trothling temperature and then lower the core clock, at least the nvidia gpus have this.

  7. Nvidia GPUs will lower clocks when temp is too high, if that doesn’t help the driver and a chip on the gpu will cut the power of the graphics card until the pc is restarted. This is another new reason why I didn’t buy an AMD card in my entire life lol.

  8. Oh dear, suddenly the consequences of buggy games seem very small in comparison to what could happen when we have a bug like this in the GPU drivers.

  9. I have problems with 4K & Overdrive while using crimson drivers
And still they DID NOT FIX FUKCING OPENCL “Out of memory bug”

    1. Saw you in that Reflex tournament on zlive. What happened? Was it your connection like Shpuld said? The stream itself was lagging so it was hard to tell.

      1. He is HAL_9000(with underscore) I’m HAL 9000 true evil AI 😉
I also play Quake1/3/CPMA & Reflex on pro level, but but under different name/alias on tournaments(HAL 9000 is my old old old forum name). It was not me(but you have also watched my matches probably, I use different aliases for different things on internet for personal & privacy reasons, i wont tell you my Quake/Reflex alias, but it is common to see me on tournaments & youtube videos).
I respect HAL_9000, he is awesome player, colleague and basically a legend!
I think net connection is to blame for what happened. He had some problems with it before.

        1. You’re actually another Quake pro, not the one playing as HAL, and you won’t tell me who? Get outta town. You omitted QL from your list so there’s a good chance I don’t know you after all. I only started following Quake things a few years ago.

          1. Yeah,Im from the OldSchool Era( I was q3pro, not anymore, now i’m older and not so agile anymore), I don’t play QL, I don’t like dumbed down changes & game mechanics,( I respect what ID/Bethesda was trying to do with QL on pro level, but IMO they fukced it up when they modified/dumbed core elements from Q3 &CPMA) I’m currently playing & creating maps for Quake1 & Reflex

          2. How was it dumbed down? I never played Q3. I only know weapon damages were changed on rail, shaft and possibly MG. Rocket radius nerfed maybe? But I don’t know how whichever changes were made lowered the skill ceiling.

          3. Auto Jump (really ID really??? -_- ) , Weapon Loadouts, Changes to weapons, damage & physics, And No fukcing Gibbing & Blood. I hate those things. Not to mention NO MOD SUPPORT (so no awesome mods like generations arena for QL users). Try to install & play Vanilla+Cpma you will see what I’m talking about.Quake live is n00b friendly game, Veteran players mostly hate changes made to weapons, gameplay&physics
But welcome changes are better UI, waaaay improved changes to Netcode,leaderboards/career(hell yeah), transition from TGA based textures to PNG system (faster engine) And new game-modes.But, I still prefer Vanilla Quake+CPMA over QL. And I really really like to play Generations Arena with my friends

          4. Autohop? Nothing wrong with that. What, do you want people to miss simple jumps like the double stair thing on Sinister, next to rail? And the diagonal piece trick jumps add to the movement mechanics so those are good.

Loadouts are out since 10 buck price tag.

No mods, yeah, a shame. Although you can now play on a bunch more maps again, or even custom maps. I’m not quite sure. Servers are in community hands so I think you could run any map you want.

Physics – that’s the kind of thing I don’t know much about. Looks like CPMA is generally faster in every regard but was Q3 that fast? Old fatal1ty matches don’t look that fast.

And by vanilla Quake are you referring to “Quakeworld”? CPMA is a mod so that was never played at quakecon or anything. That’s not representative of Quake at large, no matter how many people play it.

  10. So that explains why the the fan on my Sapphire HD 7870 never passes 30% regardless of temperature. Had to manually set it at a constant 60% to not fry the GPU. Also the V-sync option in the control panel is still broken and the frame limiter incorporated in there makes the game stutter if you set it to any value other than disabled.

I noticed some performance improvements in some games, but damn this is emberassing. For shame AMD, for shame.
