Grand Theft Auto Online feature

Someone has reduced the loading times of GTA Online by 70%

GTA Online is notorious for its long loading times. And, surprisingly enough, a modder was able to improve loading times by 70% on an AMD FX-8350, showcasing some of the game’s optimization issues.

According to “T0ST“, there’s a single-thread CPU bottleneck while starting up GTA Online that will affect most mid/low tier CPUs. Moreover, it appears that GTA struggles to parse a 10MB JSON file. Not only that, but the JSON parser itself is poorly built/naive and after parsing there’s a slow item de-duplication routine.

The modder was able to address these issues and has improved loading times by 70% on his system. The PC system that T0ST used was an AMD FX-8350 with a KINGSTON SA400S37120G, 2X Kingston 8192 MB (DDR3-1337) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070.

In order to improve the game’s loading times, T0ST wrote a .dll, injected it in GTA, and hooked some functions. What’s also really cool here is that T0ST has shared the source of PoC (which you can download from here). Therefore, PC gamers can now enjoy shorter loading times while loading GTA Online. Do note, however, that your results may vary, and you may not see that big of a boost (especially if you’re using a high-end system).

Lastly, T0ST urges Rockstar to fix these issues. After all, and as he says, these problems shouldn’t take more than a day for a single dev to solve.

Have fun!

  1. Shouldn’t take more than a year but its been like 7yrs already for the pc version? Maybe they will get on it just to save face, maybe not. The online loading of GTAV is a huge thorn in any gamer that wants to enjoy the game.. I know many have quitted just for this reason alone.

    1. I don’t think they’ll C&D him, more like flag his code as cheats and ban him and anyone that uses it

      1. Surprisingly they didn’t. They gave him a $10K bug bounty reward and are shipping the fix soon.

It’s just so weird how this one person with a disassembler did the work of a multi-billion dollar company.

  2. Oh they knew how to fix it, the loading of gta online are long on purpose to make the process of grinding even more tedious and incite players to purchase shark cards.

        1. I don’t buy bethesda games because they look like sht and need a ton of adjustments in order to be deemed playable whereas R* deliveres masterpieces. The kind that drives sales thru the roof. So whatever we say doesn’t matter one bit.

  3. It is absolutely unacceptable that the game is still on this state after 3 generation of re releasing.
But no surprise, Rockstar made it clear that all they care is selling shark cards, thats why i quit back in 2016.

  4. Omfg….the game came out 7 years ago and the Devs have done nothing about this SIMPLE fix….

I bet you will also flag some sort of “anti cheat” if GrandTrashOnline even has one, with this.
