UPDATE:

Ninja Theory has sent a press release with some additional details about Hellblade.

Hellblade tells the story of Senua, a Celtic warrior who is left traumatised by a Viking invasion. This third person action game, being developed for PlayStation 4 and PC, will follow Senua’s journey into a vision of hell that is the manifestation of her own mental illness.

In order to ensure a sensitive and accurate portrayal of the subject, Ninja Theory has been working closely with Psychiatrist and Professor of Health and Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, Paul Fletcher, as well as arranging to consult with people who have experience of mental health difficulties.

Paul Fletcher said:

“True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels. Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character’s experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.”

Hellblade is being developed by a small team of 15 people under a development model Ninja Theory call Independent AAA. This approach sees the game being created with all the creative freedom of ‘indie’ development, but with the production values of AAA blockbuster games.

Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Director at Ninja Theory, added:

“In Hellblade we are pursuing creative independence in order to explore a compelling subject matter and gaming experience that would not be possible under the current retail model.  In movie terms, this would be a quality independent film, not a Hollywood blockbuster.  Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high quality game at around half the price of retail games.”

The project is supported by the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation which aims to build a greater public understanding of science, and in particular health.

Iain Dodgeon, Creative Partnerships Manager at the Wellcome Trust, concluded:

“More and more, games have an exciting and innovative role to play in giving us new perspectives on health and mental health challenges. Rather than being a didactic game teaching us about psychosis, Hellblade allows us to explore it through the creation of a compelling and complex character, and the world that she inhabits.”

    1. Hes right to though, if thats in game FOV then it is terrible. Hopefully the final game wont be like that but in the meantime if b*tching about it is what it takes to get it changed then im b*tching too.

      1. if are gonna **** about it without praising anything you find positive, then you are being unfair. either that or you didn’t find anything positive about it all, and in that case you should just never bother with Hellblade articles.

        1. Its not unfair at all, that is how criticism works. You criticized me without giving any praise. So if you dont find anything nice about it why dont you take your own advice and ignore it?

Thats right, because none of what you said makes any sense.

What should he have done to please you then, should he be silent and let it go on as if no one cares? Should he thank the developers for the horrendously low fov?

…or should he say something about it publicly and who knows maybe people will agree and the developers will at least take note?

    2. Lol pleb, 35degree fov is low even by console standards.

What they showed looks mostly like a walking simulator.

I’m sure the combat will be like another ryse-son of rome.

      1. consoles never had standards. since this is not a PC first game, i never expected them to care for these matters. as long as it is optimized i am fine with it and the atmosphere of this game looks great.

  1. Enslaved was fantastic and I really liked DMC. So far, I liked every game by Ninja Theory and Hellblade looks like something right up my alley. Looking forward to it. And thank god for a PC version…

    1. Absolutely; every single offering that I’ve played from the studio has been great and incredibly focused with no additional frills (DmC and Enslaved).
They will do well with Hellblade I’m sure

    2. I really really really liked dmc, i want a sequel so bad, i liked the universe. Anyway we all know how that turned out.

  2. The gameplay’s looking interesting and innovative for a hack n slash but the story is questionable. So it basically all takes place in her mind?

    1. I think that could be really interesting, diving into a broken mind can be a really great premise/setting . Just hoping that it doesn’t end up being like that movie “Sucker Punch”.

  3. Looks like my kind of Game. Setting seems dark and atmospheric- which goes a long way in selling me on it. The FOV might be a little wierd but it’s hardly a deal- breaker.
