Thief fans, get ready for a treat. An RTX Remix Mod has just been released for Thief Gold, allowing you to play the entire game with real-time path tracing. So, let’s dive in.
So, what does this RTX Remix mod actually do right now? The mod uses stable-hash polygons from the game’s world data to rebuild the environment. It also uses the game’s original textures and engine lights to power the path tracer.
The mod copies the game’s original dynamic lighting data into RTX Remix every frame. This allows RTX Remix to recreate lights more accurately, including effects like flickering torches that change brightness over time.
It also keeps the original lightmap colors and brightness values. This means areas that were meant to look dark in the original game will still remain dark instead of becoming overly bright with the new ray-traced lighting.
On top of that, the HUD works correctly, and characters and objects are rebuilt every frame using the game’s live render camera. The sky has also been enhanced and is now handled by RTX Remix.
Since this is the first public version of this RTX Remix Mod, you should temper your expectations. From what I know, it does not bring any PBR materials to the game. So, while you can play the entire game with Path Tracing, it’s still not fully complete.
You can go ahead and download the mod from this link.
To install it, you’ll need Thief Gold (Steam) + TFix Lite (NewDark 1.27). Then, you’ll need to place “d3d9_remix.dll” and “.trex/” into the game directory. Finally, you’ll have to copy and paste these files from the mod into the game directory: “d3d9.dll”, “remix-comp-proxy.ini”, “rtx.conf”, “bridge.conf”.
If you want to play older games with Path Tracing, you should try these mods. For instance, you can find such mods for Black Mesa, Star Wars Republic Commando, Need for Speed Carbon, NFS: Underground, and Manhunt. You can also find more for BioShock, NFS: Underground 2, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
And that’s not all. Modders have released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Mirror’s Edge, and Tomb Raider. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for Painkiller and Left 4 Dead 2. Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Gold have also gotten the path-traced treatment. Half-Life fans can also play the game with Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing. A demo has also come out for a Path Tracing Mod for Duke Nukem 3D. Then we have the beta release of the Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod. Lastly, you can download these amazing Path Tracing Mods for Doom, Doom 2, Quake, GTA 4, and Serious Sam. These last ones are among the best Path Tracing Mods you can find. So, don’t skip on them.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
