CD Projekt RED on The Witcher 3 Downgrade-ation, Game Delay, Horse Slow-Mo & Finishers

Over at the official The Witcher 3 forum, CD Projekt RED’s developers have been answering a lot of interesting questions. CD Projekt RED has shed some light on that awful Frost effect that drove everyone crazy and started all the talks about the game’s “downgrade-ation”, the game’s delay, as well as whether players can turn off all the finishing moves.

First things first; the Frost effect has been replaced with a higher quality one. As CD Projekt RED’s Benzenzimmern said, that frost effect is already changed. Moreover, that character’s textures are promised to be ‘as sharp as ever’.

Later on, CD Projekt RED’s MilezZ said that their environment artists has tinkered a bit with all of the brick walls in order to further improve them (visually). MilezZ also added:

“Of course we keep going over assets and polishing them, it’s among the reasons we pushed the game back – we see this as much as a bug as, say, a gameplay glitch. I can not really give you a clear answer as to the case with the bricks. They did look very out of place though so it is very likely that they were on someone’s task list and had just been bumped up in priority, because it was shown that it was seemingly more apparent than assumed.”

CD Projekt RED’s developers have also shed some light on the game’s delay, and whether it was caused by a particular platform. As CD Projekt RED’s TheEvilChris said, the game was delayed because it was not ready yet, and not because of any specific version.

“When we polish a game, we fix bugs and issues for all 3 platforms, PC and consoles.”

Benzenzimmern also confirmed what MilezZ said, adding that CD Projekt RED postponed because it had to polish the game itself, no matter the platform. Moreover, Benzenzimmern claimed that this scene looks much better in the latest build of the game.

Last but not least, MilezZ confirmed that gamers will be able to turn finishers off, and explained why the team decided to implement a slow-mo effect while riding a horse.

“Actually, you can turn the finishers off in the game options.

Regarding “Horse Slow-Mo” – it is not meant as a sort of finisher. On the horse, when you hold the button for fast attack, it slows down time when you are close to an enemy. This allows you to line up your attack a bit better for a few split seconds. The window for this is relatively short, as it sort of wears off as soon as you get too close to the enemy.

Consider this: horse combat without the slow down didn’t play too well, since the horse movement is quite fast. The high speed, when testing, got even more problematic on horse to horse combat, so the short slow down window (again, only activated when holding the button within a certain range of an enemy) helps a lot here.”

    1. It always distracted me when I saw how Geralt get intimate with everything that moves, despite high feelings to several women in his life. Plus he talks about morality occasionally and turn it all to trash with his absolute promiscuity.
Aaaand yet I dropped in those houses every now and then.

      1. it’s not geralt, it’s you. after all it’s an rpg, you can do it or you can ignore it. it’s a choice

        1. to be fair as far as i know he has some side romances in the books and in the new comic he bangs a succubus. he is no Aragorn but he doesn’t bang everything that moves either. he is somewhere in the middle. by medieval standards he is completely fine.

by the way having side romances or more in life is normal but in stories that is different because in stories not all the details are fed to us so whatever detail we get is magnified.

        2. Yes, that’s right. Options is a good thing.
I’ll get angry at everyone who come out with demands of options removal.
Still, there was that adventure in the first game. Princess Adda, spoilt child and Geralt the monster slayer, running errands on her whims for some banging. I did the quest not because of roleplaying, I did it because I was curious. And younger. And in the end all this felt sooo wrong, I just reloaded game and pretended that I nener did such a thing.
I kinda admire that game make me emotionally react in such way. Speaks about the emmersion.
          CDPR are cool.

        3. Uhm.. Geralt’s Reputation proceeds him.. He is known to be quite the “Ladies Man” in the Lore. It is just being nice, but basically he bangs anything that walks and has a v**ina.. He doesn’t see Love as binding him to one individual.. Intimacy is not Sex.. They are two different things.. It is only the feelings that matter to Geralt.

      2. thats what witchers do though homie. go take that sjw sh*t elsewhere or play a leftist game like gone home.

  1. Anyone who looks at some of the early screens and trailers should be able to recognize the downgrade. But the game still looks very good.

      1. The new gameplay looks worse than the first gameplay glimpse we got of it. It still looks damn great but the downgrade is clearly visible and you’re only fooling yourself if you think it wasn’t downgraded.

        1. No he’s not fooling himself, it’s just you who’s the victim of doubt. Not every studio goes down the path of downgrade like Ubish*t, specially a studio that intentionally dropped previous gen consoles in order to realize their ambitions. Those initial screenshots/footage had a sharpness and color saturation filter applied that made everything look “WoW” we always do this when we apply HDR and LumaSharpen filters using SweetFX but maybe in actual game they didn’t worked well with other features or caused some stuff to look worse so they removed it, it doesn’t mean a downgrade.

          1. Do you really think it looks as good as it did previously? I’m just gonna tell you to go watch the E3 gameplay trailer again and earlier gameplay and if you think the new gameplay videos look as good you must get your eyes checked. Seriously, the vegetation looks completely different, it looks flat now and less dense and lower quality. Textures look slightly more washed out but not a noticeable difference to most people and then there is the clear difference with the magic effects and even a lot of stuff looks to have reduced poly count which is immediately noticeable if you watch the gameplay video of the first 15 minutes. It still looks great like I said but just because it’s a game that people will love and from a great developer with great games, it still doesn’t mean we should just ignore the fact that this is a clear downgrade. Not a massive one, but still pretty clear.

          2. CDPR fanboys won’t admit their beloved developer would do something like this. Even less so after pre-ordering at $60.

          3. The game is available at 10% discount on gog.com which means 54$ and if you own both previous games then you’ll get a 20% discount which means around 48$.

          4. I didn’t said it looks as good as the initial screenshots, I only mean that this doesn’t necessarily mean a downgrade, why ? because the game is not running on highest settings. It could be that the initial screenshots came with the highest possible settings but now CDPR is hiding it in order to keep parity with consoles.

Also it cannot be denied that those old screenshots have some weird amount of sharpness which might look great in a still screenshot but will drive you crazy if you see it in motion.

          5. ‘Doesn’t necessarily mean’ ‘It could be that’ You’re just speculating here about different possibilities about why it could look slightly worse, but apparently for you (and a bunch others) a downgrade is 100% out of the question. Why?

Disclaimer: Personally I think W3 looks fine even if they downgrade it, what busts my balls is blind fanboyism.

Anyway, people are bitching about graphics when Witcher’s weakest point was always the combat. From the footage it looks like they kept the same s**t formula from W2.

          6. To be honest I was going to avoid giving you an answer on this because recently I had a similar argument with another guy here and it kept going forever but fortunately CDPR released another batch of 4k screenshots coming from the PC version, see them yourself and judge whether it looks better than before or not ? like I said many times before the old screenshots only had tons of sharpness and color saturation which made them ultra crisp and vibrant.

Additionally all people complaining about vegetation should know that yes it looks different than before but another difference that they fail to see is that previous vegetation was all static or had scripted movement like most of the games while the vegetation we have now has full collision detection and they react to each and every movement dynamically, this thing is costly not only on consoles but also on PC so instead of having beautiful but unrealistically static vegetation they went with slightly less beautiful but realistic and alive vegetation, this is not a downgrade but a design choice that is better and something we haven’t seen in any game before.

People complaining about missing tessellation or POM should see the last screenshot which speaks for itself.

And Marcin Momot already said that these are still on high only so expect ultra to be jaw dropping.

          7. Well, this was kind of expected if you have followed their interviews, you will understand they are trying really hard not to offend the console base, so parity btwn pc and consoles with PC having slight extras were a given.
Well, atleast we have an awesome dedicated user base which will always mod games to bring them up to the glory they deserve.

    1. The older footage looks somewhat worse than the new footage. They’ve definitely improved things over time.

        1. Hey, I know the screen captures aren’t the best, but they’re still clear enough to see that the game has been upgraded not downgraded.

    2. Yup, it still looks amazing and much better than gameplay videos from 2-3 months ago. 15 min gameplay footage and new 4 mins trailer look amazing.

      1. Looks better than videos from 2-3 months ago but worse than the first gameplay trailer as well as the first in game screenshots.

        1. I think you might be looking at those old screens with some rather rose tinted glasses, most of them reaaaaally arent that great

  2. Haha CDPR just cant win, they optimize so people can run it – people scream downgrade!
They dont optimize – and it would be ACU 2.0..

    1. Thing is if they wouldn’t optimize it, you’d be able to run it smoothly on max in what, 2 or 3 years? Look at TW2, it came out 4 years ago and there’s 1K people playing it on Steam at the moment (which is 4am) and the game looks gorgeous.
I won’t say it has been downgraded until I see it on ultra myself on May 19th, but the screenshot randir14 shared above looks so so much better than the most recent footage we have seen…

      1. I’m sure the outcry that would take place if people couldnt run it even on high end rigs would be 100x worse

I’ve been following TW3 very closely since it was announced, and im not sure ‘downgrade’ is correct, it just looks very different to early screenshots, not necessarily worse, but very different (I’d day more slightly more stylistic rather than realistic)

      2. But it really does not. It may have turned into a joke, but first of all the lighting is completely different. The textures are actually pretty bad and the foliage is low quality. Only things making the pic look good are the insane reflections on the water, the blurring effect making subpar armor texture look fine and overall darker color pallette.

There is no “downgrade” in terms of anything, as even lighting is objectively as good or superior as shown in IGNs 15min gameplay. The color pallette is just more vivid.

    2. Some could run anything they could throw at us. If they wanted to optimize- great. Make lower poly, lower resolution assets from the original high quality assets but leave those as an option for the Titan X crowd. That’s does not appear to be what they did- instead scrapping the high quality assets entirely for a one size fits all approach in the name of optimization. Thing is- I would have been perfectly content with a future proof game that might be hard to run completely maxed out now. Knowing in five years the ultra settings will be the new lowest common denominator. Computer hardware is only going to get better. The only way I could understand forcing lower quality assets on everyone is if the high quality was causing huge memory leaks. The better solution in that instance would be better coding- most memory leaks can be fixed in my experience. All that being said the latest four minute video looks amazing. Still really looking forward to this game- I just wish the developers were a little more honest about the change in visuals, it’s plain to see. It’s inevitable some are going to like the old look better- whether you consider it a downgrade or no.

    3. Well, honestly I think its their joke of an engine that’s the problem, the witcher 2 runs still like somewhat sh*t on my AMD card, while crysis 3 runs pretty brilliantly with better visuals. They are good developers, but their programmers are either incompetent or the RED engine is just trash. And witcher 3 minimum requirements are higher than the hardware of PS4 while its is capable of running on Xbox one, and they said the PS4 runs at high-ultra tweak, while the minimum req for PC is greater than PS4 hardware.

  3. Yup, someone should have showed them this picture… that looked amazing.. wtf happened?

    1. I won’t get into details of what i do for a living, plus i rarely comment on anything on the internet, but believe this: I could point to you at least ten “graphic characteristics” on this screenshot that is very unfinished to be considered as a final render and much less to be set as “gold phase for a triple A title”. The term “downgraded” is been used for anything now from optimization to graphical changes. And let us be sincere here, this company promised us nothing regarding graphics, like they did with The Witcher 2 they just gradually has been showing us work in progress with the game. Hype and/or ignorance is a bitch sometimes i think. Cheers.

    2. Are you freaking blind? The new footage blows that screenshot away. Seriously, wtf do you think is so amazing in that screenshot? I mean it looks good, but we already saw the same area in the downwarren gameplay and it looks just as good. There’s stuff in the new trailer that blows that away.

  4. Looking at the poll and reading this article is not hard to see from
where they get the money. The funny thing is some people fall for it.
    Bicizzzzzz

  5. There are definitely missing/toned down effects. Maybe that’s why I didn’t feel awe when I saw the last trailer unlike when I saw the early 2014 trailers

    *Bloom is almost non existent
    *The lighting looks really bland
*Atmospheric feel is gone (maybe because of the bland lighting ?)
    *Didn’t see any godrays
*Fire effects are toned down. Not just the skill effects but also natural fires (the fire particles in the early trailers were awesome)

I made this observation by comparing Swords of Destiny and VGX trailer to the latest gameplay trailer. And no, I’m not comparing crappy youtube videos. I’m using gamersyde’s high quality direct feed videos which I kept to remind me to play W3 coz it looks gorgeous

      1. Yeah, and I’d bet you anything those cutscenes and levels are all in the game and look just as good.

        1. they look good, but different from the elder blood trailer. i cant put my finger on it whether is a downgrade or if it is on chaneed settings

      2. i dindnt see a large fire here though, anyway we just have a mont to wait and see. REMEMBER if CD projekt keeps its part of the deal, this is not ultra….*drools while imaging ultra settings*

      1. You must have been blinded by your “clear” youtube images so here

You know what effects I’m talking about right ? or do I still have to point it to you ?

    1. Bland lighting? Did you get this confused with some other Game? The lighting is brilliant in Witcher 3.

Bloom and god rays have been shown in all of the footage including this newest one. It’s super obvious. You must not know what you are talking about.

And just because they didn’t show burning buildings in this trailer doesn’t mean they are not in the game.

      1. The new lighting may be good as it is but if you compare it to the early lighting, no it’s not

Show me “1” bloom effect on the latest trailer that rivals those of the early 2014 trailers or show me 1 godray effect in the latest trailer

I’m not just talking about the burning building. I’m also talking about the fire particles flying when there’s fire. Wait for my pics to be approved so you can see what I’m talking about —__—

        1. Dude I’ve seen all the trailers and screenshots and I know what scene you are talking about. It looks cool, but nothing at all outside of the capabilities of this engine. I’ll make a bet with you that is still in the game and looks just as good.

Its like the idiots that claimed that the semi volumetric clouds were removed from the game and…lo and behold now there they are in the latest trailer. Just don’t jump to silly conclusions.

          1. Eh 0_0 ? so what now ? where’s the bloom effects and godrays that you’re talking about ? weren’t they supposed to be super obvious ?

          2. It’s not because of that. You won’t see any godrays at all no matter the TOD

          3. Don’t be stupid. Someone already showed you a screenshot with godrays in it.

I’ve watched the trailer and it’s filled with godrays in lots of places.

          4. Uhh … I’ve commented this before the pic of the guy appeared that’s why his reply didn’t also mention that there’s already an image of godrays —__— . I’m not someone like you who doesn’t admit when he’s proven wrong

        2. You’re completely wrong about the lighting. There are lots of scenes with bloom and god rays in the newer footage. You clearly don’t know what you are talking about. The newer videos look better than that old gameplay trailer, minus the particular cutscenes that can’t be compared directly until we have the final game. But as far as how the gameplay looks and just the game in general the new footage is the best looking yet.

          1. So where is it then ? show me a pic. I think you’re mistaking the compression effect of the videos in your images as godrays and bloom —__—

Here are my “clear” images coz it seems like the approval will take a while

These are from the latest trailer ….

            http://postimg. org/gallery/23vgiimck/a91934c4/

and these are from early 2014 trailers

            http://postimg. org/gallery/n1khepwk/b0ebe358/

      1. Fair enough. There’s godray. But overall excellent lighting ? stop being stupidly blind —__— . The lighting is being altered by the compression of the video that makes it look better. Look for the uncompressed 850MB trailer of the latest gameplay trailer and compare it to that. Geez. What’s with you people’s obsession with low quality stuff —__—

        1. Are you actually arguing the game looks better because of video compression? Wow, that’s a new one

Everyone come! Gather around and laugh at the retard! Ha-Ha, retard!

  6. I said on IGN about the bricks. The style of bricks weren’t invented until after the industrial revolution. They are modern so to speak.

Modern bricks look very out of place in a fantasy game where people are still using swords.

    1. Yeah I noticed that too. They should have used something else there. Not a huge deal but they shouldi done better.

    2. Hate to break it to you- the Witcher is a fantasy world. They already have things like advanced blasting furnaces- experiments with electricity, research in Cancer etc… This game is not meant to be a period piece.

      1. Hate to break it to you, but the devs agree with me.

They are changing the brick textures for final build.

  7. Come on, sir expert on witchers, don’t call me that. I’m not about swj or whatever hysteria is going on the internets right now.

    1. Collector’s Editions are always expensive. My point ? 60$ is not mentioned anywhere so where did you got that price in your last post ? pretty much any sane PC gamer will support a good dev like CDPR, it doesn’t make us fanboy or anything.

      1. It’s $60 at GameStop and Amazon but who cares? Pre-ordering anything at $50 or $60 is equally stupid.

And who said there was anything wrong with supporting developers??

  8. I personally think the game looks fantastic and am very skeptical about all the shouts of downgrade as it seems every game recently have been tarred with that brush. Granted most of them have deserved it but I’m very on the fence about The Witcher having got one. I think when people get their hands on it hopefully all this talk of downgrade is proved to be false. If it turns out to be true, yeah I will be disappointed but as long as the game is well optimized and is fun to play i’ll be more than happy.

  9. True and fair enough. But if they felt the original visuals were not polished why show them in the first place? I get optimization, as I mod games a lot so I frequently cause bugs that eat up memory or corrupt the depth buffer etc… Still having an across the board approach to optimization is usually a bad idea. Also- as much as I love CD Projekt they have a history of “fixing” things that are not broken. Like the dialogue in the Enhanced Edition of the first game. Fans hated the change- heck I still do- several characters switch from British to American accents mid sentence- it’s one “fix” we could have done without. I really liked the original Armor designs for the wild hunt in this game- now they are totally different and less appealing to me. Again- why fix something that wasn’t broken?

    1. Answering your first question: I think that what they had in mind back then was not related with the game development itself or how Next-Gen it is,they were not just trying to show us how amazing and beautiful the game was, their main interest has been all about PR and advertisement focused on bouncing at the “social media trend” and if you go back, you’ll probably notice that the optimization chaos of various titles that came out was not happening yet, well i think you get my point.

Your second one briefly: artistic choices, not everybody have to like it, going bad or not, they’re independent and they take risks, looking from a certain distance that’s good,it is not? Cheers!

  10. What a moron —__— . What I meant was that the lighting’s color is altered and adds a mist-like effect which makes it look more “fantasy” like which is the opposite coz the real color is supposed to be “clear.” Look at my screenshots moron —__—

In case you have selected blindness here it is

If you’re going to say. “But the TOD is different.”
Yeah, the lighting’s so different you can mistake it as different TODs.

There’s an ENB mod in Skyrim and it has two versions. A realistic version and a fantasy version. The realistic version is simpler much like the lighting of W3 now while the fantasy version has an atmospheric feel of “fantasy” that looked like the original lighting of W3 ( though I can’t remember which ENB was that coz I’ve DLed it a long time ago ).

Stop finding a hole and alter the meaning of my comments so you won’t make yourself look stupid —__—

  11. And it appears that for you and couple of others “downgrade” is an easy word to choose when the game doesn’t match with the initial builds. Decisions change over time and so does the game, what if the initial build of the game doesn’t have the world size as big as it’s now ? what if there were not enough A.I characters before ? and what if all the vegetation had scripted animation before ?

Ok lets say they go all crazy on graphics with full Global Illumination, PhysX, HairWorks and vegetation with full collision detection what will happen ? will you buy a pair of Titan X to play it on ultra at 60 fps ? the fact is if something like this would have happened then we same PC gamers started bashing it for being unoptimized or like original Crysis calling it a tech demo rather than a game.

Downgrade happens when you intentionally cripple the PC version in order to create parity with consoles, something that From Software did with Dark Souls 2. For TW3 they are saying from the beginning that console versions will be equal to “high” on PC and anything above will look better on PC, no confusions there.

As for combat what’s wrong with it ? it’s more fluid than TW2.

  12. I’ve seen the latest photos. 🙂 The game looks really great. I think my main issue with the game is the foliage, the plants look flat and dull as hell and looked way better in the first gameplay trailer. I haven’t heard about complains about tesselation, only lower poly count(which is similar though), which seemed to be the case with the first 15 minutes of gameplay but I’ll judge that better once I’ve really seen the game.

The older screenshots, I never standed by them, they look great in terms of lighting and detail but the colours were horrid and un-Witcher like. If I’ve ever mentioned screenshots it would be screenshots released the time the first gameplay trailer hit which show the same graphics as said trailer.

Again on the plants, they have collision detection but it’s still nothing special, it looks very similar to Red Dead Redemption, GTA V, AC IV and a few other games. The texture itself seems to stretch depending on collision which is what these games I’ve mentioned sort of use.

Either way the game looks fantastic but it looks different than the first trailer(which syle I prefered) but it shouldn’t make the game any less enjoyable unlike people who think I actually hate game because of my comments about the change of graphics(not here though). Thanks for the nice, non-hating and honest comment. Rare to see these days.

    1. Your welcome and thanks for taking it positively, to be honest I don’t mind if someone talk about downgrade, in fact I upgraded my system just for this game so I’d be disappointed like anyone else if it’s downgraded, the thing that irritates me is that whenever I talk against possible downgrade people think that I am defending CDPR, I am not. I want this game to be visually stunning on PC and way ahead of consoles like every one of you.

At one point (when the stupid frost effect was shown) I too got worried about the downgrade and since then I started following the game closely asking a lot of questions to the people who were closer to the devs (mods for example or the guys who arrange interviews).

They said that asset wise nothing has been changed however CDPR admitted that they did some changes to the lighting. Previously it was global illumination (don’t have exact technical details) but now it’s something else so the same asset looks different now, the reason to do so is because they wanted to make foliage fully interactive such that it will be effected by people’s movement, horse riding, wind direction and heavy storms and then there is PhysX (flying leaves near the cliff in PAX gameplay), they also wanted to improve draw distance which as it appears was too costly with global illumination even on the PCs, we all know that despite being a severely limited game and after receiving a dozen of patches Assassins Creed Unity still struggles to run well on most modern machines so imagine the performance cost in case of TW3 so they made some design changes which people usually call “downgrade” but it’s a smart move in my opinion.

In any case as we see more final builds of the game, it looks amazing and who knows the foliage will get even better on Ultra settings which they haven’t shown so far. Some guys say that the ground looks too flat but if you see the tower image, the road and every rock is properly bumped. (Sorry for long comment).
