Crestfallen Medieval Survival feature

Crestfallen: Medieval Survival is the first game that recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, and it looks kind of mediocre

Bloodbath Studios has released its medieval open world RPG, Crestfallen: Medieval Survival, on Steam Early Access. And, from the looks of it, this is the first PC game that has the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 listed as its recommended GPU.

From what I know, Crestfallen: Medieval Survival is powered by Unreal Engine 5. So, my guess is that the game uses both Nanite and Lumen. This could be why it’s so GPU-heavy. I can also assume that the game lacks performance optimizations. After all, it’s in an Early Access phase. So, it appears that it’s in the same league – in terms of performance – as ARK: Survival Ascended.

Now I shouldn’t be too harsh on this game since it’s made by a very small team. Bloodbath Studios is nowhere as big as Studio Wildcard or Remedy. For an indie project, it’s quite good. However, there’s a big issue here that can’t be ignored. Right now, the graphics of Crestfallen: Medieval Survival don’t seem good enough to justify such a powerful GPU.

To get an idea, Bloodbath Studios recommends an Intel i9-13000KS with 32GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. Oh, and they have not listed the resolution, graphics settings, and framerate these PC specs target.

Not only that, but the game’s official launch trailer suffers from MAJOR performance issues. I don’t know what GPU was used for that trailer. However, it looks really, really rough. I mean, look at it.

Again, I get it. This is a Steam Early Access game. However, these PC system requirements are too high. And, as I said, I don’t see anything here that justifies these requirements.

Here’s hoping that Curtis Ashford will expand the team so that they can properly optimize it. I also don’t know whether the game supports NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR. If it doesn’t, they should add support for them right away.

Below you can find the game’s launch trailer. You can also find its official PC system requirements. So, go ahead and take a look at them.

    1. True! 😀

I actually love these cr@ppy "optimized" games, because they are good proving grounds for improving the performance of SteamOS further.

  1. A 4090 recommended is stupid the way they are doing it. They should have said for 4K but let's take a look at 4K gaming from the Steam Hardware Survey:

4K less than 4% even after years of the monitors becoming reasonably priced.

    4090 less than 1%

Left to guess on our own the recommended for 1440p is probably out of reach for most gamers as well. The game seems to be saying to me, "Steer clear of this unoptimized garbage".

    1. it's the constant upselling culture of vg journos that creates this bizarre perception bubble and ofc 4090 owners are heavy in comments as you have to be way into vg graphics to fork that much out for a gpu and surrounding system. Until 4k equip in pc gaming is similar priced to 1080p it's never going to catch on big time.

  2. KIND OF MEDIOCRE? This is sht at best. The only reason someone would ask for a 4090 is because their devs can't code for sht.

  3. Looking at the install size difference I'd guess that's 4k60/RT w uhd textures pack or installed etc Yeah typical small team stuff not much work done on optimization and way overuse for what's shown brute force it. All those awful factory line horror games usually unity are like that, too much usage for what's shown.

  4. Lumen is the weakest form of ray tracing there is. Not just this glorified turd, any game with lumen shouldn't require high end gpus to play at 1080p 60 fps

    1. Yeah it's fake tracing especially in software designed to push a lie that the consoles can do it.

  5. Why does Unreal Engine always attract these nobody amateur developers.

It's always basement dwellers who never designed a decent game before.

It's always in 3D, it's always about graphics, but they have no clue how to code, do animation, gameplay or storytelling.

They always release their unfinished game on Steam because that's the only store that will accept their garbage. After no one buys their game, they either disappear, or they start making mods that are even worse than their Unreal Engine game.

  6. So small team + early access game demanding a rtx4090 to play it at max settings…..

not sure if it is a marketing spin or plain stupid
