New patent filed by Rockstar may hint at significant GTA 6 NPC AI & traversal improvements

It appears that recently some Reddit users have discovered a new patent application filed by Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, in October 2020. The patent application is titled as ‘System And Method For Virtual Navigation In A Gaming Environment’, which is most likely for the developer’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6.

Although there is no specific reference given to any particular game, it was developed by Rockstar’s lead AI programmer, Simon Parr, and David Hynd, Rockstar’s associate director of technology, which suggests that it could be related to the studio’s next game, GTA6.

So basically this new patent hints at the possible next-gen NPC AI and vehicle navigation tech which is going to be implemented in Grand Theft Auto 6. If this patent is to be taken as a base guideline for now, it appears that GTA 6 might feature advanced new NPC and AI systems to create an immersive and more realistic city full of ‘smart’ AI.

The patent is highly technical in nature, but it describes new advanced methods to improve in-game NPC movement patterns as well as the virtual navigation.

The new document highlights how NPC systems and vehicles actually work linearly across nodes and the addresses throughout the game world, as evident from the graph. The patent aims to make the navigation and behavior of NPC characters more realistic in GTA 6.

As the patent reads, “Conventional systems only provide limited resources for automating NPCs. For example, processing power, memory, and efficiency only allow for a predetermined number of NPC controlled cars in any single instance of a conventional system.

As an additional drawback, conventional systems relied almost entirely on local traffic avoidance for NPCs to avoid collisions.

However, players of a video game would expect to see more than a predetermined number of NPC controlled cars in a video game for a realistic experience.

In conventional systems, NPCs are often grouped by characteristics and perform the same motions. In fact, some NPCs of conventional systems fade out of existence as the player approaches the NPC.”

So basically Rockstar developers are now looking into an advanced AI pattern method, which will enhance its NPC systems to allow for more immersion and realistic interactions in the open game world, from how characters move, what behavior patterns they exhibit, how they interact with the game world at any particular given time, and how NPCs drive across huge cities.

As the document reads, “Each NPC can define its own specific characteristics for traversing the road nodes.”

So NPCs and AI systems would be able to use Pathfinding and subsequent node traversal, so that the NPC AI feels more reactive. The patent and the graph outlines specific characteristics for each NPC, so that they can traverse the game environment differently based on the vehicle type, road speed rules and restrictions, type of road and street they’re on, and also the current state of the weather in the city.

The patent is designed to create “a realistic virtual world that is not limited by hardware and software limitations. For example, driving slower on residential-type roads or having to perform certain manoeuvres to avoid oncoming traffic on single-lane streets”.

“In yet another embodiment, NPCs can also account for exigent circumstances, such as a high-speed chase. For example, in addition to using local avoidance based on the coarse graph 200, splines can be generated through ambient traffic. In other words, vehicles in the virtual world that are obeying traffic laws are used to generate routes through/around them.

A list of ambient traffic in the area can be generated and for each vehicle, information related to the subject NPC is recorded. For example, the space between two vehicles, relative direction of travel, velocity differences, and so on. Based on this information, a route can be plotted towards the final destination”, the patent reads.

However, it’s too early to come to any conclusion now because things might change as the game development progresses, and some of the AI pattern and coding might also be altered when GTA 6 comes out in future.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. How interesting, I have always been interested in having NPCs react more realistically to their environment and the player’s actions; I was kind of expecting something groundbreaking like that with Cyberpunk though unfortunately that turned out the way it did :/

    1. CDPR took a grand for this purpose alone – cdprojekt.com/en/capital-group/eu-projects/12017-city-creation

I was big fan of CDPR, but what they did with Cyberpunk launch, to put it as mildly as I can, it was poorly executed.

I spend over 40h in-game mostly just doing side missions etc. leaving main quest till my RTX3090 arrives so I can enjoy GI, but now, with GPU, I just put that into back-burner till 2022 when all upgrades etc. come out and game is fixed.

Before launch I was hyped about Cyberpunk but now it’s just like seeing demo or tech preview, multiple issues, crowd Ai is a joke, got stuck few times, unable to pick up items, level cap, crafting Ui issues and plot itself getting more “flatlined” as I progress.

The only reason why I write this is that this had so much potential and it all got wasted …

      1. No shot. They still have to release gta v remaster 2 and let that run its course.

Then announce gta 6 and then delay it’s once or twice.

          1. The closest thing I can think of would be the Bully release on Xbox 360. Maybe you’re thinking of GTA 5 and RDR2 being released on PC. There are no actual remasters though.

          2. That’s not really a remaster. It was just released on PS3 a year before. I’m not a fan of this practice, I think its clear they do this knowing people will buy it twice. But I don’t think it qualifies as a remaster. I’d be happy to buy a proper remaster of RDR1, The Warriors, or some of the GTA games.

    1. GTA 4 came out in 2008 and 5 in 2013 and GTA SA came out in 2004 so I would expect 6 to come out in just a few years at the latest

      1. GTA 6 is coming out the moment Online microtransactions buying playerbase shirnks down enough for Rockstar to notice. So, really hard to say when that happens.

          1. Rockstar is definitely working on it, its just theres no rush to release a new game. GTA Online makes ALOT of money, idk what Red dead online does tbh. Also get this is Take-Two or Rockstar needs a “in the mean time” release. They can port GTA V to the Switch without online mode.

Personally I rather them take their time. Iron out as much bugs as you can, improve the engine, fine tune the GTA 6 online more.

      2. Stop comparing old releases as some sort of time line for the next gta game. RDR2 came just came out like about 1 and half 2years ago. So don’t expect anything from R* for a long while.

  2. They are doing it wrong, just slap some system intensive feature like RTX and let the AI be braindead like CP77, no one will notice s/

    1. And how about using a lot of visual details and a refined cinematic set pieces and story telling to hide a minimalistic game design and 2002-like missions ?

        1. That applies for both of them, but only one of them is exposed to criticism while the other get 3 bl*wjobs a minute

          1. The irony in your post is that few of CP criticisms comes from the mission design and you know it, you just sound b%tthurt about it. It also applies more to CP77 because we are talking about a 2020 game, not a 2013 game.

  3. One thing I like about rockstar games they only announce the game when it’s ready… Hope this will a true sandbox experience unlike RDR2.

          1. Vice City was the luckiest of them all with just one week delay.

Most of their games were delayed 6+ months or even a year (bully, Midnight Club LA, GTA4, Max Payne 3, Rdr & Rdr2, etc)

        1. I recall it because I had the Spring 2013 preorder poster on some backroom wall at the place I used to live.

          1. Dude lets hope that GTA 6 actually comes out for the PC during the SAME time as the console releases i waited and waited for it

          2. Not a chance, while i appreciate Rockstar for their craft, let’s not forget they are also huge mercenaries when it comes to PC.

  4. I havent been impressed by AI since FEAR, and I doubt this will be different. But hey, as long as it’s not broken like in Cyberpunk

    1. Gaming PC cpu’s have always been able to handle proper AI but have been held back by the laughable cpu’s of the old consoles (jaguar cores are almost beaten by calculators for goods sake), glad the new consoles have quite ok cpu (although instruction throughput is somewhat hamstrung by high latency gddr).

Think we will see quite ok AI once the old consoles compatibility are ditched ie expect 2-3 years more due to cross-gen titles.

      1. Yeah, kind fun that AI was way better in PC games some 10+ years ago… heck even Half life had better ai than most modern games where squads were working like squads for instance.

        1. Yup man ! I still play these old FPS games on my system !

Even Half LIfe 2 has a pretty good AI/NPC behavior system, at least better than some of the new games which have been released recently, imo.

          1. Yeah, i do nostalgia trips from time to time too. Its kind of sad how much of a decline there have been in game AI when pretty much all other areas have seen major improvements

          2. Seems like today’s gamers care more about graphics than anything else so that’s what Developers spend a lot of their time on. I won’t lie. I like the eye candy but it’s not the most important thing to me. That’s why I still go back and play games from the 90s and up.

          3. I can understand the devs thoo – The weakest target gaming hardware is what sets the low target bar and with the cpu in for instance the ps4/xb (weak jaguar cores that’s slowed down even further by low cache with high latency gddr memory) makes everything become a compromise – It’s barely enough to keep the gpu well feed so it’s a choice between detailed gfx/framerate or other tasks. Most sacrifice the rest like ai and can frankly understand that choice.

I suspect we will finally see a change in about two-tree years from now when the cross gen era will getting to a close and the target bar will be raised, the new consoles are most likely what will set that bar in cpu performance that can be allocated to other tasks than gfx. So those ryzen cores (sadly yet again coupled with high latency mem that will most likely make them stall quite a bit but even if they don’t work 100% they will still beat jaguars with high latency mem any day!) – Dev’s will simply have more instruction budget to play around with and AI is one area many agree is neglected including the dev’s by the looks of it.

          1. Evolve in which way? GTA worlds got bigger, then GTA 4 reduced the game world but put more features and details, GTA 5 was kind of a sequel to GTA 4 with a bigger world and more emphasis on multiplayer.

          2. I remember thinking what GTA games would be like in the future while playing San Andreas. GTA 5 isn’t exactly what I hoped for, never mind only having 1 GTA every 8 years or so. They do play it safe to a great extent.

I wish they would go back to to time period games. I think a gritty 90s version would be awesome, maybe in the UK or something. Won’t ever happen though because the games need to have iFuit phones and colorful palm trees for the zoomers.

          3. “Won’t ever happen though because the games need to have iFuit phones and colorful palm trees for the zoomers.”
            Exactly this

      1. I think it’s only one brother that left. Well maybe he got tired of the world becoming satire more than his games.

    1. No one cares. Their games are still Fire ?. That’s why they sell so damn much and are highly reviewed. R*are the industry gold standards when it comes to open world games no matter what any of you haters have to say.

        1. Prior to GTA V yes, but then we had games like Far Cry 3 and Watch Dogs who pushed for open ended gameplay and more freedom on how you complete a mission, but GTA V mission design stayed the same, killing any creativity that comes from the player and get him to failure everytime he tries something different from what the devs planned, you can’t do any stealth unless the mission planned it, you can’t avoid a police pursuit if it is planned by the dev at the end of the mission, and a lot of stuff like that, R* games thrive in freeroam, but are objectively lacking in missions/quests, but yeah Cyberpunk is bad so GTA is systematically perfect for that reason…

          1. “but then we had games like Far Cry 3 and Watch Dogs who pushed for open ended gameplay and more freedom on how you complete a mission”

Didn’t played Watch Dogs, but played Far Cry 3 and can smell the bullsh!t from a mile away. FC3 is repetitive as hell, not a bad game but quite repetitive and the freedom is basically choosing if you want to go guns blazing or with stealth.

“but are objectively lacking in missions/quests”

Linear doesn’t automatically means the missions are bad, there is always room for improvement and they are def. trying with this new patent, don’t know what you mean by “prior to GTA V” since that one got the best missions of the series.

“but yeah Cyberpunk is bad so GTA is systematically perfect for that reason…”

No one claimed that, if CP77 gets negatively compared to PSX level games, they have only themselves to blame.

          2. “freedom is basically choosing if you want to go guns blazing or with stealth”
It’s still one additional solution compared to GTA where you have only one lol, repetition is a thing, open ended gameplay is another, don’t mix-up things, and please don’t tell me that V’s campaign isn’t repetitive when it comes to gameplay, you’re basically driving or shooting for the most part but i digress…
As an example of the lack of freedom i talked about, take this mission on RDR2 where you have to burn a corn field to force some foes to expose themselves, try to do this (burn a corn field) on freeroam and you simply can’t, and there is so much similar examples of very scripted frustrating things like this

      1. Sales never meant quality, and so are the press reviews, i don’t have R* and i’m not a hater just for saying something true, GTA V and RDR2 are far from being perfect games but thanks to fanboys like you R* will never change anything in their games because they always managed to get their bl*wjobs anyway

        1. “GTA V and RDR2 are far from being perfect”

Do you have any free roaming games that does stuff better than them in terms of NPC, physics and general attention to detail? If the best criticism you can throw at them is that “they are not perfect”, them even you got to admit they do a pretty good job.

          1. That’s what i said in a comment earlier, these games thrive in freeroam like nothing else, but that’s it, you can only expect a good story on top that, their campaigns feel so basic

    2. Throwing empty buzzword words like “linear” to see if the strawman sticks, just to defend a boring failure of a game called CP of all things haha.

      1. HAHA the real OG strawman, throwing the off-topic “CP” buzzword to get rid of any criticism on R*, you’re basically saying R* should not be criticized because CP is a bad game, this is by far your dumbest comment on this site

        1. But there is no criticism. GTA missions are linear, therefore bad is a really dumb criticism. So is saying 2002 level design, as if games nowadays don’t mimic stuff from 20 years ago, just look at jrpgs, they barely changes the combat system from the 80’s, just with better graphics.

  5. I can’t wait for GTA VI, I NEED IT!

Every GTA is always so groundbreaking and sets the level for the rest of the industry.

    And yes, f*ck GTA ONLINE

  6. Thank the old consoles laughable cpu’s for that… we will still see tons of cross gen titles where things like ai will be held back by that and developer-time “wasted” to script everything that is not just “run @ player with guns up shooting” ai.

  7. Will the storyline be as linear as ever? Will it be extra woke? Chances are, it will.

Reminds me of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the feminist propaganda in there. And another guarantee, it will be as optimized as a t8888urd. Reminds me how bad GTAV ran.

    1. “Will it be extra woke?”

Aren’t you the CP77 resident fanboy? Imagine whining about woke games while defending a game where you can choose to play as a transeksual, engage in h0m0 relationships, etc. Would love to know what your definition of “woke” is.

    2. “Will it be extra woke?”

Aren’t you the CP77 resident fanboy? Imagine whining about woke games while defending a game where you can choose to play as a girl with d!ck, engage in h*mo relationships, etc. Would love to know what your definition of “woke” is.

        1. Or maybe i haven’t read your posts at the time, but what’s the point of your “attack” if you go out of your way to buy the game, which is basically an endorsement in itself, and even worse defend their buggy game and waifus with pixie haircuts? You are nothing but a fraud.

          1. So, because I bought the game, enjoyed some of it, had some criticism, makes me… A fraud?

Wow, pretty rich, coming from a communist boot licker.

          2. Pretty much, hollow criticism is hollow, you will probably buy GTA 6 as well despite whatever criticism you throw at them.

          3. Ah, so the criticism is only valid if I didn’t experience the game myself.

That’s very logical. After all, commies are the most logical beings in the universe /s

          4. You don’t need to play a game to know if it have “wokeness”, bugs or any of that sort. And there is a thing called piracy, where you can consume things without having to endorse the propaganda you claim to hate. Poser.

          5. Typical nobody, so, go play it then. You will read that some of the criticism being laid out here are not valid, but fake, and some are.

You think I didn’t criticize the woke parts of the game? Because I did.

          6. Now i’m curious, which criticism is fake? You know most professional critics also don’t pay for the game right?

“You think I didn’t criticize the woke parts of the game? Because I did.”

And? Nobody cares, you bought the game, fraud supporting frauds.

          7. He doesn’t deny dismemberment exist, only that you need a katana to do it, which i guess it’s false. In any case Latex is a low hanging fruit and most criticism focuses on bugs, glitches, wokeness and lack of polish.

          8. Latex doesn’t even know proper english, he was probably talking about the very subpar effects and particles in a 2020 game. I think Crowbcat youtube video is the definitive criticism of the game failure on the technical side, they promised a mix of GTA 5 and Yakuza into one game, they also promised the game to be similar to RDR2, and needless to say they failed to deliver.

          9. The game is far from perfect, buggy as f*k and it has quite a few annoying woke moments, but it certainly does not warrant the hate it got.

          10. When you promise the world and deliver only a house, don’t be surprised if people get p!ssed, even if the gift is still good.
