Digital Foundry has shared an interesting video, in which it showcases the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super appears to be 3X faster than Sony’s PS5.
DF has tested three games. These three games are A Plague Tale: Requiem, Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2. In the exact same settings and resolutions, the NVIDIA RTX 4080 Super is 3.2X faster than PS5. Then, in Cyberpunk 2077, NVIDIA’s latest GPU is once again faster by 3.2X. And finally, in Alan Wake 2, the RTX4080S is faster by 3.1X.
Now the good news for PC gamers is that AMD’s Radeon RX 7900XTX plays in the same ballpark. At least in the rasterized games. AMD’s GPU was able to match and exceed the performance of the RTX4080 Super in A Plague Tale: Requiem and Alan Wake 2. However, in Cyberpunk 2077, the 7900XTX was noticeably slower than the RTX4080S. Still, AMD’s GPU was more than 2X faster than the PS5.
This should give you an idea of why I called the RTX4090 a BEAST. Provided you’re willing to drop your resolution to 2K, the RTX 4090 will last you for a very long time. And that’s the main reason why I called it one of the best purchases you could make when it came out.
Anyway, be sure to check out DF’s video as it showcases the huge gap between consoles and PC. In theory, Sony will be able to reduce this gap with the PS5 Pro. So, it will be interesting to see the performance increase of the PS5 Pro over the regular PS5.
Bottom line is that a current high-end GPU is more than enough for PC gamers. This shouldn’t come as a surprise but hey, it is what it is. So, until PS6 and the Next-Xbox hit the streets, you’ll be able to enjoy great performance on your system. And that’s with both AMD and NVIDIA. So, let’s hope that Intel will also join the group with its Battlemage GPUs.

It’s more than just comparing the performance of a dGPU to a console though. Here in the US a 4080 Super goes for around $1,000 and a PS5 for around $500. To add the PC hardware capable of taking full advantage of that 4080 Super it would be another $1,000. So now we are comparing a $2,000 high performance gaming rig to a $500 console. In perspective that 3.2 times performance increase will cost 4 times more than the console.
As far as the 4090 lasting a very long time, that isn’t really true. I hear it all the time from high end gamers that once you go 4K you can never go back. They aren’t going to drop back to 2K gaming to extend the lifespan of their 4090. That 4090 will be great for 4K for another few years but then you will be wanting to upgrade to stay with ever increasing 4K demands.
There never has been and never will be any such thing as future-proofing with PC hardware. Gamers that will pay for 4K gaming know that the upgrade cycle will continue just like for all of us.
DF is sponsored by nvidia. They mention it several times. So they create this kind of “non marketing” marketing articles “praising” nvidia. They include amd gpus but their titles are nvidia based. The same does John. He is receiving free gpus from nvidia. So he write this articles with nvidia titles. Worst type of journalism.

I would call him extremely biased. Nvidia has some feutures that are better but I wouldn’t say in any way that AMD is not able to compete. Actually price perfomance is the opposite. 4090 is $17.85 for 112 fps average. 7900xtx is $10.53 for 93fps average. 8 nvidias gpu up to 4060ti are on top of non value gpus. 7900xt is $10 for 75fps. There is not even one nvidia gpu that is valued better than AMD. 4060ti cost per frame is the same as 7900xtx. All this in 4k gaming. Based on current pricing the 7900xt is the best value for money card.

About your points mentioned, I disagree almost entirely. The only advantage I see for Intel’s and AMD offerings are VRAM size on 300 – 700 bucks graphics cards, and that’s it; or in other words: customers who can’t afford or don’t want to spend so much money on the rtx 4070 super (16 GB Vram), rtx 4080, rtx 4090, to be future-bullet proof and not run out of VRAM in 4K-UHD and ray-/path tracing. That’s Nshitia’s milking comes to play, limiting VRAM on purpose only to make more people “Buy up” and again upgrade in the future.
And even that’s not bullet-proof advantage becaus the gpus will all likely run out of horsepower in 3 – 4, before VRAM gets the limiting factor.

The comparison is even more absurd when you consider the power consumption and the age of the technologies. The Nvidia GPU tech that the 4080 Super is based on released nearly two years after the PS5 and the card alone consumes 100 watts more than the entire console when gaming on average.
A much less click-baity (and more interesting) article would’ve been something like “Can a $500 PC match current generation consoles in 2024?” or “Building a PC for the same price as a console in 2024.”
RTX 4090 is 2500 Euro right now, in my place here. There is nothing at
2K. 4080 is like 20-30% slower and it cost 1000. RTX 4090 is NOT worth
double, and almost tripple. So yeah, the 4090 is impressive but also not worth it if its anything over 1500. imho.
You could get it at $1600 at launch (and at $1800 when I wrote the other article).

It’s worth for those playing in 4K-UHD above 100 fps,
those owning premium TVs with superior image quality to match the performance, and all kinds of amateurs/professionals etc. who work with that card.
It’s actually a freaking bargain for a lot kind of work including rendering, machine learning, science, calculations etc.
Don’t forget: Nvidias execs marginalized theiir own quadro graphics card lineuo; the rtx 4090 is a quadro substitution.

Besides: A rtx 4090 will be powerful enough till the end of this console generation for 4K-UHD gaming; be it native 4K-UHD or 1440p image reconstructed to 4K-UHD, for above 100 fps.
People who bought the rtx 4090 can easily skip the next rtx 5090 and go for the rtx 6090, which will be available in 2027 at the start of the next console generation.

I had 7 different rtx 4090 from 5 different brands.
The superior underdog this generation is the “PNY GeForce RTX 4090 XLR8 Gaming”.
I had sent all other models from asus, gigabyte, msi, gainward, zotac back to the retailer.
Why? Because they all succk in many ways and the fuggen greedy execs of those companies, know all that even before day 1 launch, but intentionally done nothing (money of course. and sinc e95 % of the mainstream reviewers are all sellouts, liars and get golden review sample, they tell nothing about it).
1) Asus the most horrible loud coil whine I ever heard, no matter the model (even the 2000+ bucks one).
2) gigabyte and zotac broken fans and fan curve which can’t be fixed.
3) msi half the coil whine of asus, but at least fans work properly. the suprim simply too expensive to justify
4) gainward, palit etc. all mediocre with medium chance of coil whine.
Finally found the underdog PNY; ordered two of it.
Both had at 300 fps and 450 W, quieter coil whoíne than the asus at 60 fps and gigabyte at 150 fps.
Kept one till today ;=)

Even managed to grab one when was below 1650 bucks in Europe.

I don’t understand you Linux people repping steam so damn hard. It’s counterintuitive. I though the idea behind Linux is so you are EXTRA FREE. But you’ll make a deal with the devil if it means you don’t have to rely on Windows. What you’re doing is jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. I’m shopping around for the right distro, in order to dump windows for good but Steam is not the way. DRM is garbage in any form.

But please note there are still going to be some big upgrades shortly, like switching to the all new KDE 6.0 desktop environment.

I also lost every interest in pc games and hardware. Its just f*king useless riddled with performance bugs. I have an RTX 3080 here and yet still mostly play newer games on the ps5. Its overall just a better experience without #stutterstruggle. I prefer constant good frametimes with 30 fps over dog stutters at 60fps. Consistency makes the games really a lot more acceptable. Games properly made for PC are awesome tho.
Next game is Persona 3 on PS5 and Dragons Dogma 1 on PC

If you cap your PC games at 30 fps, you’ll also see no stuttering…
Not necessarily ….. PCs don’t do frame limiting very well so if you limit to 30 FPS and your GPU is spitting out 80 – 90 FPS then buffering the extra frames and delaying them can introduce some micro-stuttering much like happens with V-sync.
The only real exception to that rule are games that have a built in limit. Usually they are throttling the entire game engine to 60 FPS rather than buffering extra frames. That is also how consoles do it but it’s a lot easier because they all use the same hardware
my 4070 and i5 12400F with 32gb of DDR5 plays every game High/Ultra @1440p tbf….
you must be doing something wrong because I can play every new game flawlessly at 2K on very high settings without any stuttering on a 4070 Ti.
Well I bet you take the time to figure out which settings can be turned down a notch while most people are lazy and use the highest preset available and then b*tch and moan because it can’t run the game right.

If you just set your 3080 to run with the same Medium and Low game settings as the PS5 then it would smoke it and get you way above 60 FPS with virtually no stutter
BTW the PS5 also has stuttering, you see it all the time in Digital Foundry’s testing. You can say what you want about Digital Foundry but they are the only ones that give us actually PS5 and Series X performance specs because they are the only ones that have taken the time and done the work to build custom testing software for the analysis of consoles while everyone else only does PC

If you want to avoid stutters due to shader caching, there’s a solution:
Either play on Linux directly or on Windows, use DXVK GPLAsync for DX11 or VKD3D for DX12.

Since RTX2080 was announced i made almost 90K(profit only)…because of you,the ones who buys Nvidia products.
PS: I feel that in following years Nvidia stock will fall,as people start seeing that Nvidia is selling the same Hardware with little upgrade for same price as previous generation.

Next dope is to stay aware when new product is announced,make a lot of research and instead preorder that product,let’s say a product that is 3000$,you buy stock’s,you wait for sheeps to buy the product,then sell the stocks at higher price,switch product(trading 101).
At release rtx4090 was above 1800$,1 stock was around 500/400$.
Do the math,instead buying an 6000$ PC,buy few stocks,double the money,buy different stocks,double it again,in few weeks you buy that 6000$ PC for free,from profit.

As far as investing you must know, if you really do buy individual stocks, that most people lose money doing that. Without professional investment advice you might as well be gambling in a casino with your money. If you are willing to pay an investment firm for advice then you might as well just invest in Mutual Funds designed for your target retirement age as far as risk tolerance goes.

The whole Nvidia stock rise has nothing to do with consumer gaming products.
It is based on Nvidia’s promises of “AI”, which is a giant bubble similar to domotics, VR, crypto, self-driving, etc.
Nvidia keeps promising new untapped GPU markets that never materialize.
Nvidia has a p/e of 166. The dot com 2.0 bubble will collapse.

I always think it’s best to spend as little as possible for the lowest spec you can be fine with. Consoles are actually a better way to go for most people, they’re catered to by the devs, consoles are a whole working game focused pc-like thing all in one for 500 or so bucks. Some games even come on a disc you can resell as used. The biggest problem is the gated limited ecosystem. No sailing the seas either. Mods are highly restricted and mostly none.
The high end gpus are TERRIBLE price/perf ratio. 4k tvs are CHEAP and that’s what a console needs mostly. A 80-90 gpu wants a 240hz 4k high gamut 500$ screen. A PC capable of supporting a 4080-90 needs a very powerful system, cpu, ram, psu, mobo etc So yeah spend 4-5x get 3x the perf, which is mostly a subjective thing really other than resolution, fps, rtpt and that’s just enable or not, consoles can do a combo of that too. So unless you do certain types of work, like UE5-nvidia freelance salesperson-agro agent, video work, any number crunching work, graphics work, etc they don’t make much sense. 60-70 level is a better value. High end cards also make one think caviar for B/L/D is normal and get very acclimated to that, which if you’re well off fine, card burns out no problem etc but isn’t too real.
I think a mid-high range laptop at less than 2000 makes more sense, benefits of pc, whole system-os-screen etc for one price, no more upgrade hysteria unless you do the whole system so you adjust to lowering settings etc Eye patching works fine, mods, mobility.
at almost 3 times the price, it better be.

Only consumers stuck in the past with their mindset (or games played and hardware), have not realized yet that rasterized performance doesn’t matter anymore since basically 2020, because majority of new and graphically demanding games (were it matters) all include machine learning image reconstruction as DLSS version 3.5 and Intel’s XeSS, or amd’s manual approach; additionally frame generation interpolation and soon extrapolation.

These people not realize such a gpu e.g. rtx 4090 would suck 2000 watts or so, but would still achieve the same performance/fps/graphical fidelity as an rtx 4090 with clever usage of machine learning, reconstruction, tensor- and ray tracing cores.
The linear scaling of design, functions etc. in transistors etc. have already come to and end even before 2010.
Freaking rtx 4090 has more than 60 % transistors in hardware, accelerators, but only achievs 30 % highe rasterizer performance than the rtx 4080.
Nvidias execs and engineers were smart enough to realize that early on and chose the “smarter way to achieve the same result”
I see a lot of people crapping on the 4080 Super. I’m one of those who bought one. I’ve been waiting so long to upgrade my GTX 1070, the cost just didn’t matter anymore. I haven’t built my new rig yet, but I’m completely happy with my decision.

That’s just common sense …. A PS5’s GPU is somewhere between a 5700XT and a 6700XT leaning more to the 5700XT side of the equation because of the reduced voltage and current requirements because of the package TDP limitations

Some people cannot actually afford heavy gpus such as 4080 super or 4090, that’s why they prefer PS5 which offers conditional performance at 4K.
