Star Citizen Arena Commander 0.9 Out Now, New Commercial & Brochure Videos

Cloud Imperium has released a new update for the dogfighting module of its upcoming space sim, Star Citizen. In addition, the team has released two new videos from it, with one of them taking its cues from the humor and stunts you’ll find in the BBC’s Top Gear television program.

Here are the key features that are implemented in the new version of Star Citizen’s Arena Commander:

-Murray Cup Racing Mode: As shown at Gamescom, players can now race their pledge ships in a specially designed upper-atmospheric scenario!
-Vanduul Swarm Co-Op: Take on the alien hoards with a friend, or competitor!
-Flyable M50 and 350R: The M50 and the 350R have been readied for flight to kick off the race mode. These ships will now be flyable in all Arena Commander game modes.
-Friend Codes: We’re launching a code system for both private and public matches so you can connect with your wingmen.
-Updated Ship Performance: We’ve increased the speed and acceleration of every ship. With this we’ve also reworked the afterburner mechanic to increase acceleration instead of top speed.
-HUD Update: We’ve overhauled the usability of the visor HUD interface so you can customize your ships systems much more easily in flight.
-New Hangars: We’ve re-mastered all of Star Citizen’s Hangars with the new forward-looking room system and added the Asteroid Hangar.
-6DOF: With the improvements to the IFCS and flight physics we are now ready to introduce 6DOF movement for an entirely new way to fly.

Enjoy!

  1. Controlling in first person is still horrible. I get a weird rubber band effect if I move the camera or the character, like the camera is attached to a rubber boom and can’t stay steady.

I’m getting tired of these Alpha tests. I’ve always hated game testing – life is too short to play broken or unfinished games.

Not that I’m complaining – I’ll gladly wait for the final product, personally I just have an aversion to unfinished games.

    1. Yeah, basically they don’t have final controls in place because the animations aren’t done. Eventually they’ll need to add and link all the animations together so there’s really no need to polish that part of the game yet. Right now it seems like they’re mainly focusing on tweaking and balancing ship combat systems, and that’s as it should be.

    2. Then don’t play. It is far easier for them to alpha and beta test the game if they have the backers help. We have already greatly influenced design as far a ships, combat and general bug finding and fixes go. There is an advantage to this kind of development.

  2. Does anyone know that at which stage this game is actually in? We have seen a demo of dogfighting, some short videos, some small environments but where are the cities, planets, exploration and the whole universe basically.

It seems to take a studio months to do a hangar, I’d expect that to be a rather tiny task compared to the whole game. If they have gotten to the point I have seen in the time they have been making the game then this must come out in 2020 to fulfill the promises made.

    1. i guess SC is one of those games that will complete in time, i heard 2015 for online and mid 2016 for squadron 42 single player campaign but they added lots of other stuff like FPS mode etc…

      1. Yeah, I wonder if the game will be barely done when released and stuff added on the way. So the 2015-2016 release could translate to more like 2018. I know they will keep developing and adding stuff but what is the state at release, nobody knows.

    2. I don’t know what hangars you have hung out in, but SC’s are some of the most detailed one’s ever. As to all you mentioned, who cares? Did you back it? No. So it’ll get done when it gets done. Most games out there are in the 3 year cycle anyways. The newest game out doesn’t just magically get announced and released in case you don’t know.

      1. I have actually backed the game with 125 dollar pledge… But if it takes simply too long people will loose interest, maybe get mad and the stunning graphics will be just ok. They got 50 million dollars, I don’t want the game to be rushed but I don’t want them to lay back and take it to easy either.

        1. Ville N “Does anyone know that at which stage this game is actually in? ”

Ville N “I have actually backed the game with 125 dollar pledge…”

          Doesn’t add up.

You ask about the state of the game, yet you invest more in it than most people spend in 6 months on games yet you can’t be bothered to go to the main page or read NUMEROUS articles all over the web about it?

And you have 881 comments on Disqus alone. Sure…

          1. Well when I pledged there was already some information and footage, I’m just not sure where the game is at this moment. I didn’t pledge because I though the game would be here soon or anything, I saw the potential and the enthusiasm and though I could get the game and support it. I’m sure it will turn out great, but when?

I don’t have the time to watch all their youtube videos but I have seen some of them. There is a project status page but it doesn’t tell much. Planetside is in ”production”, what does that mean in % sense, 10? 90? Persistent universe is in design, so haven’t they actually even started to make the playable universe as a whole? The overall image of development progress hasn’t been clear for me.

          2. I don’t watch their videos, I have a thousand games to play, just like I don’t post in their forums.

I think you need more games because you keep asking questions as if they owe you something now. They don’t, expect delays, it’s inevitable.

Enjoy the commercials they release when they sell a new variant and wait till it comes when it comes.

And no, I am not being blasé. I want the game as much as any other person who is financially invested or just excited for a new space game.

And lets be frank here, the level of detail in everything they have released so far is mind boggling. They even stated the rough cost to model one ship and it makes sense that the cost is so high based on the level of detail. If that is any indication of the visual fidelity to be expected, the planned features of the game will be mind boggling in their graphical glory and you can’t expect that to be done in a few years. And I am only talking about graphics. That should give you some perspective. If it doesn’t, no one can help answer your question because you are asking for a miracle.

          3. ”I think you need more games”
I don’t get how that is relevant to anything. But if you want to know I got too many games to play.

            ”Enjoy the commercials”
I really do but I hope things like that don’t effect the speed of development too much.

”the level of detail in everything they have released so far is mind boggling”

It really is, maybe too good, quality over quantity till some point. There needs to be content to play, especially in a game like this and as they advertised.

          4. 1st point: I would like to see what you consider too many games. My profile unlike 99% of the people on here has a link to my Steam account so anything I say in that regard is proven as fact. The relevancy is that you want the game now and I am telling you to go play others while it gets made. Pretty easy logic to go by if you ask me.

2nd: The commercials are a part of the game in a few different ways. All assets used are made in-game and for the game. They will also be used as commercials in the game when you go to a ship dealer to buy a ship. Ironic right?

3rd: Sorry but I would rather take the graphics they are already giving me and have planned for, over your quantity idea. Why take steps backwards? We have been living in this console age for so long it’s about time we have something that slams our systems to it’s knees. And they aren’t sacrificing anything to give it to us, they even outlined all this in detail during the release of the Dogfighting module.

And again for being a backer at $125 you sure seem to have this mindset that at once both wants the game now yet isn’t willing to read a small minutiae of information available to everyone even non-backers so you can stop asking about when will it be done and what are they doing….etc and so on.

          5. Oh you meant that by the first point. Yes it’s not a matter of not having something to play, still no-one wants to wait for a game for years and years after it being shown and displayed.

2nd, I guess you are right.

3rd. It’s not a really step backwards if you find the sweet balance. Few very detailed places will feel like a graphics demo without much to do. Any ”console age” games won’t be even close even if they focused little more on quantity. But I like the detail they put into the backstory and realism, it’s not just a spaceship, it’s the x manufacturers latest fighting craft with these specific engines etc.

All I asked was for a small roundup and estimate, I could go read 10 pages of stuff and try to get a picture. If I knew it already I would be happy to share the information.
