A couple of days ago, Ian Bell – Slightly Mad Studios’ boss – claimed that DX12 would bring a 30-40% performance boost in Project CARS. Ian Bell wrote this on an Xbox One thread, suggesting that this boost was for Microsoft’s current-gen console. Well, it appears this is not the case as Ian Bell clarified the performance boost PC and console players can expect from this new API.
As Ian Bell said, this 30-40% was for the PC version of Project CARS (in DX12 mode). Console gamers should expect a 7% (or slightly more) performance boost from DX12. Still, the performance gains won’t be close to those achieved on the PC.
As Ian claimed, Slightly Mad Studios will be now focusing on the hardest hit areas on circuits (this is mainly art optimisation). As we’ve indicated in our PC Performance Analysis, there are circuits that have a huge performance hit for really unknown reasons (either due to NVIDIA’s drivers or due to various optimization issues).
Later on, Ian revealed that the DX12 patch for Project CARS will most probably released this year, though nothing is set on stone as of yet.
Last but not least, Ian claimed that slower quad-core CPUs – on the PC front – will most probably see a 40% performance boost due to DX12. This performance boost is similar to what most developers have reported in the past, so this is good news for all those with weaker PC configs.

Actually, in PC, you can actually get that (by comparison). Digital’s Foundry build already outperforms PS4 in the Witcher 3. Give DX12 and those 40 fps will go to 60. That is great for the PC mustard race.
PC is the way to go. Both consoles are hopelessly underpowered.
One side (The xbots) are coming to terms with it, the other side (The sonytards) still think they are getting ferrari performance when they bought actually bought a 1999 Dodge Neon but the put side skirts and a spoiler on so it’s “Faster”.
It would be great if the ‘big’ games released during this DX11-DX12 transition would get a DX12 patch too. Seems like at least Witcher 3 may get such a patch.
I bet GTA V gets one. Especially if R* wants to do VR where high framerate is essential. I wouldn’t be shocked if it gets both official VR support for Vive and OR and a Direct X 12 update at E3. No other game really stands out as meriting getting a DX12 patch. Maybe Shadow Of Mordor or Mortal Kombat X but I really doubt WB would bother. I doubt Ubi would go back to the well for Far Cry 4 and AC Unity either. I could see EA doing one for DA:I, Battlefield 4 and Hardline since Mantle support is dead, though.

Didn’t Nvidia leak that already? Still, It’s out June and Win 10 is out July so I wouldn’t be shocked. MS said the first new PC game shipping with DX 12 was Fable Legends but they never said anything about games already shipped. I’d say it would be a good candidate though.

Xbox one has 50% less power no amount of software will fix that
XBOX has 50% less GPU’s CUs (i think) which is not the same thing, it also has ESRAM which can offload some routines to get pretty big gain, though usage is very tricky.
Yeah what i meant has extremely outdated memory for GPU access to be considered a AAA game console and it has 50% less GPU shaders making the system quite underpowered compared to a PS4 and yes we all know how much even a 400$ computer could beat a PS4 in most cases and well still function as a PC and get amazing steam sales like i just did today(bought whole bunch of games for like 3$ a piece)

There’s no way a $400 PC could outperform an Xbox. I’m not a console person, at all – I don’t own a console and I build and use PC’s for a living. A PC is a general-purpose machine, whereas everything in the Xbox is specifically built for gaming.

Drop the CPU for a pentium unlock edition or a quad core APU should save 20$ on the CPU the board will be around the same price drop the heat-sink on the Pentium and use stock OC to 4.0Ghz(most can i built) then get a 750Ti or buy a used I3 and used GPU from ebay do this a lot to.
Sorry man, you’re not taking something into consideration: developers have entire teams of people optimizing their game for that exact system. If you build your own computer you’ll also need an operating system, Windows in particular, and that’s a bloated mess. The Xbox OS is streamlined and optimized, once again, for that EXACT hardware configuration. And not only this but it uses a unified CPU+GPU architecture, so it’s optimized for hardware that is fundamentally different in design.
Your theoretical build looks good on paper, and can probably crank out good numbers, but it’s not going to beat a highly optimized XBox running a highly optimized game for the same price. That’s simply the reality of it. Not that I would ever buy an Xbox.

A dreamcast was 640×480 output on 95% of its titles. A PS2 only had 5% of titles at that output with most at 512×240.
Should be a Gamecube/PS2 comparison since PS2 was the weakest console that gen and only had 10% more theoretical power than the DC (Which was eroded since the assembler used for PS2 was garbage). But you seem to lack logic, Josh :^)

There’s a looooong list of things a “personal” computer makes possible that is impossible on a console. This is true. Especially with the advent of Steam Machines which were meant to alleviate the overhead associated with DirectX/Windows and bring better performance to PC gaming.
Now that M$FT is touting the DX12 and Windows 10 horn, seems Valve’s Steam Machines have faded into obscurity as M$FT is essentially doing what Valve meant to do in the first place. A shame really as I wanted Valve to eat away at Windows relevance to gamers. Oh well.
Steam machines can still take off, if they are ever truly released or the OS is ever finished. The great part about Steam Machines is that they’re basically consoles that you can upgrade. To a casual gamer that’s pretty much the best of both worlds.
Buuuuut, the problem is still with exclusive games. You get games like The Last of Us that only come to console and everyone wants it. Until Valve starts getting exclusives that everyone needs to play, consoles will always have the edge.
Valve will need to invest in some exclusives and I’m not sure that’s the direction they want to take the company, especially because it’s risky to up and change your business model when they’re raking in the money just being the middle-man distributor/ server maintenance experts.
Now that I think of it, I wonder if Valve’s SteamOS was just an elaborate ruse to get Microsoft to fix their sh*t. I mean, this DID force Microsoft to finally debug/ update DirectX, and that will be hugely beneficial for gamers as time goes on, and really all they needed to do was create some prototypes of a controller and Photoshop some SteamOS concepts. It could have just been an elaborate hoax!.

There is no generation leap on PC and there is no games, two main problems.
Generation leap is important. Look at BF3 and BF4, how much better BF4 looks (on the same PC, of course). New consoles have 10x more power then previous ones and that’s important and that’s why we’re seeing new things now, but new GTX Titan or another high–end GPU will never be at least somewhat important for gaming because nobody cares about it.
Huge fragmentation in PC gaming holds industry back too. Developers can’t utilize each and every bit of horsepower in high–end PC GPUs, because they need to be sure that game will run on lower–end cards like GTX 750 Ti and so on.
Another huge thing is exclusive games. Look at Forza Horizon 2 or DRIVECLUB–it’s impossible to do the same on PC hardware. Look at The Order: 1488, why there is no such beautiful games on PC? Exclusives are driving industry forward, and PC is just holding it back.
PC is a machine for casual gamers to play Facebook games, things like Solitaire and ‘Press LMB to win YOBA games like Counter–Strike, but instead PC gamers are posing it like a gaming platform, which is simply wrong. Until it’s finally dead, I’m worried for the state of industry.

PML Before the PS1 and Xbox started releasing games with anything close to decent graphics PC gamers were playing those games for at least FIVE YEARS! When the PS2 and Xbox came out they got games and graphics that PC players had seen years before and already completed.
Since then consoles have become more popular and devs have concentrated more on them for the easy (rip off) money (a console version of a game always costs more than the PC yet looks worse) which has meant development for PC games has become stale and crippled so that console owners don’t get upset at the difference in quality.
As soon as the PS4 and Xbox One were released they were OUTDATED and although we can get slightly better games for the next 5 years they will STILL hold pc’s back.
It’s consoles that are ruining the industry with their ridiculous lifespan and crappy low spec hardware so it’s also console gaming that should die 😛

Or PC titles like Shadow Warriors and Planetside2 also ported to the “next-gen” yet still look and run like sh1t compared to the years old PC versions?. We are just getting these features now because of the consoles?. Don’t talk out your a$$ console shill, PC gamers have been treated with Directx11 quality visuals and all the enhanced features it brought to games around 4 years before you ever seen a Directx11 quality game on console with the launch of XB1 or PS4. Also Battlefield 3 had the full PC experience with far, far better multiplayer , 60fps , DX11 visuals and was running @ 1080p or above before you got your gimped 1600x900p Battlefield 4 that lurches along betwen 60fps and 40fps constantly changing how responsive the controls are from minute to minute as well as horrific judder. Also lets talk about “exclusives” in the last few months PC has had ARMA3 expansion, Assetto Corsa , Total War Attila, Cities Skylines, Pillars of Eternity , Kerbal Space Program to name a few. All of these games are great and not cinematic shallow trash catering to lowest common denominator. Not to mention far better third party games, you know third party that makes up 99.999% of your library on console but far better on PC.

You serious? You really serious with the order? The order had to use letter boxing and capped a framerate at 30 FPS and was a rail shooter. It was beautiful for being used on an outdated platform (ps4) but it cannot compare to many many games on the PC, you just don’t know about those games because they don’t get the hype you so easily latch onto.
Im not saying they will not make any sacrifices at all, but it doesn’t make this comparison fair, comparing two very different scenes in each case with different time of day, LOD, distance view, etc. “Six month later” gameplay you referring to was actually one of the best visual gameplay I have ever seen, honestly. Again I am not saying there is no downgrade, but I could name almost any PS title with worse visuals than Uncharted will clearly have.

You do know that picture of Drake is not real right? It’s best case lighting, i.e perfect lighting setup as Naughty Dog said and no that’s not in-game or anything like what the game will look like.
Those E3 trailers are shown on high end PCs and then ended up with great downgrade. Consoles has always been about false advertising and hype. Hardware limitation will never bring that level of quality and detail.

The consoles are nearly 2 years old and already there is 40 so called console exclusives that are either XB1 exclusive or PS4 exclusive yet the PC happens to have the definitive versions so really if you were to only own one platform then PC gives you access to 95% of the whole gaming industry. Why do people always need to turn stuff like this into some pc vs consoles slugfest. I can enjoy both, and yes pc have higher graphics settings if you got proper hardware, but truth be told, when u play a few meters from the tv you aren’t going to see much difference. Also if the pc elitists would buy games instead of purating them, there would be more bug budget AAA games on the pc.

if i am correct , DX 12 optimizes CPU more than gpu , so weaker CPUs will be the most benefited(of course there are a few gpu tech too) .Mostly , i think that would make better ports!
It is more like multi core CPUs that will benefit the most. DX is poorly optimized and uses mostly just one CPU core. There are more technical issues being improved but that one is a good one.

i just wish we could at least get back to the previous decade’s state, a time when console games actually were games suitable for controllers and consoles, not genres that actually are better on PC but are forced on consoles (RPG, Shooter etc). this is why everybody loves Nintendo. they still make games for consoles. they are not trying to steal from other platforms.

Good. Even with the new drivers, Rigs with AMD processors still have major framerate issues due to the bottlenecks. DX12 support should really open things up. Unless you have a 1.6ghz octo-core tied to garbage console hardware. Then you are screwed :^).

Have you not played Project CARS? CPU bottlenecks galore on AMD Processors. Same with Witcher 3. Even GTA V has them. DX 12 should remedy it.

I’m thinking it’s more sinister than that. What if they gimped DX11 performance intentionally in order to sell XBoxes? I mean, this is Microsoft – they have the money to debug, test, and optimize DX11, but it seems only half-baked, like they weren’t even trying.
The benefits of gimping DX11 are two fold: sell more XBox crap, plus they can THEN entice gamers to buy the new Windows to get DX12.

It’s strange to hear some kind of conspiracy theory from you, but whatever, I think DX10 and DX11 were created with only one purpose: to sell Vista and 7. So, yeah, they weren’t even trying.
Microsoft interests shifted from PC gaming to console gaming probably around 10 years ago, and everything that doesn’t benefit Xbox gaming has no interest to them.
They trying to push DX12 because X1 is kind of a outsider on console market, AND because they know that Vulcan is coming. If not that, I think DX12 would be the same crap as DX10.
We were discussing this below. Some surmise that DX12 is Microsoft’s answer to the Steam Machine. It’s plausible.

I’m just theorizing. The truth likely lies as a combination of many different factors. Calling it a ‘conspiracy theory’ is nothing more than an attempt undermine the discussion or analysis. In this case you’re trying to make it personal, which is weird – what does any of this have to do with me? Focus, man.
I think Steam Machines (as a piece of hardware) will have different competitors. Vulcan will work under every system except probably consoles (Windows, Linux, tablets, phones, etc.). They building something really great, and IF it turns out well, it will be a great competitor to DX12.
I’m not sure what to say more about DX11. From a gamer point of view, it wasn’t groundbreaking. But I don’t think they gimped it intentionally, they just wanted to sell Windows 7 and throw a bone to PC gamers (same as with DX10), and it worked out splendidly.
With their resources they could do so much more, but this “so much more” won’t give them money. They even built a console cheaper than PS4, and the last time I checked Microsoft didn’t had any financial problems (unlike Sony).

GOW 2 and GT 4’s only innovations were using DVD format. They ran at half the resolution of most Dreamcast games. I’m pretty sure the DC could have done it at 640×480, Josh Moron :^)
I’m not sure how DX12 is going to benefit older CPU’s. I have a Q9550, but I’m pretty sure I can’t install Windows 8 or 10 because I need the new BIOS standard, which is impossible with my LGA 775 socket motherboard.
Really? Thank you – I need to do some more research! I tried to put Windows 8 on my dad’s computer and it wouldn’t let me, but I put it on my brother in-law’s UEFI-based computer and it worked just fine.
Ha! Thanks again – that is probably exactly the problem – I was trying to install using a flash drive (I build computers but I stopped using DVD drives in my builds).
