Microsoft and Asobo have released a brand new update for Microsoft Flight Simulator that adds beta support for the DirectX 12 API. However, and contrary to what you may have seen on YouTube, this update does NOT add any Ray Tracing effects.
As Asobo has stated:
“We have introduced several highly requested features by the community: an updated weather system, early access to DX12, and a dev mode replay system.”
Unfortunately, though, this DX12 Beta seems to perform worse than DX11. YouTubers have already shared some comparison videos between these two APIs that you can find below. And it appears that DX11 runs better, even on high-end PC systems.
It will be interesting to see whether Asobo will be able to improve the performance in DX12. After all, the game originally had major performance issues in DX11 that Asobo has managed to resolve. It will also be interesting to see when – and if – the team will implement and Ray Tracing effects.

is it me or does the dx12 version look better?
They are literally the same.
DX12 has been out for years and even an MS product doesn’t utilize it until now? Such a failed strategy by MS to push Win10, even games that supposedly require win10 don’t use dx12 in most cases and in a lot don’t require win10. From early reports win11 is more slide downhill.
It’s incredible that it launched as DX11 to begin with…It’s MS after all.
It’s highly unstable too, got a crash to desktop earlier when testing it out. Where’s DLSS at Asobo?
I’m surprised that this was DX11 only game all along.
DX12 is clearly considered to not be superior in any way to DX11/not worth the time by devs, incl. Microsoft themselves and it’s obvious it was there to push Win10.
If ray tracing was included in DX11 spec and it can be – as it’s entirely hardware based – nobody would care about DX12. See completely platform agnostic Vulkan aka OpenGL5.
So we are stuck with 2009 API and zero graphics innovation apart from ray tracing.
