Now here is something that came out of nowhere. A team of modders has been working on an unofficial PC port of the 32-bit Playstation JRPG, The Legend of Dragoon. This unofficial PC version supports native 4K resolutions and 60fps, and you can already download it.
For those unaware, The Legend of Dragoon is a game that used pre-rendered backgrounds, similar to those found in the 32-bit Final Fantasy and Resident Evil games. The game also had a combination of turn-based mechanics and real-time commands. And no. The Legend of Dragoon has NOTHING in common with Panzer Dragoon.
So, its unofficial PC port is called Project: Severed Chains. This is a reverse-engineered PC port and a full reconstruction of its game engine. So, it’s quite incredible what this team has managed to achieve.
This unofficial PC port has higher-quality audio and more accurate controller input. It also has full mouse support for its menus. It also aims to have near-0 loading times with instant save. And yes, there will be unlimited save slots.
To be honest, I didn’t play The Legend of Dragoon when it originally came out. So, I might give this project a go. Or at least I hope to find some free time in order to enjoy it.
You can download the latest version of this project from its official website. Do note that you’ll need the game’s original ROM in order to run it.
Speaking of unofficial PC versions of classic console titles, we also suggest checking out the following ones. PC gamers can enjoy a PC port of Perfect Dark featuring mouselook, widescreen, FOV and 60fps support. Then we have this PC port of WipeOut. There is also a PC port of The Legend of Zelda – A Link to the Past. Yes, that’s a project that Nintendo hasn’t shut down. Oh, and let’s not forget this PC port of Jak and Daxter.
Have fun!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. Brilliant. I wish someone makes a PC port of Tekken 3 as well. With online multiplayer and mod support it will be awesome.
I was a big fan of Tekken 2 myself! If the fandom is pretty unified, ask in one of the social hubs (Discord?) if there are any seasoned modders or software engineers who would be willing to try reverse-engineering the game! The bigger the fandom, the more likely someone can help get the process started.
Exactly. I know a few skilled modders who are capable of pulling off such magic. I’ll ask them if they’re interested because I doubt Namco will ever be porting it on PC
lmao why did they use java of all things to make this.
Plenty of good reasons! For example: faster to write, easy cross-platform support. Runs on Windows/Mac/Linux/SteamDeck, all x64 and arm64 with no modifications. Android too, if we find an extra volunteer to help us on that end.
getting about 13 fps in the opening part on a gtx 1080 ti, and i5 9400f. what about everyone else?
RecBuild 2 was built with a software renderer until we could set aside time for hardware rendering (next release). Please stick to 2x resolution for the time being!
I’m still traumatized from “death dimension” and “demon’s gate”.
this is a wish comes true ! I played that game for hundreds of hours or more. The gameplay was realy fun. The story was deep and fascinating, the sudden plot twist of the background of one of the main characters was for that time a big shock ( just watch the cutscene of the Black Monster on youtube and it still gives me shivers ).
The background music, when arriving in certain area’s. ah yes and the backgrounds had such a high quality in terms of art design..
thank you John ! this is a article that made my day!
I feel like the 32-bit period is the most forgotten of all, especially the Sega Saturn.
That’s too bad, because there were so many gems which never got sequels/remakes.
For example, Die Hard Trilogy. (there was a terrible Die Hard Trilogy 2 on PS1 though)

I think John should test the games before posting here, just downloaded it and it doesn’t runs at 60fps and you can’t even get close to 4k in the “render scale” section. I just recommend sticking to emulation and download the HD textures when it releases, if it ever releases…
This is Drew, community organizer for the LoD fandom and Severed Chains. Please look at our video attached to the article. We state that this is a preview of features coming in an update months from now. It’s a mistake in DSO’s news reporting which should be corrected. News outlets get stuff wrong sometimes; it happens. Let’s give them a chance to fix it.
If you wish to try 4k60 you may do so via our devbuild. It’s set to go in every part of the game except combat, which will receive 60FPS a little later in the year. Just beware that the devbuild is unstable and not meant for serious playthroughs.
