Assassin’s Creed Valhalla & Watch Dogs Legion in native 4K only on PC, not on next-gen consoles

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion are the first Ubisoft games that will hit both cross-gen and next-gen platforms. Ubisoft has been advertising AC:V as a 4K/60fps and WD:L as a 4K/30fps for next-gen consoles. However, it appears that these two games won’t run in native 4K on these consoles.

According to Beyond3D, Watch Dogs Legion runs with a dynamic resolution on the Xbox Series X. The game can run with a minimum of 1440p, though there are some scenes in which the game can hit native 4K. Or at least that’s what the first resolution analysis shows (from a Watch Dogs Legion Xbox Series X gameplay footage).

Similarly, Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will run in upscaled 4K/60fps on the PS5. Ubisoft’s PR representative told Dualshockers that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla runs at 4K at 60 fps on PS5 (upscaled 4K). Ubisoft has not specified the internal resolution that the game will be using.

Given the similarities between PS5 and Xbox Series X, we can assume that both of these games will run at upscaled 4K on both next-gen consoles. Do also note that we don’t know the graphics settings that these games will be using on next-gen consoles.

What this basically means is that the only platform that can run these games in native 4K is the PC. And, to be honest, this does not really surprise us. As we’ve already reported, Watch Dogs Legion is quite demanding in native 4K. In 4K/Ultra with Ray Tracing Medium, our RTX2080Ti cannot even come hit 30fps. And, to be honest, we don’t mind a re-construction technique that can come close to a native resolution. Just look at how awesome DLSS 2.0 is in most games.

The only reason we are bringing this is because a lot of gamers falsely believe that PS5 and Xbox Series X will run these two games in native 4K. According to early reports, they won’t. So yeah, there isn’t any secret sauce that will allow PS5 and Xbox Series X to magically run these games better than high-end PC GPUs.

  1. I have huge doubts the consoles will hit 60 in any of the ubisoft titles either. Odyssey and the latest Far Cry are very CPU bound.

    1. Their engines are rather garbage. Even the highest end CPUs on PC can’t get a stable 60 fps in some of their titles.

        1. Giant worlds with nothing to do in them. Yay…
Ghost of Tsushima made AC look amateur’s hour. Even BOTW was more impressive than AC’s hollow worlds.

          1. Not at all whilst GOT had some clever mechanics it’s game world was nothing special. BOTW now you are just being stupid that game just had some good physics puzzles. From your comment you clearly haven’t actually played these games just following the hate train.

          2. Sure man. Sure.
Both GOTS and BOTW far out rated any AC game. You’re in the minority somehow thinking AC has something real going for it. It is just running around and killing people, over and over. Nothing more.

          3. lol so are 99% of games.

I’d rather be in a minority than a boring lemming. As for ratings who gives a damn about them but still it says a lot about you that you even mention them.

Go and actually try and play AC Unity and Origins then come back and argue with me about the gameplay and worlds.

          4. You just can’t speak without trying to insult can you?
I actually own every mainline ac game. Beat them all. They’re the most ok series out there.
Unity was the worst of them. Origins I liked for the story but the gameplay was very repetitive.

          5. WTF I didn’t insult you.

You own them all and beat them all but their just ok. I dislike the GTA COD and Battlefield series of games so guess what I don’t keep buying them.

          6. “you are just being stupid” “boring lemmings”, etc. These are insults if you’re not aware.
Yep. They’re not great but they’re enjoyable. They’re a great time killer for winter.

          7. Didn’t know you were so delicate, my apologies I’m from the older generation of males we are far less feminine and yeah (that one was an insult).

          8. Duchebag mode engaged huh?
Insults are a sign of lacking intelligence. It’s all I see when people play that card. It’s a lot level desperate attempt to win a debate.
What age do you think I am?

      1. Yeah if you say that, it’s blasphemy around here. So many Ubisoft KockSuckers acting like this isn’t a known fact that their engines are straight garbage. The only half decent engine they ever created was snowdrop. Anything that uses Anvil is immediate garbage. Like this idiots below us talking about “Stunning & giant worlds”. Man I don’t even respond to people like that. So many high functioning R3tards have flooded DSO it’s not even funny. Show me 1 Ubisoft game that doesn’t make every PC wish it wasn’t made.

We are at a point where people are even praising that garbage AC Unity, can’t even hold a stable frame rate. If your game can’t hold a stable frame rate when you enter one area to the next on Low settings, it’s utter trash. And that is most of Ubisoft games. Even their least problematic Far Cry does that crap.

  2. For being such a huge company… it’s pretty embarrassing how terrible Ubisoft games run. On a side note… hilarious next gen consoles were touting 8k and 120fps and the first games are running at 30fps 1440. LOOL

    1. Its true, their games after origins are pure garbage, even some past games like watchdogs and unity were terrible. And now its even worse, I remember on steam they copy paste unity requirements on to syndicate lol didnt even try

      1. WTF are you on about. Unity is one of the best AC games in the series (not the console versions). Watchdogs is far better than either of it’s sequels.

          1. That was at launch when everyone knows it had issues so don’t be a jerk. I could show similar glitches from pretty much every damn game that get’s released nowadays.

    2. The consoles have 8K output due to HDMI 2.1, nobody has ever suggested that you’ll be playing games at that resolution…
There will be some 1440p 120 fps games on consoles at launch, the ones confirmed are Black Ops and Dirt 5

      1. You can get some games to run ok on an 3090 at that rez… that’s an insane 4x the pixel count over 4k.

That said… i would rather run 4k at high frame rates for an more immersive experience. Or the 1440p super-wide 240hz i run now (approaching 4k in pixel count but higher fov so it’s basically the same load as 4k) – Have to say a surprising many games nowadays support ultrawide and superwide nicely on PC.

  3. One thing that drove me away from the last gen consoles was this: “dynamic resolution”. If you say the console plays in a X resolution and I pay a premium price, I will want to to play in that native resolution. Yet in true is just upscaling. I could too play in 4K using any game with internal rendering in 720p. On PC there is now DLSS but while it lets the image more visible and pleasable still is not native 4K (or 8K). “Look I payed 1200$ on the best of the best to play in 720p upscaled to my 4K monitor. Worth every penny”. Yeah, right. Welp, at least DLSS can be used in a fixed resolution.

  4. This was obvious from the start seeing as an RTX 2080 can’t hit 4k 60hz maxed out. Not sure what those console idiots expect from that hardware given it’s cost.

    1. The 2080 could only play viable 1.5k res at very high/ultra the Odyssey game, let alone the new one which undoubtedly will have higher requirements.

      1. Utter nonsense, I completed the game on my 2080 at 4k 60hz with volumetric clouds to medium and AA set to low everything else on Ultra. Averaged 55 to 60 fps throughout.

          1. I then had Asus Z-170 Deluxe 6700k OC at 4.9 GHz and 32gb ram, 2TB Samsung Evo Pro NVME.

Just upgraded my rig this week with Asus Maximus Hero XII WiFi, Intel Core i9-10850K, 32Gb ram and 2TB NVME, Msi Gaming X Trio RTX 2080 which is even better and I’m getting a mostly locked 60hz.

          2. Had a similar fps on 2080ti with 9900k- Still a trash game from a cpu load perspective, held the gpu back alot

          3. PC rigs are weird my mate has a less powerfull rig than even my old one and Evil Within 2 ran super smooth for him whereas that game runs terribly for me even now. Which is super annoying as it’s one of my favourites.

Yeah my new CPU and MB is really making a difference. it’s funny because in benchmarks the difference is only a few FPS but when gaming it really is making a huge difference and I honestly didn’t think it would.

          4. Can happen but are usually down to some setting.

The avg/high fps aren’t as important as the low’s – Its when the sh*t really hits the fan you want that consistent strong fps – From what your describing its likely in that department you got the biggest upgrade

    2. Never expect a console to match a PC, but I’m not sure who was expecting the consoles to run on ‘max settings’ for the graphics.
Native 4K is possible, it just depends how much the developers throw at it – texture size, draw distance, shadows, RT precision, etc can all be scaled to allow 4K60 if that is their desired target – between resolution, frame rate and image quality, something has to be sacrificed. Sadly Ubisoft always seem to make the sacrifice on the frame rate and/or resolution since screenshots do still sell games 🙁

  5. Yes, lets not also talk about how crappy Ubisoft games are and extremely unoptimized. Let’s not talk about that and use one the worse game engines in the world to set a standard. You’re kidding me right? But as for consoles, i don’t know what idiot believed that hype. But let’s not forget this is UBIsoft.

    1. Far Cry 5, AC origins, Watchdogs,Ghost Recon Wildlands, The Division: name me better looking games with open worlds than any of those games in their genres.

I really don’t get all the hate for Ubisoft yes their games can feel very similar at times etc but graphically you seriously cannot complain.

  6. “Given the similarities between PS5 and Xbox Series X, we can assume (…)”. So you guys are putting information out there based on assumptions? Cmon now…

  7. Well, what do you expect from Ubicrap games? Their in-home engine, Anvil, is utter shyte. I remember playing an AC game way back and it ran like shyte. I went to an isolated island where you won’t see anything but water and measured my FPS. One side I get 60 fps and turning the camera to the other side dips my fps to lower or mid 20 fps. I repeat, that’s on an isolated island where you won’t see anything but water. Can’t remember what AC game that was though. That’s what you get from a company that prioritizes diversity hire rather than talented programmers lol

  8. But.. but… the godtier SSD is the next gen consoles ultimate power. This news is lies…Lies!!!
